Downloads were mentioned several times above, but streaming only once or twice. In this country, even among people with a strong interest in music (including jazz), streaming has virtually replaced both CDs and downloads since more than ten years. It's true that the albums of more obscure artists might come and go, or may never have been available on these platforms. But the availability of millions of albums for a fixed fee has caused "inflation" for digital music. It's just not something that people are prepared to pay that much for (which off course started already with the rise of downloading around the turn of the millenium). It seems as if this has also affected how many people look at the value of these albums/artists/tracks that come and go - it doesn't seem to bother them too much.

Ellington V-disc recording consist of: aircheck, concert, transcription etc. recordings. I like the sunrise is an instrumental version of the take used on the Liberian Suite Lp. For the LP the vocal was dubbed over. Most if not all V-discs were issued on various Classics CD's. Thanks to V-discs we have the never completely recorded Deep South Suite.

I don´t have this, but I love Woody Shaw and saw him live as often as I could. Fantastic musician ! I heard, this album was quite late in his career but that it is great. Maybe I should purchase it.

Yeah, but he didn´t wear the hearing aids much. I remember a Down Beat interview he did in 1988 and the interviewer wrote "his hearing is not well and he apologies on open conversation and since he perspires a lot, the hearing aids get wet and damaged and need replacement. Well, that´s common among musicians. I have the same thing, 48 years of active playing live music and my hearing is slowly disappearing. I play very loud and listen to music very loud and have to concentrate and listen closely if people want to tell me something: Look at the picture of me at an Art Gallery where they want me to present my upcoming album and the famous writer Leo K. who wants to organize it talks to me about the project and tall as I am I bend down and listen with deepest concentration just to HEAR the stuff he tells me 🤣

Are Jazz CDs making a comeback?
paulfromcamden replied to Stonewall15's topic in Miscellaneous Music
CDRs certainly deteriorate. Not through use but the dyes aren't stable over the longterm. -
Lima, Ohio? Maybe Joe Henderson was around?
-
I still think the convenience of CDs and CDrs will enhance their comeback. They have no deterioration or noise like LPs, are portable enabling trading and require much smaller storage space. With a CD recorder any LP can be turned into a CDr and the LP can either be permanently stored or disposed of. One issue is that CDs and CDrs are great for listening to during driving but new cars do not offer players anymore.

What about the matrix numbers? What do they definitely indicate after all? Session discographies usually list the tunes in the matrix number order. But how did producers or session engineers (or whoever specified them for a given session) use and assign these matrix numbers and did all of them always proceed along the same lines?

I see now what you mean. Well: A records are never 100% readable or written down correctly B My stories have got slightly embellished over the years and changed somewhat - dont think I am alone. C May have been the info from the transfer tape changed to the records when mixed

V-Disc Big Band Set Is Coming!!!
Big Beat Steve replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Update to my post above: I am not sure anymore at all that all the Ellington V-Discs were taken from commercial recordings. I just pulled out an LP that has the reissue of V-Disc 610 (In The Shade Of The Old Apple Tree) of November 1945, and the V-Disc discography by Klaus Teubig does not indicate any commercial recordings as its source. Neither for V-Disc 505 that is referenced in the entry for VD 610. According to Bruyninckx, both VD 505 and VD 610 come from Duke Ellington Treasury Shows. And these are only 2 of the Ellington V-Discs. So is it again a matter of balking estates that they're not in that set? -
If they do a "complete" release and they find more takes of these tunes, I'd be interested. However, I do hope that they don't copy the format of the Rollins' Vanguard release, where they cut all of the banter between songs. That was included in the RVG CDs and I really enjoyed hearing Sonny's little talks.

Hi Andy. Not sure what you mean by "this" but ... as far as the Sidewinder session goes, the title track is listed next to last, not the last recorded released take. To the general question, I am looking into how Bill Doggett's Honky Tonk came to be and drummer Shep Shepherd completely contradicts Doggett's story about a sort of immaculate musical conception on a gig in Lima, Ohio, he says it started during a rehearsal and that some time later the band needed to record another song and Doggett asked the band about that "honky tonk type thing you were playing before" and they recorded it and to Shepherd's surprise, it was a sudden, surprise hit a few weeks later. Ruppli shows Honky Tonk Parts 1 and 2 as the first tunes recorded at their June 16, 1956 recording session which contradicts Shepherd's memory.

Great story, and Maimoun would be on my short list of "favorite Cowell tunes".

I think sometimes that as new info comes out then occasionally the session order gets corrected however I thought that this was related to new titles/mix ups since addressed by those present etc....why...what you found that makes you doubt this?
-
Yes. Absolutely.

I have all the discs but would love to be able to secure a box and book for them in this lifetime.
