I got the CD today and just played it - it's great, with lots of tracks backed by Ray Charles in a quartet setting or with his band, with Hank Crawford, Teddy Edwards, David Newman, Marcus Belgrave, Howard Roberts and others. Highly recommended!
Here is an interesting post about reissue labels by "Montgomery Cleft" on a blues bulletin board - I know, I've also posted this link in another thread a while ago, but it might interest readers of this thread too.
Gianni Gebbia - Arcanum Major / Sonic Tarots Session - Rastascan; never mind the "tarots" reference - this is a great free solo sax session
Andrew Hill - Dance with Death - Blue Note; like I said before, this great session should really be reissued on CD
Maneri Ensemble - Going to Church - AUM Fidelity; beautiful free music
What about the Bax symphonies, Bev? They seem to be controversial, though I don't know why. Chandos have just released a "Complete" box set by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under Vernon Handley, which is one of Gramophone's "Editor's Choices" for December 2003. The review is rather good.
I've been listening to this one as well, and, apart from the "Tarots" reference which I don't care for at all, this is a great solo session, which I'd recommend to those even remotely interested in avant / improv
I wish DD would start posting here. I miss his posts about freer styles and European jazz in particular, especially now that he isn't posting much on AAJ anymore.
