Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Roy Eldridge, discs 1 and 2: -
The audio of the real Belgian TV performances--and others from that tour--are also now available on this Gambit CD: As you can tell from the clip Jim found on youtube.com, the sound is pretty good. Now, if you want an audio recording of the video that started this thread, you have to get the hard-to-find CD "Wes Montgomery Plays Free Jazz," which was issued for a very brief time only in Albania.

Duke - "Cote d'Azur Concerts" 8 cd set
Ron S replied to Dmitry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Her half-sister with whom she had been very close, I believe. Also, I don't remember comments about her performances being negatively affected, but rather about her professionalism in giving good performances under difficult personal circumstances. I've never seen any criticism of Ella's performances on these dates--only of the Ellington band's (along the lines seen in this thread). -
You must be aware of what's going on with the Barnes Foundation trust right now. BTW, I have a semi-humorous story about the exhibition you saw twice. When I was in Paris on my honeymoon in September '93, my wife and I walked to the Musee D'Orsay, looking forward to seeing its wonderful collection. When we got to within a couple blocks of it, we encountered a long line of people coming from the direction of the museum. We continued walking to the museum and, sure enough, the line led all the way to it. It turned out that this blocks-long line of people was waiting to get in to see the Barnes exhibit, which was there at the time, and we were unable to get into the museum at all. It was quite ironic, of course, since that collection is based in our hometown. If I recall correctly, I believe that exhibit broke all attendance records for the Musee D'Orsay, and perhaps for any travelling exhibit in Paris up to that time.

Also available is this 2-CD Verve set (which is what I have) drawn from the same material, if you don't want to spring for 8 CDs of it: -
More Savoy stuff suddenly showing up--wonder what's up with that?
-
Speaking of the Stones, someone's already put this up, in case you didn't catch them at the Super Bowl last night. EDIT: And here is the full half-time show with French commentary!

It's on my radar (awaiting a windfall..) ( . . . or "Running Low" status.) -
And if SS1 had a webcam, the rest of you would have seen something like this:

Not at all. I was enjoying the chat about art museums etc. I had a buddy over and couldn't hang at that time. Wait--you have friends in real life? You mean that's actually possible?

Paul (Conn) conveniently fails to mention that he stopped in earlier last night when Hans (J.A.W.), Flurin (King Ubu), John (couw), and I were in there, proceeded to make some lame excuse about having to leave and come back later, and then booked. I think he just wanted to wait until the COOL kids showed up.

I just got an email notification that this item shipped on 2 February. Now I'm curious to see if this "new" copy shows up. My order from Zweitausendeins went smoother--and quicker--than this, and I don't even speak the language!

Next up for me:

Help me pick more Mosaic sets for my order

Well, if you want to continue with the JJ theme, there are the 2 "Eminent" volumes--excellent music and phenomenal "side" men, including Clifford Brown, Hank Mobley, the Heath brothers, John Lewis, Wynton Kelly, Horace Silver, Paul Chambers, Charles Mingus, and Kenny Clarke. Also from the same era as the JJ set, there are the 2 great live Art Blakey dates (each consisting of 2 separate volumes), "A Night At Birdland" and "At the Cafe Bohemia". There are plenty of other suggestions, and I'm sure you'll hear them here, but these Blakey titles and the Eminent JJ volumes are cornerstones of '50's Hard Bop, and you should get them soon if you don't already have them. -
I'll take 'em! Something tells me that Hans' 300 "worst" would be better than any of my "best". Yes, well, the thing we forgot to mention is that I slipped him an extra $10 to place a nice 'aromatic' Dutch wedge in your box! Nice! A BONUS--and one I can EAT!

I think you just have a cardboard fetish.

Listen, Dude, when you have only 7 jazz CDs to your name, you have to keep them well-hidden. Actually, I'm just a lazy MF (now you guys have ME usein' it). Hey, I DID join in the Stanley and Shirley Love Fest last night. And I STILL wanna know if Major Holley ever made it to Colonel.

You're obviously a linear thinker.

Which reminds me: you owe me a beer.

Use some deoderant before coming in next time, and maybe I will.

But Dude, you don't have THIS looking all nice and pretty up on your shelf:

What are the four bonus tracks? 4 tracks recorded in Paris in 1958 by the "JATP All-Stars," which were used in a French film soundtrack. Roy Eldridge and Stan Getz appear on the first of these, Coleman Hawkins on the second, Roy Eldridge on the third, and Dizzy Gillespie on the fourth. You can read about this release here.

I picked up a used copy of the US Release from an Amazon Marketplace seller not too long ago. I was very lucky--clean, mint copy that looked like it had been unwrapped but never played nor handled. I just checked though (as I'm sure you have), and there are currently NONE available. This is the kind of record label nonsense I just don't understand: This title is widely regarded as one of the best of its type from that era, and certainly as Ellis' masterpiece (AMG gives it 5 stars AND its check mark). And it's clearly in demand--NO used copies currently available through Amazon or Ebay. Yet Verve lets it go OOP (although it is available on iTunes, apparently).

You owe me 3 cents.
