Ron, I'm sure that Oliver was referring to British Columbia, which has been for decades an EMI label. As I recall The Yardbirds recordings were on them. In Britain, the US Columbia recordings were issued on the CBS label. I assumed when he said "Columbia Jazz" he meant the Columbia that put out, well, JAZZ. And weren't all those Kenton recordings now issued by Blue Note originally on Capitol, and not Columbia?

Columbia is part of Sony/BMG, not EMI. But give it time--they'll all eventually be part of one Sony/BMG/EMI/Universal megaconglomerate.

Bargains on Basie Mosaic, Black Saint/Soul Note and classical
Ron S replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's still a bit cheaper (in US dollars) at Zweitausendeins, and even cheaper yet through several Amazon Marketplace sellers (e.g., Caiman). -
Also, the 6/25/62 Tsubo/Berkeley session is the one identified on "Full House" CD itself. The terrific 3/27/65 Paris concert can currently be found in this 2-disc Definitve set: Both "Full House" and "Complete Live in Paris 1965" are highly recommended, and present live Wes at his best.

Mozart Complete Piano Concertos: Gardiner/Bilson
Ron S replied to Guy Berger's topic in Classical Discussion
Mike, I've just looked all over the internet for that Beethoven box and can't find it anywhere. Is it still in print? -
But don't these always come in threes? So Dick should be safe at least until the next batch.

Mozart Complete Piano Concertos: Gardiner/Bilson
Ron S replied to Guy Berger's topic in Classical Discussion
For some nice Mozart on fortepiano that's not overpowered by an orchestra, I strongly recommend these 2 discs of piano trios by the Mozartean Players, an original instrument (including fortepiano) trio from NY, IIRC: These are on the Classical Express label of Harmonia Mundi, and are available from Amazon for only $6.98 each. Very well recorded fortepiano. -
As long as you invest the rest of it--I'm gonna be lookin' to borrow some cash from you in about 15 years.
-
For one thing, invest it. After 15 years in a mutual fund with an average annual return of 10%, a $255,100 investment would be worth more than $1 million. How much will that shitty old beat-up guitar be worth?

for those who missed out the cheap Universal Mosaics
Ron S replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
They're both out of stock right now, but if you bookmark the order page I posted above, and insert their current stock numbers (502089 for the Eldridge and 502195 for the Pepper) on a daily basis, you should more accurately catch them when they're in stock. -

You may just push me into ordering this Bad Boy when it goes into "running low" status. -
Randy Weston Mosaic Select running low?
Ron S replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sorry, just a dumb joke that came to me while reading the Melba Liston references in this thread and knowing the popularity of Weston's collaborations with her (I tried to indicate that it was in jest by saying it was because of a mix-up and italicizing "Sonny"). The first-round KO reference alludes to Sonny Liston's second match with Ali, which ended thusly. I guess the humor was a bit too dry for a Sunday morning. -
Randy Weston Mosaic Select running low?
Ron S replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
If you do, be sure to ask him if there's any truth to the rumor that, because of a mix-up, he once had a "session" with Sonny Liston: I've heard that Randy KO'd him in the first round. -

Can I make a suggestion that won't require any additonal fruitcake investment? Just bookmark this page and, once or twice a day, go to it and fill in the number 1 under "Stuck", the number 502087 (their new stock number for the Basie Mosaic) under "Nr.", and then hit the "aktualisieren" (update) button (sorry for being so pedantic if you speak German ). It seems that when they have fewer than 3 sets of a title in stock, it will not show up on a search of the artist's name, but can still be purchased this way (this is how I bought the Eldridge Mosaic from them a few weeks ago). Of course, if the set really is out of stock, you'll get that message when you hit the update button. But this way, you're more likely to catch the Basie set the next time they have it in stock (which I'm confident they will) than you would be relying on the fruitcake cravings of our European friends. -
It wasn't you--it was the 40-year-old booze and those crazy Russian guys. Wait a sec--are you sure it wasn't really a bottle of Stoli?

Bet you didn't know that his son really IS in the music business. He's Music Director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Click here since you probably won't take my word for it.

As I recall, Doug Stravinsky, Ricky Rachmaninoff, Pete Prokofiev (yeah, it's named after him), and Stan "Shemp" Shostakovich had an oldies band for a while, trying to trade on the fame of their better-known brothers (sort of a Dino, Desi, and Billy kinda thing). But they broke up soon after being booked on a concert tour of the Gulag Archipelago.
-
Then in your case, that's more like FIFTY-year-old shit.

Looks like Sangrey's been into some 40-year-old shit of his own.

Speaking of which, I noticed that the OTHER team is called "Great Britain" and not "United Kingdom"--what's up with that? Does Ulster have its own team or something? I hadn't spotted that at all! Beats me Well, do some research and report back to us!

You weren't looking hard enough. The nice thing about yourmusic is the consistency--$5.99 per disc, whether it be a single disc or a 16-disc box set, all the time, with free shipping. No secret codes to know, no special sales to keep track of, no mental gymnastics required. Just a good, dependable, solid price all the time. It's boring, but it works.

Uh, not to spoil your party, but . . . . . . this is the same deal you get 24/7/365 at yourmusic.com, with NO minimum order. But this ISN'T yourmusic.com.......it's BMG. BTW, do they have those albums? Sure do.
