  1. Past hour
  2. Whaaaaat that's awesome! Out of the options to: 1. Mention his name and his playing but ignore his vices. 2. Mention his name, his playing and his vices. 3. Omit his name but mention his playing and his vices. You definitely chose the strangest one!
  3. I also have this, I had bought it after I had heard about Tatum thru Jakey Byard and Don Pullen, the only pianists I knew then. It´s wonderful, maybe then at first listening it was a bit hard for me (bad piano, unusual for me a solo piano no bassist, no drummer no horns), but it HAD something. I remember that version of "Begin the Beguine". Then I didn´t like that tune in general, I associated it with old people, but that intro with a light spanish tinge in it was really sharp, and how he goes into stride in the course of the tune. It´s so great that Woody´s son publishes so many live dates of his father. I don´t have this one , but I have Bremen or so, maybe on other from Elveția, but with another pianist....
  4. Today
  5. You recalled him being an excellent bass player, what was the most important part of the story (to me) ....
  6. Recordings I've enjoyed since shortly after I became alert -
  7. I had a number of communications with Michael in the 90s suggesting a BH Mosaic set - he was keen but had difficulty in choosing a cut-off date so in the end it didn't happen, until now
  8. At first the Trap and then later Little Bills in Iowa City.
  9. Kurt Masur - The Complete Warner Classics Edition, disc 49.
  10. Interesting - Dale Oehler was a school chum in Iowa City while he was playing nightly with JR Monterose. John Wilmeth was the bassist and the drummer was Rusty Jones.
  11. I've always been OK with some of the "lesser" titles like Natural Illusions, Montara, and maybe Knucklebean. Don't know if it's because of Oehler on those last two or if it's just the ex-vibes player in my heart. I do remember playing Natural Illusions on the radio and a guy in the studio telling me I was mispronouncing Bertoncini's name on the air because he had studied with him and he knew ! I probably was.
  12. 20-30 years ago, one afternoon at the Chicago Jazz Festival in Grant Park, Charlie Haden played for an hour exactly as Wilbur Ware would have played. Afterwards I told Charlie he sounded like a true Chicago bassist. Charlie said, "That's the best compliment." Bill Johnson was a powerful bass player on the Johnny Dodds Victors. I wonder what he sounded like in the original (pre-Oliver) Creole Band.
  13. I like Linger Lane just fine. Natural Illusions is probably a bit better than it seems. The sweetening was inartfully done. But the core tracks seem really solid. The one post...whatever Hutch record that carries the full weight of Bobby Hutcherson for me was his Contemporary record. That's one for your Bobby Hutcherson Desert Island. But even at that, I find him, from start to finish, one of the more easily listened-to soloists ever. First heard him on a Gerald Wilson record and ever since, it's just all been fun. Even the lesser records. And his first NYC years...damn near iconic.
  14. Oh yeah, Linger Lane is a keeper - fits in with the Mosaic Select records.
  15. I think Montara is great and I like Natural Illusions more than most people on this forum. Linger Lane - I didn't like much. I'll have to give it another shot.
  16. Saw District 9 again. I'd forgotten quite how violent it is. It actually has an 18A rating in Canada, which is basically an R in the States. In general it holds up pretty well.
  17. A couple of images from an Andrew Hill event at the University of Chicago circa 1968 - taken by Terry Martin. Wilbur Ware, Thurman Barker and Roscoe Mitchell.
  18. I counted that as one of the fluff sessions, along with Natural Illusions and Linger Lane (which I actually sort of like - to me, it's Hutcherson's "CTI" album). Do you like this one? I do OK, though it is his post-accident more subdued playing.
  19. I don't know if he would like being known for what I was talking about in my post. That's why I didn't mention his name.
  20. The new 3-cd set (which I like a lot) caused me to go back and listen to this one.
  21. I went back and forth on how I liked the Select, so I've never picked up the 60s things. Recently, though, I listened to the Select again and liked it, so I'm in on this one. Pre-ordered.
