  1. i've heard this set, but haven't been completely convinced that i need so many discs of doldinger. i'm not completely sold on his tone. it sounds somewhat derivative to me... are you digging it? is the material varied enough to warrant its size? -e-
  2. ub, it's not corny at all... -e-
  3. so far as i can tell, same material, different sequencing. BUT, the japanese set is 18 discs vs. 16 in the domestic set. without a detailed dissection, i see nearly identical material but with certain omissions, however, nothing i haven't seen before... domestic u.s. edition japan edition regards, -e-
  4. i've had this for about a year now (the shops in france were really behind it) and felt the very same way you did initially. however, i found with repeated listenings it grows quite nicely, so stick with it. garbarek dominates the sides he's on, that's for sure. manu is a nice addition to the ecm fold, imho... regards, -e-
  5. yes, i have it and the singers unlimited set as well... european blue note indeed. long live MPS! regards, -e- ps: as a nootnote, i've been to the village of villangen three times now (it's one village south of where i have a second home), ane each time i promise myself i'll find the old studio. finally, the dvd has given me a sufficient visual-rules map i can follow when i am there in november.
  6. lee morgan - the proconstipated
  7. when the disc is inserted and the menu arrives, your first choice is german or english. every word of german is well subtitled. the dvd is a labor of love that a production team spent some time on. it also comes with a tricky little package of about 8 or 10 postcards of different MPS moments. 80 euros for the book (the original hardback?), the dvd, and a t is a steal in my opinion. i'm quite sure i paid over that for the book alone... -e-
  8. art blakey + the jazz messengers: a night in amnesia bobby hutcherson + harold land: sam clam's disco stanley turrentine: never get me low wayne shorter: ad infinitum (get it?) lee morgan: the stumproller dexter gordon: dexter calling...collect paul chambers sextet: whiffs of chambers and finally... hank mobley: a fatty for daddy , -e- ps: edit: so 'harold' doesn't have a 'q'...?
  9. i own the dvd and it is HAPPENING! it's packed with fantastic arcana and interviews that anyone interested in MPS would love. HIGHLY recommended, -e- ps: naturally, the book is everything claude mentions. barely equaled in terms of sheer aesthetic quality.
  10. amazon.de seems to be the loss leader at the moment... -e- ps: ubu, PM me and i can get you some of this music if you like. i have a 2-disc van damme set which this new release makes redundant for me.
  11. mine is already waiting for at my 2nd home in the schwarzwald... i'm hoping original coverart is reproduced in what will surely be a great accompanying booklet. van damme rules! -e- ps: now if i can just get clarke-boland's "music for the small hours", i'll be happy.
  12. fantastic recommendation. thanks! -e- ps: most affordable @ amazon.de...
  13. about to pick it up. i really like frisell. his work has grown on me quite nicely over the years. he used to come into the store i worked in and we'd discuss jazz for long periods of time. once i laid a copy of stan getz 'focus' on him and it blew his mind. frisell is good people and, to me, it shows in his work. -e-
  14. wow. not to focus on the negative, but i couldn't disagree more with you if i tried. i have a collection full of ECM titles whose material has only grown in richness over the years. it all depends on your tastes, which is why you added "IMO"... however, on the other hand, if i listen to an prototypical ECM date when i'm not in the mood, it can have what might be the same effect. -e-
  15. clementine's thumbnail review has me salavating. all comments on this sets remastering welcome, por favor! -e-
  16. PM on garland... -e- PS: PM acting wonky. hopefully you received it (and not like six of them). lemmie know if we're experiencing technical difficulties...
  17. finally - someone! this date is worshipped in europe and asia... then there's this modal a-la-miles-second-quintet-era gem: , -e- ps: this is the recording *directly* preceding the beloved "hi-nology" date.
  18. are you guys hip to this record? hideo shiraki quintet & 3 koto girls: sakura sakura. a '65 session with terumasa. very fun stuff, imho... -e-
  19. can i interrupt this wonderful thread to inquire as to the merits of pearson's "hush"? it's a side i've been after for some time that i'm closing in on a la "prairie dog". btw, i will be in stokholm in november. a guide to the stores would be a godsend. -e-
  20. would you mind titling your header "F/A" or "for auction" next time? -e-
  21. i'm going to weigh in a late-to-the-party response here with my vote for 'monk in tokyo'. there's a sparse and hard swing to this record, with rouse right out front, that earns it a place in my top 2 or 3 monk records. plus, imho, it's well recorded. not to be missed, -e-
  22. anyone else see the wonderful piece on darondo a couple of issues back in wax poetics? -e-
  23. but they won't. so a subdivision or seperate header under the category titled "for auction" will solve the problem... -e-
  24. that was my original question... -e-
  25. ...nor dodgy mastering. , -e-
