"Return" to Abaco Island, Bahamas

This was the next thing I was going to ask you about! Great recount Paul. It is such a great island, left to its own accord. Thinking about development on that island is sickening. -

Beautiful stuff. Do you have any stories from Hope Town? There is a place there that our friend and wonderful fishing guide O'Donnell MacIntosh took us to after casting at bonefish all morning. They have a pool table, a jukebox, and a walk-up window where locals would stroll over to grab a cold beer. Small cinder block building. None of us had ever heard T.B. Sheets before, and we played it over and over again as we shot pool that afternoon. Only photographs would do this place justice. We were certainly the only white folks in there for some time. They were great hosts and enjoyed our taste in music. I think this was a hidden gem in that jukebox that was always overlooked for some of the more familiar tunes. I would love to be back there that day. Hope Town. I know what you mean about the sand bars. O'Donnell took us out to some flats well off-shore. Before we knew it, we were stepping around an island! As the water shallowed, bonefish became visible everywhere! It was incredible. Seeing them to cast to is only half the battle though... getting them to follow your shrimp is a whole 'nother thing! The flats seemed to go on indefinitely. It was truly a walking on water moment. -

I've been to Abaco, Treasure Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Hope Town, etc. a couple of times. We know a bassist/cabbie there named Lucky. He'll pick us up at the airport and take us to the package store first thing. My brother and I, along with he and his friends drink Guinness Stout out of bottles out front. They say it makes you "strong like bull... makes you fuck all night." Interesting that you were born there. I'd be interested to hear more if you're willing to keep typing. -

I guess my question for everyone would be "what DO you skimp on?" -

I'm curious about the coffee maker deal... I've been using a free coffee maker for years. What should I look for in a coffee maker? I don't need the bells and whistles. When its time to make coffee, I can walk down the steps and grind it, measure it and press the button (although I have always had a timer, it is nice sometimes). I have a permanent filter that I wash and reuse. Is there really an upgrade, or is it all looks? Thanks. -
For Rhode Island, the most interesting from a tourist perspective, are the most remote. Depending on where you are in CT, Westerly RI is pretty amazing. I remember being struck by the architecture there, though it is certainly not mid-century. Block Island is at least one day in and of itself (due to remoteness and otherworldliness), and there are plenty of great places tucked away all over the state. I'm sure you will be in Providence and Newport? Vint and Dave and Tom and Dmitry can all give you great ideas on RI. We all have our favorite spots. p.s. Aside from the whaling museum in New Beige, you would probably be ok to circumvent that route. Not exactly a tourism bureau over there. It can be a tough town. I've seen it and it was a culture shock. Then again, maybe that's the reason to go. Portuguese fishing town. *question: is it "whirlwind tour" or "world wind tour"? I always thought it was whirlwind.

Do you have a good source for the Graves disc by chance? Chez.

Screw the 25 year olds then. Make your own gigs. Make people interested. Make people want to come out and see you. When the 25 year olds come around, you can tell them to go f themselves. -
I just picked up a Haino disc today in the used bins. Everytime I see him now, I think of the Kaoru Abe biopic Endless Waltz. Here's a live clip of Abe from the late 70s.

Huge bummer. I'm still in disbelief. -
Dmitry bought a copy of Phineas' Rainbow a couple of winters ago as he was passing through Richmond, VA in his new car. Personnel includes: Phineas Newborn, Jr. (piano); Calvin Newborn (guitar); George Joyner (bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums). Recorded between October 16, 1956 and October 22, 1956. Originally released on RCA (LPM 1421). Includes liner notes by Bill Coss. Review: Down Beat (1/02, p.54) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A beauty..." Hell of a review, eh? I wonder what's hiding under those ellipses?

I'm sure this player is not up to the quality you are looking for, but I've had a Kenwood 5-disc that I bought used in 1997 for a few bucks. Never once had an issue. I've moved four times in the past ten years and haven't a problem (until I bought a couple of SACDs by accident)! I'm very curious to "step-up" into entry-level audio world, but I always read about quality control issues and wonder why people spend all this money? Because the customer service is good? I mean, I get it. It is a quest for better sound, but...

Off-topic PLUG: For anyone that's interested, my brother's band has just released their second full-length which features three of Henri Rousseau's paintings on the packaging. In cooperation with Jim A., I am going to be offering this album for sale here in the next day or so. Two dollars of every purchase will go to the org.org cause. Stay tuned. Alright, let's get back on track. -

I love it. I knew you'd like it since you already drink 100% juices. Odwalla makes a thick drink. A good one at that. Nakeds are even thicker. Açai has a very good flavor to it too. Pomegranate can be too sour sometimes. Both are very beneficial. -

what's the brand, please? Bossa Nova is the brand that I see around here the most. So good, and WAY more anti-oxidants than Pomegranite. -
Yeah, my brother has one of the latest iMacs (I have one of the last iMacs without Intel inside). His mouse has buttons on the side, a roll ball, and is always doing things I don't want it to do. I'm just not used to it. I'm sure it is very convenient once you get the hang of it. I am a huge fan of trackpads. I find that I can draw just as accurate a path with my finger as I can with a mouse.

Styrofoam is the worst. Anyone here who uses styrofoam for anything anymore, please find an alternative.

My brother had an XM receiver a couple years ago. I seem to remember listening to a "jazzzzzzzzzz... zzz... zzz... zzz... zzz... zz... zzzzz... zzz... zzz..." channel. You know "Jazz To Fall Asleep At The Wheel To On A Rainy Night" type shit.

elder don peterson, why don't you try flavored carbonated waters? Italian soda for instance, or sparkling mineral water with a wedge of lime, or orange, or whatever fruit you like. I'm telling you... Açai Juice is fantastic!
