well, I opened this up with great expectations; though I never liked her musically (her recordings always sounded to me like a dilettante attending rock and roll camp) I have liked some of her prose, tough and personal, and this thing has been praised to the skys. well, it's awful - florid, overly sentimental, banal, boring, trivial, needs editing. I shouldn't be, but I am surprised.

1) I didn't take it out of context; those are two separate points - 2) and whether I do or don't isn't the point - the point is that any attempt to impose cultural-correctness on jazz is coercive in nature; what jazz is should be dictated by the need for expression, not some sociological requirement. That smacks of Stanley Crouch-ism.

Sol Yaged - is he still alive (which may dicate what I can say about him here)? he used to play for Jets games, I think; also, I went to hear Bill Triglia play with him one night at a Dixieland joint somewhere in Manhattan (The Red Garter? Can't remember). Except for Triglia the band was horrible - Bill told me that Yaged used to hire guys who owed him money so he wouldn't have to pay them. At one point Triglia, disgusted, started playing the piano with his shoe.

it's funny this comes up because not too long ago I posted to some thread on Facebook that critics might be more discerning if they had to pay for their cds- the comment was not well received.

glad you mentioned Andrew Ward's book, which is a must-read on the subject (and he also happens to be my brother-in-law).

the Soon-Yi thing was disgusting, but it is possible to evaluate him aside from that - to me he has just made too many bad and pointless films, with a few gems - What's Up Tiger Liillie, Take the Money and Run, Annie Hall, Sleeper, Radio Days, Sweet and Low Down (I think was the name) - and he was never a leading man, though he tried to cast himself, and it became harder and harder to accept him in that role - years ago I played a party for William Styron's 65th or 70th birthday, in Litchfield Connecticut, not long after the whole Farrow/Woody/Soon-Yi thing happened. In the middle of the party Farrow walked in, and I looked at the band (Harold Danko on piano, Jeff Fuller on bass) and said 'let's play Woody 'n You." They declined to do so.

Marc has spoken very highly of Grimes' playing, and I can tell you from personal experience that Ribot is not only a brilliant musician, but acutely sensitive to his musical surroundings. That's significant.
