What's the going price on a Nat King Cole Mosaic (CD)?
Ron S replied to David Ayers's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
And how much to not look at you? (ba-dump-bump) -
I'm not sure how much better those can get! Every time I listen to those, I'm amazed at how fabulous they sound.
-
That's OK, Lon--I've already asked Kirk the question you wanted answered. He said that yes, absolutely, your stereo system is better than any other he's ever heard.

You should give this one a chance. IMHO, Joe did a great job improving on the 20-bit K2 remastering of the Bill Evans Vanguard recordings, as I discussed here.

Just resuscitating this thread to share some information I just obtained about this set, in answer to a question that came up when the set first came out last year. I just spoke with Joe Tarantino, who is credited with the 2005 set's remastering, and he confirmed that this is, in fact, a new remastering, and not the 20-bit K2 remastering of the earlier Japanese box. I had suspected this after A-B'ing the new set with the 20-bit K2 versions of "Sunday At The Village Vanguard" and "Waltz For Debby". While there is much less tape hiss in the new set, the instruments have a more natural sound and greater presence than on the 20-bit K2s. Joe indicated that he thinks the remastering on the new set turned out very well, and I quite agree.

Someone is about to answer this question authoritatively, so listen up. I just got off the phone with Joe Tarantino, who remastered this new set for Fantasy/Concord (and he is credited for this on the label). He confirmed that this is, indeed, a new remastering, and NOT the Japanese 20-bit K2, and that this one was done in 24-bit. By the way, I also asked him about the new Bill Evans Vanguard box, which also credits him with remastering, and he confirmed that it, too, is a new remastering, and NOT the 20-bit-K2 remastered box previously issued in Japan. I've called Joe in the past with questions, and he has always been very helpful. I'm glad to see that even with the Concord acquisition, he's still there.

Before or after the cd of Styx tunes? Don't worry, Chuck. That one will see the light of day soon, with full credits to you as producer and "conceptualizer". But who's the "decider"?

organissimo at the Syracuse Jazz Festival
Ron S replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
If your Philly schedule allows. -
Dude, the thread title is "Philadelphia concerts," not "Corpus Christi concerts." LOL - A "Corpus Christi concert" thread would be EXTREMELY short. That's why I troll the Austin/Dallas concert thread Actually, I have to drive to Austin for any jazz fixes anyway. Maybe I need to start coming up to Philly for your shows, y'all have some good ones! Come on up, Erik!

jazzmatazz
Ron S replied to danasgoodstuff's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I talked to Alan a couple of months ago, and he told me the same thing--he's been very busy and hasn't been able to check in here. I have been getting his weekly Jazzmatazz emails--at least the Philly jazz concert ones. Based on our conversation 2 months ago, he's doing fine, but is just real busy. -
for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics
Ron S replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeah, managed that bit but the payment page was different from last time. I'll check again later. Cheers John. That's because of what Aggie explained. Don't worry--John will take REAL good care of your money. -
January 19th???? Hope it doesn't snow... I said NO EXCUSES. Especially for those who live in CENTER CITY.
-
Mark your calendars, guys: I've just confimed a date for a band called organissimo (ever heard of them?) at Art After Five (at the Art Museum) for January 19, 2007. Plenty of notice, so NO EXCUSES!!! I'm still working on lining up a Philly date or two in October, so stay tuned.

He was also a lawyer, iirc. (Gotta take the good press when we can. )

Well, for one thing, I don't think Art Garfunkel was ever a regular on "It's About Time". Then again, I haven't had a chance to sit down and watch every episode in sequence for quite some time, so I might be mistaken. Fortunately, I do get to listen on a regular basis to the theme song.

Your biggest (gasp) Mosiac order?
Ron S replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Then you're going to miss Moaic's announcement next month of "The Complete Wynton Marsalis Sessions: Any Label, Any Time, Anywhere," with a special reduced price for those who preorder by the end of August. -

Hey, c'mon...he was elderly by then and probably ill as well. When I saw him in Cambridge, MA in the 1980's he was fantastic. And in his prime he was even better. Same experience here--a fantastic quartet with Odean Pope, Cecil Bridgewater and Tyrone Brown--an hour long version of Scott Free was devastating. I saw him in Philly in the early '90's, and he was still going strong.

I'm leaning heavily, too--but only 'cause I need to drop a few pounds.

TWO DISCS!!!!! I'm ordering 4 copies. We're having a small get together next weekend and I need some new coasters. What time should I be there?
