  1. Nice, Kevin. I saw Mabern with the same group at the Vanguard a few years ago. You're in for a treat. This afternoon I took my little girl to BB King's in Nashville to see Tim Hinkley's organ trio. I am here for a few days and I wanted to see some Nashville pros play jazz. We saw two fun, wide-ranging sets that didn't disappoint. My little girl loves organ jazz and was a hit with the band and wait staff. I don't think they get many toddlers there. I was sad that I couldn't get her to wear her shoes so she could dance on her feet, but I held her and danced when she wasn't rocking out in her seat while eating French fries.
  2. I like the album. I bought it after a Koch trio gig a few years ago. When I asked how much the album was, he replied, "Are you a rich man?" My hearty laugh resulted in the suggested price of $10, but I paid $15.
  3. Wardell Gray - Memorial Album, Vol. 1: It is fascinating to hear Roy Haynes this early in his career (well, at any point in his career). I'll have to revisit his work with Bird and Getz that he recorded within about 6 months of the Gray material and the earlier Pres Aladdin material.
  4. I drove in the day before, but I went specifically for the Haynes show. It was my 5th time driving to New York to see him. Now playing: I picked this up for $2 last week, with the few tracks from the Ellington Mosaic being the only other Webb in my collection. Man, this band swung hard!
  5. Vandermark/Wooley duo and Birth (reunion of a local trio that disbanded and scattered before my time). Starting any second.
  6. The Jimmy Jones session from Disc 5 of the HRS box. I always like Jimmy Jones when I hear him and Budd Johnson was a great choice for the session.
  7. Sidney Bechet Mosaic Select, Disc 3: I bought this set for $20 the other day. After one listen through, this may end up being the disc I return to the most often.
  8. No, I live in the Cleveland area. I've just been fortunate enough to catch Roy Haynes in New York 4 years in a row. If I lived in New Jersey, my wife would be posting 'Missing' flyers outside all of the New York jazz clubs.
  9. I think I picked up Volume 2 on the last trip to Princeton Record Exchange, also for $1.99 and before seeing Roy Haynes. I am beginning to sense a pattern.
  10. I bought this album on Monday before seeing the great Roy Haynes perform in celebration of his 94th birthday. It is pretty surreal to listen to a 1949 recording of him while having seen him perform so brilliantly in 2019.
  11. I have some of his sideman work and particularly like Joe Beck's Journey. Thank you for the music, Mr. Samuels, and rest in peace.
  12. I went into carpe diem mode at Princeton Record Exchange and grabbed several multi-disc sets: The Weston, Pendulum, Bechet and Matthews Mosaic Selects, Coltrane's 1961 Village Vanguard box, Fletcher Henderson's three-disc Columbia box and the two-disc Mulligan/Webster deluxe edition. I passed on several other sets having already exceeded my meager budget, but I also bought several other single discs, which I'll post later.
  13. Thanks for letting us know, Kevin. I've seen him once, with Avery Sharpe's Sojourner Truth Project, and was impressed by his work as a strong soloist and sensitive, unselfish accompanist. He also came across as a nice guy when I talked to him briefly afterward. Here's hoping for a speedy and full recovery.
  14. I have the first album in the series and caught him with Jared Gold, Mike Lee and Byron Landham. Fun stuff.
  15. Amazingly enough, I saw Gary Bartz and Cecil McBee this month and will see Larry Willis next month.
  16. I was foolish not to grab this one before it went out of print, but I did grab a stray Disc 1 from Mosaic. It has Kogun and all but one track from Long Yellow Road. I'll have to keep my eye out for this one. I just listened to the John Hardee portion last night.
  17. As the dope who passed on a partial Larry Young box due to a bout with my budget conscience, I am glad to see Heaven on Earth on this list.
  18. Just finished: Now playing:
  19. I claimed the Curtis Amy set after 15 years of curiosity. Unlike many Selects, it hasn't been released as a download, so I figured $40 was reasonable.
  20. Kent Jordan - Essence: I haven't heard his other albums, but this one is a keeper. 3 of 7 tracks have a rhythm section consisting of Kenny Barron, Dave Holland and Al Foster, with another track having Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette. Billy Childs also appears
  21. Just finished that one. Now listening to: I hear a certain kinship between Redd and Hope.
  22. Rusty Bryant Returns has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of my all-time favorites.
