  1. I was told she's a "wizard".
  2. Carol Emanuel with her sisters Ruth and Irene all played harp on Wadada Leo Smith's piece "The Burning of Stones". Muted trumpet and 3 harps! We recorded this at RVG's on May 21, 1979. FWIW, Betty Glamman (or Glamann) plays on Ellington's "A Drum Is A Woman" too.
  3. Like the band, have not heard the disc but this is a frequent problem when musicians have control of the "package". A fair number of good artists have sunk themselves 'cause they had "control".
  4. Geez, I forgot to say 100 years. Let me consult Berg, Webern, Carter, Boulez, Cage, Stockhausen, etc. Or maybe more "on point" I should check with (late) Gorecki.
  5. You don't have any idea how hard it is to be "35 years behind the times" and "50 years behind the times" at the same friggin' time. It leads to discomboblulation.
  6. Somebody's on a mission.
  7. Come on, I'm holdin'.
  8. some discussion HERE.
  9. Could it have been Allana Lowe?
  10. Mingus and a woman were dining at the next table in Bradley's one night when I was there. I think Randy Weston was playing. This would be '73/74.
  11. I do wish we had a bunch of folks here to compare the late solo recordings. For example, while I admire the Hines/Ellington stuff "pianistically" but don't think much of the material challenges the best qualities of Hines (not the fault of either, just a happenstance). I much prefer his Arlen, Gershwin, Carmichael, Armstrong, Dallwitz and Hines. I'd love to jump into something like that.
  12. Sorry Lon, I was looking for some stimulating discussion about Earl Hines as a soloist. Didn't mean to bump your cage.
  13. My copy arrived in a 2 lp gatefold - not a sepia single pocket. The cover is not the same as the Fantasy issue but the pic is similar.
  14. I think Smucker's is the sponsor.
  15. I always check out threads Chuck Nessa has entered.
  16. I'm back again and lament the lack of input to Paul's query. Please don't say it's been covered. I would welcome some discussion of this monster's output.
  17. We all need E in our diet.
  18. FWIW, I ordered this set as soon as it was mentioned in Down Beat (1965 I think) and received it promptly. My good friend Ron Ikan saw mine and ordered his own copy, including a long enthusiastic letter with his check. When his copy arrived he was bummed 'cause he got pressings only, no cover.
  19. Geez, I can' stop. Just want to point out the Storyville "Master of Jazz" disc and the Black Lion "One For My Baby" are really both "Plays Harold Arlen" discs and were recorded at the same sessions. Outstanding stuff.
  20. I simply overlooked the Delmark. It is very fine, if more "mellow" than my very favorites.
  21. The Porter recording is currently available from New World Records. There are actually 2 Gershwin programs and both were recorded in the Fall of '73. The other one is currently available on Swaggie. Brownie, the Solo Art set I mentioned contains the 3 Audiophile lps you recommended.
  22. The Swaggies. The Black Lions. The Chiaroscuros. The Solo Art set. Plays Cole Porter on New World. Master of Jazz on Storyville. And, if you can find it, Plays George Gershwin (last available on a Musidisc cd). It is a shame the 3 "Quintessential" lps on Chiaroscuro haven't been reissued.
