  1. In the 70's, I used to drive home after my overnight radio show on a Central Expressway in Dallas that was much less traveled than it is now. Driving a Lincoln Mark IV, often at speeds above 100 until I got near a local Drive-In theatre just off the road where cops used to hide behind the movie screen. Foolish youth... ...but maybe the youth is still there 'cause I do a nice round 200kph (ca. 125mph) on the Autobahn everytime I'm there. The first time tho - I very foolishly took out my digital camera to snap a photo of the speedometer! No problem with fast drivers - it's reckless driving that I hate and is the most dangerous. Gimme people doing 200kph+ on the Autobahn over US drivers at 75+ mph careening and wildly passing with no turn signals, etc any day! An amazing system they have there - tho friends tell me that it was much better years ago.
  2. A rather bizarre collection of tributes here. It begins with a 21 year old college student who's become obsessed with her...
  3. Is this the Steam they were talking about: or this one:
  4. Hmmm. I've got one too. Can you disable pop-ups in your browser? I remember Safari having that ability. I'm using Firefox which I've got all set to disable those, so they just never makes it to my desktop. If it's doing something weird, I usually don't notice.
  5. Wow, between that and your previous comment, your system must be wide open. Sorry, if anyone else has this prob. It doesn't happen here on this machine otherwise I wouldn't have recommended it.
  6. My 2 cents is that the recording - Streaming is anything but boring. The interplay is astounding - especially with what could've happened which is the overuse of electronics, but in this trio setting, George Lewis does an excellent job listening - they all do really. You wanna hear any of it, just drop me a line and I'll rodcast it to you.
  7. I found this site: http://www.free-covers.com/ I haven't spent a lot of time with it, but it seems to do a pretty good job of providing covers at various sizes. It's supposed to work for DVD covers as well. It does mention "back covers", but so far, I've found it to only show song titles. There's a "tracks" link as well, but it's spotty. Anyway, a backup alternative of sorts... a quick check on the On The Corner title shows it at 475X475, and the complete session at 455X455...
  8. It's not an add-on - just a search engine for cover art. It seems to mean well, but when you put in Zappa's Hot Rats, for instance, it states that it's not available(?) So, it has it's limitations even for well-known items. It's alternative - which is going thru the iTunes store - is a bit cumbersome - especially if you don't even have the store readily available to you. Anyway, it's another consideration, but I'll probably stick with a Google-search-album-art script for now.
  9. Excellent! Sid was not the original bass player as the article states...
  10. How happy she must be that this is how she will forever be known! Well, I think that depends...

  13. We met at the very first Dallas Video Festival 20 years ago. I usually don't go to these kinds of things, but I had composed the soundtrack to a film that was premiering that evening. The filmmaker introduced us. Later, we discovered that even tho we had the same friends in college, we had never met each other. For example, we both saw the Sex Pistols at the same venue in January '78, but, again, didn't know each other. R~~

  15. I'd definitely start with #4 first. Ethio Jazz.... It's the one with the most jazz leanings with a CrAzY instrumental sound to boot! You may go for #8: Swinging Addis as well. For a single vocalist, I'd say the great Mahmoud Ahmed. Number 7: "Ere Mela Mela" was my introduction to him back in the late 70's. It's a recording by a popular controversial singer (because of his politics) that keeps reappearing thru re-releases every decade or so. Fine, very strong singer! The recordings that feature Tlahoun Gessesse are also good on the vocal side. If you ever want to explore the more raw, folk-ethnic type of sound, the Alemu Aga - #11 - is an absolutely spellbinding playing of the béguéna which is a small harp played with a low buzzing sound while Aga sings in whispered tones. I think that most of these titles can be listened to thru Amazon's recent addition of it's own listening sampler. The producer, Francis Falceto, and I crossed paths back in '86 before he started this series and he is completely devoted to this music in extraordinary ways. The hunt for those few and far between singles that were made during wartime in truly "underground" fashion was a major driving force for him in getting the early part of the series out to the general public. I've been pushing for him to put out a disc of the great keyboardists of that era. I'm especially fond of that real organ sound (not the synthesized sound that was later to be used) that was nearly always played in that special legato manner that really gave this music of that era a very special soul - think Alice Coltrane. two samples from #8: Alèmayèhu Eshèté Samuel Bèlay
  16. Got 'em all and plan to play them - tonight, a favorite Ethiopian restaurant is in the plans! (Man, I wish I were at Frankfurt's Lalibela restaurant!)

  19. Marcel, You have a lovely city there in Münster!!! (folks, they have a library there that looks like a spaceship - )
  20. very small...but I've been known to replace copies that are really worn and still keep the first copy - usually because of a signature or some other personal connection.
  21. Do you have any bananas in you?
  22. There's no such thing as "(re)arrange the bookshelves" around this place. They, like the music, are random.
  23. This must've been played over 20 times during the 'NYC special. Thanks!
