  1. I was wondering about that too.
  2. Yes, it was released at the time it was recorded in 1969. It's one of my favorite albums since. Know it's been reissued and should be available. Are you saying this has been reissued on CD? It's available on LP, but I've never seen it on CD anywhere.
  3. Finally! I've been waiting for years for these recordings to be reissued. I had both Mayfield Tangerine LPs and they were wonderful. Can't wait to hear them again!
  4. Have a wonderful day!
  5. OK, but not all systems have "EQ fiddling" facilities. I agree, though, that the current Armstrong, Holiday and Christian box sets are the best sounding remasters ever (although the JSP Armstrong set is very good too), system dependent or not. On my system the harshness more or less disappears after a 10 to 15-minute run in.
  6. I found these two sessions, originally released on the LP Jack's Groove (GNP 60): Recorded in LA, July 1957 Personnel: Jack Sheldon - trumpet Conte Candoli - trumpet Stu Williamson - valve trombone Vince DeRosa - French horn Red Callender - tuba Lennie Niehaus - alto saxophone Billy Root - tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone Pete Jolly - piano Buddy Clark - bass Mel Lewis - drums Tracks: Brown Cow On Green Dolphin Street I'm Also a Person I Had the Craziest Dream Arriverderci Recorded in LA in March 1959 Personnel: Jack Sheldon - trumpet Chet Baker - trumpet Stu Williamson - valve trombone Herb Geller - alto saxophone Art Pepper - alto saxophone Harold Land - tenor saxophone Paul Moer - piano Buddy Clark - bass Mel Lewis - drums Tracks: Anyhow Julie Is Her Name Aplomb Sunset Eyes J.S. I hope this helps.
  7. Recent Sony remasters (including the Armstrong and Holiday sets, and also the Charlie Christian set) and RVG remasters tend to sound a bit "pumped up" in the higher frequencies, at least on my system. This "boost" may well be the cause of the problems you're describing.
  8. Now I'm getting confused - Lon, are you saying the sound of the 2003 single-disc Armstrong and Holiday Legacy reissues is improved compared to the Armstrong Legacy box that was released in 2000 and the Holiday Legacy box that came out in 2001? I thought Bol was commenting on the sound of one of the 2003 Armstrong single-disc reissues. I second your Holiday - Young recommendation: A Musical Romance.
  9. I asked Mosaic how they would feel if European customers would be buying the CJB set (the one issued by Verve) in Europe rather than ordering it directly from them. This is the reply I just got: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you very much for your consideration for Mosaic Records finances. However, in this case this is a transaction we entered into with Verve fully realizing that many of our international customers would be buying from their local dealer to save on shipping, duties and taxes. This is much different from any "unauthorized" sets that may be released overseas or CDRs. Therefore save the money and maybe with additional funds more Mosaic sets may be bought. Again, thank you for the consideration. Regards, Mosaic Records ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Did you ever hear bluesman Tampa Red's late 1930s Bluebird recordings where he's "kazoo-ing" so abundantly? I did, and I almost lost the will to live...

    Solo Sax

I'm a Rivers fan, but vocalizing gives me the creeps, so... A few months ago I tried to get rid of Urs Leimgruber's hatOLOGY CD No Try No Fail because of Joëlle Léandre's (admittedly short) vocalizing on one track, but fortunately Tony ("Chaney") talked me into keeping it, since the rest of album is great. Her vocalizing still turns my stomach, though...

An additional recommendation: Evan Parker - Chicago Solo - Okka 12017
  13. I agree, the SACDs are the best sounding versions I've heard.
  14. ...As long as it's mint.
  15. That's a fair price. Rare nothingness is expensive these days.
  16. ...And mine was complete with inserts...
  17. Hmm, I got mine a few months ago for $210 and recently sold it for $220 on eBay (badly needed the money); I haven't seen this set go much higher these last few months.
  18. Here's an interesting post by "Montgomery Cleft" on a blues bulletin board about the quality and legality of several blues and jazz reissue labels, such as JSP.
  19. Of course Mosaic deserves our business, no doubt about that, and I'm willing to pay a few extra bucks to get the real thing; that's not my point - I was merely poiting out that in this case the Mosaic route is not the cheapest way to go; but it surely is the most sympathetic way!
  20. Ahhh... This brings back a few great memories...
  21. Have a great birthday my friend, and a few of those excellent beverages!
  22. The board was down again today until a few minutes ago. I hope the problem's solved...
  23. I'm afraid they go back to their older master tapes and do not make new transfers from the orgininal tapes. The French BMG branch issued its Rollins box independently from the US box, it seems to me. I avoided the French reissue of The Bridge because it sounded just like the box set issue, whereas the new US Bluebird first editions CD sounds magnificent!!! But I had to order that from a US mail order shop, they do not distribute it in Europe 'cause they wanna sell their own pressing! I compared the Classic Records gold disc, the French 24-bit remastered version, the Japanese 24-bit remastered reissue and the recent Bluebird first editions reissue of The Bridge, and to my ears the sound of the Japanese reissue was the most detailed, transparent and musical of them all, with the recent Bluebird a close second. The Classic CD sounded muffled and dated, and I didn't like the sound of the French reissue at all; I sold the Classic and French CDs and kept the other two.
