R.I.P. That comes as quite a surprise. Ken played tenor (and some alto), but mostly clarinet. He will be remembered for the clarinet. His approach was conservative, but he produced a lot of enjoyable music. I particularly enjoy It's a Lonesome Old Town.

Sure! He will be up there with his admired Pee Wee Russell, with whom he shared that way of playing and improvising without safety net (in Whitney Balliett's words) over quite traditional/mainstream material.

When The Cookers played at Church of Sound here in London a few years back we got to the venue (...a church) quite early and found Billy walking around taking it in. I wish I'd said hello and told him how much I love his music but I don't like to bother musicians.

Wow... at least he went out playing. Saw him a few times and I think the last was as part of an Allen Lowe concert in Brooklyn at IBeam (with Ursula Oppens).

Emmet Cohen has posted on Facebook that Ken suffered a heart attack a few hours after leaving the stage after a performance on the last night of The Jazz Cruise. Most of this one: I think I was at this one... I've seen Yoko at Scullers many times so I've forgotten a few of them. I'm pretty sure that some of the music I saw is on this CD but i have been told that there were tape issues on the night I went, so maybe not.

Thanks a lot, Romualdo! Somehow I had missed this note on Discogs, though I did look there, of course. I'll now correct the inlay sheet of CD4 on the basis of this info. Too bad that it would be way over the top to try to buy a copy of "Soho Bop" just for these two tracks.

Just checked my box & disc 4 has 24 tracks. Found more info re the two missing tracks at discogs https://www.discogs.com/release/12524379-Various-Bebop-In-Britain?srsltid=AfmBOor-xf4wFzLyGJcyKk6P5MKEh6KhIcMaFL68-2jq_4pyrsF7owmY baby_interphase Oct 16, 2023 Edited 2 years ago (from Discogs) I recently acquired a copy of this box set and very good it is too [although many of the tracks can be found elsewhere on other compilations] - However, I noticed while listing to Disc 4 'In All Directions' that although 24 tracks are listed here on Discogs and also on the packaging of the release, there are actually only 22 tracks on the CD itself. After some detective work, I found that 'Knock Yourself Out' by the Norman Burns Quintet & 'A Lesson in Bop' by Tito Burns and his Sextet' are completely missing. Fortunately they can both be found on 'Soho Bop' 2CD compilation [discogs.com/release/10272896], the entire contents of which, minus the two aforementioned tracks, appears on this box set.

Great musician. I always enjoyed his playing. RIP

Brilliant musician. I will remember his concerts dearly. Quite a clarinet band in the sky welcomes a new member.

Ted Rosenthal announced Ken’s passing on FB. He will be missed, he had a brilliant career and he was a funny giy.

Ah, too bad. He was great. RIP.

This sucks. Ken will be missed and not just for his playing. I was lucky to see him and talk with him between sets at the old Jocko's Jazz Club in Methuen, MA. He played there solo as well as part of a "Four Brothers" front line. What wonderful memories.
