  1. Thanks.
  2. The "Texas Moaner"/"Cake Walking Babies" dates from 1924/25, with both Bechet and Armstrong, suggest that Bechet was then further along than Armstrong was rhythmically. Agreed.
  3. I am of the opinion that Bechet deserves equal billing with Armstrong for developing/transforming the jazz solo concept. He lost out (pr wise) for a number of reasons but he was a supreme master. I will buy almost anything with his solo on it. The Victors would be first choice to get a feel for his style at a peak. Bechet (from 1923 until his death) was an unrecognized influence.
  4. This is another project I worked on. If I'm lucky I will locate the players and tunes. The concert is by an interesting band. The session Niko lists is correct for the club date, IIRC. The concert band included Dave Burns, Cecil Payne, Benny Powell, Hank Jones, Richard Davis and a drummer I can't recall. tunes are: 1. Theme 2. The World Awakes 3. Minuet In Blues 4. Twas Yesterday 5. Firebug 6. Theme The unedited material times 40:05 for the concert and 45:04 for the broadcast.
  5. Hard to beat salt and pepper. When pressed, I recommend ketchup and mustard. Anything after that is really exotic.
  6. Don't mean to derail anything but Preacher Roe died. He was a hero from my pre-teen years. Back to your normal programming.

  12. How many in this discussion were there at the time? I missed the Vee Jay issues, but heard all the rest in sequence. I do understand the difference between UK and US issues.
  13. i graduated from high school in 1962. I was student council pres and was responsible for the music at the weekly "hops" in the school lunch room. The Bryant version was on local radio and we did the dance. Never danced to another version or other tune.
  14. Chuck, where did you find that great price? From an Amazon "seller" "importcds" for $13.95. I see the offer is gone now

  19. He always seemed to be a great human. We all lose by his passing.
  20. Sorry to hear of your loss. I am still haunted by the ugly death of Maggie because I didn't have the guts to have her "put down". This is a huge life error for me. I sat up two nights with her as she suffered and I live with the memory.
  21. I thought Stash failed because Bernie never paid any publishing royalties.
  22. I can't help but think that a well placed comma toward the end of that title would make it a lot less...uh...creepy/felonious. My nomination for post of the year.
  23. Just want to repeat information (not a quote) attributed to OC: Your can play 'sharp' in tune and you can play 'flat' in tune. Overtones are everything.
  24. Nah! Hodges glanced off more notes than anyone I can think of. This is no "dis" of Coltrane.
