Just an "art director" warming up for Verve.

I bought the lp on the day it was issued. I was so taken by Coltrane's solo entry, I could not really get into the 2nd version with the same passion. I think on balance the 2nd version has slightly more interesting solos by the sidemen but Trane on 1 still seals the deal for me.

Lou, if you like Scenes In the City you should check out the "first draft' called A Colloquial Dream. This is on the recent 2 disc edition(s) of Tijuana Moods.

Easier to insert into jacket.

What are the comments about Rivers' playing? Do they also offer any explanation as to why they left off the other two concerts with Rivers in Japan that were recorded by Columbia? To quote Bob Blumenthal: "The Tokyo performance, which may not give a fair sampling of what Rivers brought to the band, was among the last of his tenure" (p.78). - italics are mine. also "Chambers [Miles' biographer, Jack] also suggests that the music was toned down for the Japanese" (76). -Perhaps Miles told Rivers to refrain from playing too "out". I'm not sure why they left the other two concerts off of the set; maybe because they were not "official" releases at the time. Did Columbia record these concerts, and do they "own" them?

Great to have you back Simon. I look forward to reading this after lunch. Good luck with the health issues.

Couple of you will love this - I'm Old Fool Rhino Banga. -
I spent one summer working on a turkey farm. These are stupid, dirty, hateful birds. A couple of examples of the stupidity - when it thunders they run to a shelter and pile on top of one another (dozens suffocate), then when it rains they look up to see what hit them on the head (dozens more drown).

I have little patience with idiots. If this offends any of you.............

If the price is decent (you should have said), buy the sucker. I will not replace my box and my "estate" can sell it. The music is not mis-represented by the mastering.

Sorry I didn't 'splain. "Live from the Pan-African Festival". Jeanne is WONDERFUL on this, as is PJJ.

I've been slowly replacing lps I sold with cd reissues for the last decade. Today I received the current Fuel 2000 reissue of this from Dusty Groove (they currently have some "distressed merchandise") for $9.99. This issue is a 2 disc set - the 2nd disc is "crap" for me, but Blase is DANDY! Healthy Shepp, Lester Bowie, Dave Burrell, Malachi Favors AND Philly Joe Jones. Great stuff. YMMV

Do You Collect Anything ?
Chuck Nessa replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I collect classical recordings as well. Couple of years ago I started an "idiotic post" collection but my wife wants me to burn 'em in the fire pit - probably since so many are mine and she doesn't want the kids to know. -
Shaw thinks Tesch was crap too.

For BN you seem to have been born between Grant's Visions (5/21/71) and Hutcherson's Head On (7/1/71).

Good move. I was about to go ballistic! edit to add the second "l". -
Gee, looks like I ignored "what's his name" with the metal rimmed glasses and the curly locks. Dang.

DeFranco is ok, just never struck me emotionally. Too cold, but a good techie. Pepwhatski is below my radar - choice, not ignorance. Davern irritates the shit out of me. Peter F's statement is insulting. I've heard him for years and we can take a poll about being out of touch. KV, yeah, right. Bill Smith (Brubeck guy, right?) too "scholarly". I another thread someone recommended the Grawe/Braxton Okka recording. Tony plays the shit out of his clarinet on this disc. With a nod to DeFranco and Frank Chace (should he decide to record), most of my favorite living players came out of the AACM and play the instrument as a 2nd or 3rd choice. A special nod to those playing "Albert system" instruments. Those babies just sound better to me. Kalaparusha was at one time (not sure about the last few years) a master of the "Albert" horn.

The early OJC cd is stereo with two exceptions (Off Minor - take 4 and Crepuscule - take 6). The K2 reissue is mono excepting Crepuscule -takes 4 & 5 (a composite).
