I used to play that tune with Junior Cook a lot. We also used to play "One Shirt" from "Down With It." Somewhere on a 7" reel I have the Blue/Junior Quintet live at Mintons with Chick Corea, Gene Taylor and Al Foster. Cookin'.

Post your recommendations, raves, discoveries, tasting notes, critiques, pans, expertise and ignorance here. To start things off: NYC Store recommendation: Chambers Street Wines. Co-owner David Lillie is highly regarded for his expertise particularly in wines of the Loire Valley. He is also a former bari player (Widespread Depression Jazz Orchestra). CSW has probably the best and most discriminating selection of bottles under $15 in NYC. Large selection of Rhone, Loire, Bourgogne, Beaujolais, Languedoc Roussillon as well as Italian. Many organic/biodynamic. Hurry before it's all gone! Sherry Lehman is selling the 2001 Chateau Bourgneuf for only $19.95!!! Do you remember the last time you could buy a Pomerol for $20?

Which Coltrane are you enjoying right now?

Half Note. My Favorite Things. McCoy's solo Devastating. -
We're playing in Slide Hampton's big band tribute to Jobim. June 4 at Tribeca Performing Arts Center

Hugh Walker sounds nice on the live KD with Sonny Red and Cedar from the Half Note, February 25, 1966.

When I was a freshman in college, I was curious and crazy enough to transcribe Trane on Venus, beginning to end. (Gee, it just doesn't sound the same on piano - oh well.) His rapid fire harmonic movement isn't really that different from what he was doing in 1965, but his tone seems to have changed a lot. Makes you wonder where he would have gone from here.

Half Note broadcasts. Can't get enough. McCoy on My Favorite Things, Song of Praise and Afro Blue is for me some of the best McCoy on record period. It's all there. This music is also a great exercise-workout motivator. Really helps me get through my routine. -
Blue Mitchell and Harold Vick. Nice soulful front line. Have had an original pressing of this since college when I used to play the title track with a quintet I had with Pookie Johnson and Al Kiger.

Following is my post at AAJ in response to this bullshit rumor: Originally Posted by the magnificent goldberg "Johnny Griffin is 78 today. He is not in Paris. He is home. He returned today from a concert in Antwerp. Originally Posted by the magnificent goldberg "Fortunately, although he retired from playing some time back" Another untruth. Griff is not retired. He performs around once a month.

Ugh... I've found illustrated instructions online which more or less match the above posts. Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing left to do but get my hands in there...

Mine are Snells from 1988. I bought a foam surround replacement kit online for $19 figuring that's all I have to lose if I screw it up since the original surrounds are disintegrated anyway. If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to buy new drivers from Snell.

This is probably what you're referring to: From David H. Rosenthal 'Hard Bop' Oxford University Press 1992. Quote from McLean: "The first record I made was not with Miles. I made a rhythm-and-blues piece with Charlie Singleton's band called 'Camel Walkin' where I played baritone sax, no solo." If Bird had been taking part in the session, I am sure McLean would have mentioned this! Jackie gleefully played me this track at his house a few years ago. Never mentioned anything about Bird playing on it.

What an international group of well-wishers! Israel, Switzerland, Germany, France, UK, Holland, Texas and Indiana (the last two really should secede, c'est bon? I've lived in both places long enough to be able to say that without catching too much flak). Thanks a lot. -
Without giving an opinion about what he was doing there with Christina A, and which one is playing up or down to who, from purely a musician's point of view, you gotta admit, if you could hear him, through Christina's wailing, Herbie WAS playing his ass off. I know it's hard, but you have to be willing to tune out all the bullshit, listen close and zero in on what Herbie was actually playing.

Jerry Haynes = Mr. Peppermint, beloved Dallas area TV kiddie show host Don't forget Mr. Greenjeans. And while on the topic of Dallas kiddy-TV nostalgia, how about Icky Twerp? Had nice times working with Marchel and Fathead over the years.... -

Sometime around 1980 Sadik Hakim played me an open-reel tape of Dennard playing solo at a house party. I don't remember the date, but presumably by the sound perhaps from the early fifties. I first met Idrees Sulieman at Sadik's apartment around the same time and believe the tape came from him. Jamil Nasser also has it and played it on WKCR some years ago. The tape has two tunes - Boplicity and Round Midnight. I remember Boplicity as played very smoothly in block chords perhaps in emulation of the Birth of the Cool band. He had a beautiful sound. I'm dying to hear this tape again. Jamil had some kind of conspiracy theory about Dennard's death that I never understood. Something about their tour in Tangiers and the CIA?? I asked Joe Wilder a few days ago about Oscar Dennard and the name didn't ring a bell.
