Do you lead a double life?
Chuck Nessa replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Not an easy question to answer since you didn't list the rules. Some (many) on this board may whack off and never tell their wife/husband. That probably counts unless you set some parameters. I live in a small "tourist/manufacturing" town and the locals don't have a clue about my job, interests, etc. -
Cable channels: end to bundling?
Chuck Nessa replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
For the last 20 years we've lived in a place with (maybe) 3 channels without cable, a dish or 100 pounds of steel on the roof. We currently get around 40 channels on our "expanded basic" program. I do not need Fox News any more than I need the knitting channel. -
No problem - I pleased to have that cheap set off the market. B) I don't want to leave the impression, from my previous post, I sell regularly sell 20 sets a day. Orders of this size only occur a few times a year.
-
Still available - I have around 250 left, but shipped 20 today.

Never Fear Jazz Is Here! You should here the original.

Right. Steve is such a clown.

Another reason to have an inexpensive system with only one speaker. If single mike recording is good, single speaker must be good too.

Don't ask me for proof, but it has been my understanding (for circa 30 years) this tape was delivered to BN to fulfill Freddie's obligations so he could sign with Atlantic. This being the case, Alfred probably issued it to recoup his investment.

Larry gives Joe more credit than I do.

Anyone looking for the Arnizzle recording Jim has been listening to contact me. I'll sell mine cheap. I think it sucks. B)

Birfland was my favorite club - back in the day.

Looks like a Konitz/Horo night - quartet first (w/Dave Cliff, Peter Ind & Al Levitt), then the 2 lp set with Solal. For some reason Lee's overdubbing on Blues Sketch really bugs me tonight. Very fine date though.

Geez....a friend of my former roomie said a buddy heard them there in May. He says his friend has a tape and says he'll send me a copy. I'll get back to you.

It may well be a dandy book. I don't know 'cause I ain't seen it - I do have to admit the word complete (in the title) is a red flag for me. If it looks good to you, buy it. Please understand my perspective - electrical equipment is dandy, but I am haunted by those for whom this is obsessive. Same for the fanatic record collectors - "I have 92,000 jazz lps and will pay a fortune for the 3 I don't have". But you need to understand that in these instances it is "mostly" people knowing nothing about the reality of their subject. Music first, reproduced decently. I KNOW WHAT GREAT SOUND IS! Professionally, I have worked in both the analogue and digital domain for 38 a total of years. When I work on a project I am dealing with equipment beyond your dreams. When I started the state of the art was the 3 track machine - Ampexes all. My main point is that "collectors, audiophiles" and other experts set standards and rules having nothing to do with reality. AND some of the "lore" is bogus.

Yup, I knew that. Brain fart.

I first bought this in '62 and still play it. I wish it included the Columbia recording of All About Rosie (most of the same players 6 months later). After listened to the Jazz Workshop disc I usually go on a '50s Russell kick and dig out "Rosie" and the Hal McKusicks.

Non bopper who did the best in the realm of Bop?
Chuck Nessa replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Mr Richardson? If he had to go "splat" anywhere, I glad it was in my home state. B) -
It was issued in the Connoisseur series a few years ago. AND the domestic Conn issue had 2 bonus alternates.

Are we talking about corn chips? -
Dang, I thought some really hip poster was on a Von Freeman/John Young trip.......BUT NO............! I don't hear the Coltrane connection. I thought the closest "sound" comparo was with Johnny Griffin. Back in the olden days of the '70s Von loaned me some tapes and acetates from the late'40s/early '50s. He started out on tenor and sounded like a Prez clone. He switched to alto and sounded just like Bird. He then switched back to the tenor and sounds like Von does now. Griffin went through the same sequence and they grew up in the same neighborhood. 20 years later Griffin said he heard a tune from one of my Freeman records on the radio (in his car, in France) and wondered when he recorded "Mr Lucky", only to realise it was Von. Sorry you don't like it Moose. The reason I thought of John Young at first is because I just listened to my Freeman cds to check out the "playability" and sound quality of a repressing. I was struck by the "routines" obvious on a number of tunes. With the exception of the intro to "Serenade In Blue", nothing was set up in advance - everything was directed by Von's hand signals during the recording. We made no 2nd takes.

Can they open and load the new AMG? -
Isn't Dan the guy asking how all these posters could afford all the stuff they post in the "buying" threads?

What numbers did your set(s) get?
Chuck Nessa replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
As someone on the bottom of this game, I might be able to give something that looks like insight. As a "mom and pop" operation, I can control the numbers - the next AE box sold will be #2223. There are a few higher numbers gone since some people ordered their sets based on their address or whatever and I obliged. A company as large as Mosaic probably send around 1000 booklets to the plant and received a packaged product in random order. When they repress, they send numbers 1001- 1300. You takes your chances. -
