  1. He was Rita Reijs' second husband. Never liked his playing, too stiff to my ears.

So he did forget to renew... Hmmm... Glad there seem to be no other problems. Thanks Tony.
  6. At last some good news about the Fantasy catalog. Thanks Dan.

Please do, and keep us posted. I can't imagine he just forgot to renew his subscription (or whatever it's called). I hope he's not in financial difficulties with hat hut.
  8. I checked my Bruyninckx "Modern Jazz" discography (Vol.2: D-H), and found that Dizzy made very few small-group recordings for Limelight; these two were issued as far as I could see: Recorded on November 4, 1964 Dizzy Gillespie - trumpet James Moody - tenor saxophone, flute Kenny Barron - piano, bass (?), vocal Chris White - bass, guitar, vocal Kansas Fields - percussion Ann Henry - vocal Recorded on October 21, 1966 Dizzy Gillespie - trumpet James Moody - tenor saxophone, flute Kenny Barron - piano Billy Butler - guitar Frank Schifano - bass Otis Candy Finch, Jr. - drums Candido Camero - conga Panama Francis - percussion
  9. How did they "pick up" something they helped create? Seems to me that Limelight was a sort of "boutique" label for Mercury, with the emphasis on ultra-deluxe packaging. But maybe Mercury picked them up almost immediately after the label's formation? Can somebody get ahold of Jack Tracy? If anybody can speak authoritatively on the matter, it's him! According to the first edition of "The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz" (1988), Limelight was founded in 1962 as a subsidiary of Mercury and was directed by Jack Tracy. Obviously, Umphred was wrong with his "pick up" remark in his Goldmine guide.
  10. I still think it was a distribution deal Philips had with Mercury before the Polydor/Phonogram merger.
  11. From Goldmine's "Price Guide to Collectible Jazz Albums 1949-1969" (1994 edition, compiled by Neil Umphred): Philips: From inception through 1963, Philips used a black label with "Chicago 1, Illinois" on the bottom. From 1964-66, the black label had "Vendor: Mercury" on the bottom. From 1966-70, the black label with no print extra disclaimers on the bottom was used. Throughout this time, mono albums bore a "PHM" prefix and were part of the 200-000 series; stereo titles had a "PHS" prefix and were part of the 600-000 series. Gold or white label promos were issued. From 1970-74, a black label was used with "Manufactured and Distributed by Mercury" on the bottom." Mercury: (...) Labels distributed by them (Mercury) were primarily the Norman Granz labels Clef, Down Home, Norgran and Verve (through 1960) along with Savoy and Regent. Along the way they also picked up Keynote and Limelight before becoming a part of the PolyGram group.
  12. You mean they had the same distributor? The two labels didn't have any connection until much later, when Polydor, which acquired Mercury in the 1970s, and Phonogram, the Dutch parent of Philips, merged and became PolyGram. The two labels are now part of Universal, of course.
  13. I don't think so; the Mosaic page doesn't say anything about the Limelight recordings. Besides, Limelight was a subsidiary of Mercury and had nothing to do with Philips.
  14. Second that. Third that. But be forewarned, lots of heavy breathing. Then again, if you listen to some Keith Jarrett first, you won't even notice it. But it's French heavy breathing... Actually, it's three quarters Austrian. But at least their name was French... (As far as I know they disbanded)
  15. Second that. Third that. But be forewarned, lots of heavy breathing. Then again, if you listen to some Keith Jarrett first, you won't even notice it. But it's French heavy breathing...
  16. Don't blame me--I'm just the messenger. I'm not blaming you at all, I was referring to the Mosaic page.
  17. Pity they spelled the name of the Dutch record label Philips wrong...
  18. I just got an e-mail from Scott Wenzel at Mosaic that there are about 230 copies of the J.J. Johnson set left.
  19. My favorite Beethoven symphonies performances: 3 - Philharmonia Orchestra London/Otto Klemperer - EMI (the 1956 mono recording, not the later stereo remake) 3 - Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam/ Pierre Monteux - Philips 4 - Philharmonia Orchestra London/Otto Klemperer - EMI 5 and 7 - Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra/Carlos Kleiber - DG; these are absolutely stunning performances! 6 - Philharmonia Orchestra London/Otto Klemperer - EMI 9 - Philharmonia Orchestra London/Wilhelm Furtwängler - Tahra (live performance at the 1954 Luzern Festival, Switzerland)
  20. Don't know anything about period instrument Beethoven string quartets. The only period instrument recordings of string quartets I have are the performances of Haydn string quartets by the (French) Quatuor Mosaïques. They're great.
  21. And many happy returns!
  22. So??
  23. I forgot it, great performance too, at least for the middle Quartets, that I owned long time ago. Not to offend anyone, but I never really liked the Alban Berg Quartet, too mannered to my ears.
  24. I take it you're referring to the Budapest CDs?
