  1. Am now listening to David Brent Johnson's Night Lights Bee Hive episode. The music still doesn't convince me. Judging by what I've heard so far I can imagine that it can be fatiguing in large doses.
  2. Had it but sold it, too much stuff I didn't care for or didn't like.
  3. Of the five audio samples on the Mosaic site the Curtis Fuller was the only one I did more or less like; the Ronnie Mathews seemed OK, but I found the Nick Brignola and Sal Salvador absolutely horrid. The Junior Mance didn't do anything for me. I know the Johnny Hartman date (not among the samples) is revered, but I'm not into his kind of vocals. Arnett Cobb (met him in the 1970s, a nice man) is not one of my favourites. The other stuff seems a mixed bag to me.
  4. Thanks. I wasn't familiar with any of the dates (due to personal circumstances I wasn't listening to jazz at the time), but I see what you mean, having listened to the audio samples on the Mosaic site several times; I kept wondering why they never really convinced me, though quite a few people whose opinions I respect were and are pretty positive.
  5. Came late to this old thread and haven't read all of it, and now that the link above is dead it would be interesting to hear - in a nutshell - what exactly your reservations about the Bee Hive dates are.
  6. I don't think anyone said that, at least I didn't. I was referring to the general negativity on this board as I perceive it. It's been around for a long time and it's one of the reasons I left. Mosaic's problems were the only reason I returned, but, as I said earlier after I had made the mistake of removing an entire thread, I probably shouldn't have. Oh well...
  7. I don't deny that this set is a historical jazz document and I don't deny its importance either, and I do occasionally buy sets just for those reasons if the music interests me in any way, but in this case the music doesn't quite do it for me and that's an important factor, the more so since my funds are far from unlimited. The fact that some of the recordings sound a bit quirky is less important, the ears do adjust to that after a while if the music does interest me enough.
  8. I know all that, but Strata-East was not a label I was very interested in and I skipped most of the stuff back in the day, with the exception of Glass Bead Games, which I found interesting but nothing more. After all these years I decided to give it another try and listened to the audio samples on AllMusic a few times, but, as I said earlier, I'm still not convinced by much of the music. For instance, Pharoah Sanders always sounded like a hoover to me in the 1960s, during his impulse! years, and the Strata-East doesn't do much to improve that impression, and that's just one example.
  9. Thanks, but I listened to the audio samples of all the tracks on AllMusic and I'm still not convinced - some good music, and some that's not really my cup of tea. The negativity on this board never ceases to amaze me. Seems like some people here are always looking for things to complain, moan and whine about...
  10. As was reported elsewhere this set is now available again. Any more thoughts? I'm also on the fence on this one.
  11. Well put and I couldn't agree more. Had a major issue with them last year that couldn't be resolved and I was pretty angry with them, but they apologized and that meant case closed for me.
  12. Nice to see a couple of positive posts here about Mosaic, with thanks to charlesp and Larry Kart.
  13. You said earlier that the "Handmade" series "is no longer"; that is not correct - it may be different now (I don't follow it), but it's still there.
  14. Some of the Rhino guys did indeed leave and start Shout Factory in 2003, but Rhino did not fold, it continued under the wings of Warner Music, who also own Atlantic, Elektra, Asylum (and now also some ex-EMI labels such as Parlophone, EMI Classics and Virgin Classics) and probably one or two labels I forget. It was the Rhino retail store that went out of business; it wasn't part of Warner Music.
  15. Maybe, but he was not specifically referring to their "Handmade" series, so I assumed he meant the label as such. [edit] Just checked their site, and the "Handmade" series still seems to be alive: Rhino Handmade
  16. Over the years quite a few sets didn't happen due to licensing problems and licensing cost, and that included sets suggested by customers. If you are referring to Jordi Pujol, he's in Barcelona, Catalonia (or Catalunya in the local language), not Andalusia if that's what you meant. He founded and still owns Fresh Sound Records. Andorra is where many public-domain labels are based that some people think have links with Pujol.
  17. Scott just told me the Teddy Wilson set will be 7 discs from 1934-42 from Columbia and Brunswick with many previously unissued takes.
  18. Currently available at Jazz Messengers (updated)
  19. According to the Mosaic site the Bing Crosy, James P. Johnson, Clifford Jordan, Charles Mingus and Stanley Turrentine sets are expected to be available again in July 2017. The Louis Armstrong, Lester Young/Count Basie and Savoy sets are expected to be back in June, the MJQ set this month (May). Mosaic
  20. Not listed anymore: Jazz Messengers Mosaics
  21. Hesitated, but decided to post this: Scott Wenzel just told me the James P. Johnson set will be reprinted, but he couldn't say yet when. The Clifford Jordan is still a "maybe".
  22. I've privately discussed what I did with a few people and tried to explain that in my view the direction the deleted thread was taking had nothing to do anymore with the original topic, the state Mosaic is in; it had been taken over almost entirely by discussions about streaming etc., which, like Paul Secor said upthread, is of no relevance since it had been established that there won't/can't be downloading etc. at Mosaic. I talked with one of the moderators about it, but got a negative response, which pissed me off in such a way that I overreacted and deleted my first post and with it the whole thread. I acted too quickly and apologize for that, especially since responses concerning the actual topic went down with it. It's clear that my idea as to how a board should be moderated is very different from how the mods see it and that's fine, but it's also clear that this isn't my place (anymore) and I should never have returned. I only got back here because I wanted to give Mosaic some kind of boost and I hope it did, if only for a while. As I told one of the mods it's OK with me if the deleted thread can be recouped and reinstated, but I have no idea if that can be done. I'm out of here now.
