  1. Sorry for the problems of all involved directly but I am concerned if Ann (my wife) can fly to Buffalo tomorrow. Our daughter-in-law is involved in a difficult pregnancy and asked for her help. Prayers/best wishes are all we can hope for.
  2. Good for her - she's a savvy woman.
  3. My negative impressions of Carter are musical (at least my preferences). My negative impressions of Garrison were formed by his brother-in-law (a friend from the '70s). OTOH, I have witnessed Carter being a complete ass on a couple of instances and Jimmy always seemed "docile". If you enjoy something/someone, go ahead and do not pick scabs.
  4. Cinnamon and sugar, since I will be toast.
  5. Via dna I am a Bears fan. They had no business winning the game today. We need a new offense.
  6. Delightful woman. Met her in 1982 when my friend Michael Frank took me to Pittsburgh to record this album.
  7. Have the LP right in front of me: It's Capitol 5C 052.80 806 1949: I Can't Remember (vcl Tiny Irwin) 1950: Carambola Honeysuckle Rose (vcl Joe Carroll) "Carambola" was/is on the Capitol "The History of Jazz" comp "Vol. 4 - Enter The Cool" (Cap T796) that was around in several iterations/pressings from the original issue of the late 50s at least up to the mid-80s (I bought my copy as a Spanish facsimile reissue in 1983) Correct name for vocalist on I Can't Remember is Tiny Irvin.
  8. The original was green.
  9. It seems it's got something to do with the cost of licensing; the optimum seems to be a 7CD-set, I was told sets with fewer CDs cost more per CD and so do sets with more than 7 CDs. Also, licensing stuff from more than one rights owner for one set seems to be very costly. Another factor making the larger sets more attractive is the cost of the packaging and booklets. Obviously, yes! But still, what's the bottom line between 5000 Pres-sets sold within a few years and 2000 larger sets sold within twice as many years? (Storage room would be another consideration to take into account, I assume? Even if they only print a few hundred at the time, those need to be stored.) They have to print in multiple thousands to be cost effective - they probably print enough for the entire run. The point I was making is a box for 7 cds costs the same as a box for 4 cds and this greatly impacts the per disc cost.

  11. For my taste the Brahms/Tchaikovsky is the best of the 3.
  12. Really sad there seemed to be no recognition of this. It was 44 years ago.
  13. So musicians should aim for "existing musical literacy"?
  14. Well I guess that all depends on what you know.
  15. I think I have most of the stuff on the nessa label. Can't afford much more.
  16. Wonderful set, so underestimated as a chronicle of improvisation at it's best.
  17. I still have the Eftsoons lp in stock and will reissue it on cd (hopefully with more if Mars makes up his mind) next year.
  18. I would like to know which issues folks are missing in their collections. We might be able to help as a group. ? should that last sentence been in the "politics" thread? LOL.
  19. What does humanity gain by being the fastest, fattest, leanest, tallest, etc., and why would anyone cheat to gain an advantage? Seems just to be ego. Worldwide more folks know of Lance than Jonas Salk or a thousand others.
  20. It's an aircheck from one of Duke's Treasury broadcasts. Sonny Burke wrote some songs with Ellington - I wonder if he recorded this at Ellington's request. Anyway, it's interesting, but probably not that rare or valuable - the recording has been issued several times, and is presumably on one of the Storyville Treasury CDs. It looks like it might be an acetate, not a pressed record.
  21. It has always irritated me that the BN tray info says tracks 9-14 are previously unissued. This material came to light on lp in 1983 on the VGM label. I still have my record. Pretty sure they either dubbed from the VGM lp or at least used the same source.
  22. but the small group sides are better.
  23. Track 6 is the one with Jaki on alto. Richard Williams and Booker play on 7.
  24. The horns only play on tracks 3, 4, 7 and 8.
  25. Have not read it but I hope this is taken to be more about Iyer than Hill.
