  1. Let the buyer beware! ← Not to cast aspersions on the seller's character, but if he is unaware that it was a six-disc set, and it has no box or booklet, I'm willing to bet he is not--shall we say--the actual owner of the property.
  2. The July/August issue of Indie Rock mag Magnet has an oral history of the 80s Minneapolis scene, focusing on the Huskers and the Mats. If the quotes from Grant and Bob are recent, there's still a lot of hostility there. I also must add love for Warehouse--and I'm surprised by the love for Land Speed Record. Even when I was 17 it palled relatively quickly for me. On the contrary, finally hearing the early singles and stuff when Rhino reissued Everything Falls Apart showed they were capable of much more than generic hardcore even at that stage of their development. Allegedly, LSR is only a recording of their first set that night, and the second set had more melodic and/or experimental stuff like "Statues", etc.
  3. The printed catalogue was ideal bathroom reading...
  4. Hi I'm staying in the Washington area on the 17th so I can see my hero Werner Herzog at the AFI Silverdocs festival. Therfore, I have one ticket for sale for the above show: Section DC, Row BB, Seat 109 Carnegie Hall Original Price $60 I would be more than happy to sell this for face value, plus $13.95 for overnight shipping via US Postal Service. I accept PayPal. Thanks!
  5. Chris-- Which ones of the New Orleans and Chicago sessions would you recommend to a neophyte? Which are your personal favorites out of all the OJCs you did?
  6. If that's the one on No More Records, then the Jazz Revord Center in NYC had a used copy available last November. Might be worth a call to see if it's still there.
  7. Ohhhhh sugar. I totally forgot about that gig until a day or two after. I was comforting myself by thinking it wouldn't be a "real" Sam Rivers gig, what with it being something student-related. @##%@%$@#^#$#$@^#$@!!!!!!!!
  8. Err.. Johnny Hodges=Jeep. Not sure if your were kidding or not!
  9. Look at the ABOMINABLE feedback history of the seller. I would stay VERY far away from this.
  10. It's definitely different. I didn't like it, while I've loved almost everythinhg he did before that. I listened to it twice, but put it in a sell pile. On the other side of the coin, you'll have to pry "Godspellized" from my cold, dead hands.
  11. I had tickets to that show, but wussed out because of the snow (I'm 30 miles from DC). I'm glad to hear it still went off okay. Now I wish I'd gone...
  12. I have two tickets for table seating to see Jason Moran and the Bandwagon at the Kennedy Center KC Jazz Club February 24, 2005, first set at 7:30 p.m. I can't go cause my last chance to fly to Prague was that night... Original price was $25 each--I'll take that and swallow the service fees I had to pay. My loss is your gain!!!! Please PM me if interested.
  13. Madre de dios!!!! "I know one label that has 40 reels of Sonny Rollins tapes recorded live in clubs in the Village during the '60s. They (the jazz division) know they're there. And Rollins has told people about them. But they're still sitting there."
  14. Rilke? He was a great jazzer! Oh, wait...

Somewhat off-topic, is the immediate neighborhood of Morton Street where the Arkestra group house is/was, more or less safe (like I won't be caught in an open-air drug market or gang war)? I'm going to Philly in February and would like to make a pilgrimage (well, get some photos at least) of the John Coltrane house and Chez Sony'r Ra.
  16. All I know is that I own that one, and the the store where I got it has re-stocked it, too, thus there must be two that were pressed, at least... ubu Thanks. I may have to wait until the rumored domestic issues come out (I'll believe it when I see them, frankly).
  17. DMG finally was able to send out the discs last week, but I was informed that the Art Ensemble with Fontella Bass was "not yet pressed", although I believe Ubu implied he bought every disc in the series. Anyone know the story? Ubu?
  18. Listening to Kevin O'Neil's solo on "Off Minor" from Braxton's "23 Standards (Quartet) 2003". at the moment I saw this thread. And you bloody well believe it swings!
  19. How's the sound on the box set? IIRC, the box set dates from the late 80s and the CD mastering of that era wasn't so hot. I've contemplated getting it, but I have the Verve Deluxe Editions of "Basin Street" and "Clifford Brown and Max Roach"...
  20. "For Alto" from 1968 is notable as Braxton's very first solo saxophone album, and the first ever(?) full-length solo sax album from any artist. And it was a double LP, to boot! It makes a lot of "Greatest Discs of All Time" type lists, and is genuinely essential. If you like the Art Ensemble of Chicago, "3 Compositions of New Jazz" (also 1968) is a gentle entry into Mr. Braxton's world.
