I enrolled during the $4.99 era and received the $6.99 increase email - but it never happened. I have received about 10 discs since the email but all were at the $5.99 price. Received Shepp's Kwanza today.

Another observation about MW (not related to Africa Brass) was his "embarrassment" when humor was used in music. He was a huge fan of tv comedies but was uncomfortable with comic/entertainment tendencies of jazz musicians.

I think I have told this story before. When "At the Five Spot" was issued I spoke with Ben Young (producer) and he said the choice was between it and "In Kansas City". He said "FS" won over "KC" 'cause they thought that name would sell more cds. He said it was a shame 'cause "KC" had lots of extra material to add. He gave no indication if the extras were alternates or new tunes. Interesting Universal thought a bar was more "salesworthy" than a city. Forgot to mention one more insight into the "industry": Both albums were recorded in a NYC studio.

Did you ever get an identification of this Mystery Bassist? His mouth and smile look like Richard Davis to me. I know that Richard played with Hannibal at times during that period. Not Richard Davis.

Nope, I prefer the physical product. I have had the Lacy disc since it was first issued in the early '60s and it is still a favorite. You should follow his career chronologically for more discoveries. Word to the wise - Hard Talk is reissued at good prices on the net. Fine date.

Some prime Hawk (1944) resides on a couple of Cozy Cole Savoy sessions.

Sad news Philippe Gras died following an an aneurysm last week ! He was 64. His site has been withdrawn unfortunately. His photos of Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, the Art Ensemble of Chicago were among the very best. Gras who was one of the nicest and most sincere man in the jazz photo world also had a passion for Asia and published a book of photos on Angkor with a beautiful text by philiosopher Michel Butor. Some of his most celebrated photos are the ones he took for the Actuel/Byg label. Dave Burrell's 'Echo' and Don Cherry's 'Mu, second part' are some examples of the quality of his images. Philippe is sorely being missed! Indeed! Many thanks for the information. Too bad Byg didn't reproduce better copies of the images, but they were/are a treasure.
