Chris Hanna started following Coltrane in Finland
-
By the way: I did just receive this Coltrane Finland recording from Lost Recordings. The engineering in the final mix is quite good and with a very high-quality 180 g pressing, so the sound is terrific! I already have the 1961 Helsinki concert via the European tour compilation "So Many Things" (CD) and the 1962 Helsinki concert via the Le Chant Du Monde European tour box set (also CD) EXCEPT THAT "I Want To Talk About You" (from the 1962 show) was never released on any recording -- bootleg or otherwise, based on the John Coltrane Reference -- so this is likely a first-ever issue of that track! This Lost Recordings version has a MUCH higher quality sound than the other versions I have, so I'm glad to have it. What's more, it comes with an access code to get a complimentary download of the entire 2-LP set in lossless .aiff file format -- which is easily converted for digital backup to a burned CD. I took a chance on it, and am very pleasantly surprised at the outcome!

Big Ears adds 8 hours of Indian classical music programming to the Festival in 2026. As I was able to catch only one Indian classical music concert in 2026, this is a banquet for a starving man: Ragamala, which translates to “garland of ragas,” comes to Big Ears Festival as an immersive eight-hour presentation of South Asian classical music, offering a rare opportunity to experience Indian classical ragas as they are traditionally intended—performed at specific times of day rather than within standard concert formats. Conceived as a “festival within a festival,” Ragamala draws from both of India’s great classical traditions: Hindustani music of the North and Carnatic music of the South, each with its own distinctive styles, forms, and instrumentation. The extended format allows artists to explore rarely performed ragas and subtle improvisations seldom heard in conventional evening concerts. Featuring revered masters alongside exceptional younger artists, Ragamala invites listeners—devoted and new alike—into a deep, time-based immersion in one of the world’s oldest living musical traditions, presented with patience, care, and reverence. "Jazz a la Sauter: Eddie Sauter" on Night Lights
JSngry replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Got this one the other day, looking forward to delving into it. I am an admirer of his writing. Sauter-Finegan is sometimes too "clever" for my tastes, but only sometimes. The guy could write. No bullshit or easy popperglow from him! Recommended is the Savoy 2LP set of the late 40s Ray McKinly band. Some real treats there: Not sure, but this one sounds like a sly comment on Kenton of the time... -

That Tatum box is great. My personal favorite album is the quartet with Ben Webster.

Tchangodei is an excellent pianist from Lyon, France. The Wasp is good but the Bow is really, really great. Happy to have that one on LP. Highly recommended stuff. Tchangodeis percussive style fits excellent with Lacy’s playing and of course backed by the excellent Oliver Johnson. Tchangodeis Three for Freedom with Archie Shepp and Mal Waldron is also great.

We'll be re-airing Proving Herself: Melba Liston, First Lady of Trombone in March, but I'm upping it now in honor of her centennial today. -

A new-to-me Lacy album --> I'd never heard of Tchangodei. An interesting contrast to the Waldron duos. There's this one as well -->
