Happy Birthday Chuck Nessa!

Happy Birthday Chuck! -
To My Son is my personal favorite of the trio albums. Absolute. Randy, I think your idea is complimentary of Walt's playing.
-
Oh no. I still had hope that he would play out again. I've been listening to To My Queen on vinyl over and over again this week. I'm constantly impressed by the fullness of his tone, regardless of how quickly he is playing. This is even more evident on vinyl than the CD that I've been listening to all this time. It is possible to miss a man you've never met. Life Rays Walt. Life Rays.

Jim, and those who knew Theo, thank you for this glance into the life of a true individual. My sincerest condolences to everyone who knew Mr. Alfredson. -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??

I've been flipping ...WHERE WOULD I BE? by Jim Hall on Muse for the past hour or so! In fact, it made me order a vinyl pressing of THE RELATIVES by Jeff Parker. -
Bad ass organ sh!t from Paul's Mall in Boston. I picked it up on vinyl for $6 a couple of weeks ago and HOT DAMN. Two tunes per side. Four sides. Two organs. Three guitars. Drums and percussion. I think if the whole jam band scene hadn't heard any other music other than this 2LP, it would be exactly where it is today. Take that at face value, but I hear so much in this music that came AFTER it... and this is just one night at a club with the mics on. This album may have been discussed elsewhere, but I had to throw it out there. This is a lot of fun. Find it! As a side note, I also picked up a Von Freeman Willis Jackson album on Muse for cheap that burns in an entirely different way. Man, I'm really enjoying the turntable.

Didn't Brandon Burke write an article for Wax Poetics on this very subject?

It does, but everything is now rated energy star. If you are like me, the tv is only on a few hours a day max. It really won't have a noticeable effect on your monthly bill, especially if you already own a tv.

I went with Panasonic. 42" PZ700U. It was rated very highly in Consumer Reports, and at avsforum.com . More information than you will ever need to know about televisions, etc. there, including superstitions. This is a plasma set without any of the anti-glare treatment on the glass. It does a great job of diffusing reflections. I have it set up beside a wall of windows and have zero issues. Then again, when am I watching tv in the middle of the day? Blinds work wonders I suppose. Unless you have a serious glare issue, I would go with plasma. Beautiful pictures. As far as plasma is concerned, if money is no object, Pioneer. Still, most of these folks say the price difference between Pioneer and Panasonic is NOT WORTH IT. Panasonic owns the plasma market, with exception of the folks that want to pay twice as much for a little more black.

I also lost on The Shape of Jazz to Come... sold for $71.00! Ridiculous. I thought we were in a recession! -
Same here. You know, there is no "perfect" situation for raising a child. If anything, Juno seemed to realize this and decided that the kid would be better off with Garner's character raising her as a single mom, than the kid would have been with Juno or with Garner and her husband's broken relationship. If you know anyone who has gone through the adoption process, Garner's actions seem much less creepy. I just saw the movie a couple of weeks ago... still fresh on the mind I guess, and a familiar story in a lot of ways.

Gotcha. I did win cecil taylor conquistador. I always liked this album. Lost out on Billy Harper Capra Black, Lester Bowie Numbers 1&2, Freddie McCoy Listen Here and so on and so on. It seemed fishy, but I figured it could be a security measure. -

I keep getting outbid by members (username "_***_") on some lps from the same seller. examples: e***e t***b e***b Each of them have a decent amount of transactions, and they are all in Music>Records, Music>CDs etc. Often times only bidding once on an item, though there are a few where they have bid 25-30 times on the same item. I haven't used ebay too much in the past. I have maybe a dozen transactions total. Is this a common username format, or is this someone with multiple usernames raising the price on their own auctions? -
I thought the setting was interesting. Aside from the adopting couple's house, there were no signs of modern day America. Along with the way the kids spoke, their clothes, the bands and films mentioned, it was a very general turn of the century setting. Similar to what Wes Anderson does with his films.

Thanks Kevin. How do I know which records are made from a digital master? I'm not in the $50 lp market either...
-
Actually I think Blue Serge is still available because of it otherwise... Why pay that? www.vinyl.com has 3 different versions available new. Might not sound as great as an original, but should sound fine and you save hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars. Kevin, I would like to buy Out To Lunch! and vinyl.com came up in my search, but it gives me zero details about the pressing. The price is fantastic, but I don't want to buy some sh!t vinyl. I have this album on CD (more than one actually), and want a quality LP. How do I find out more about what vinyl.com is selling? Does anyone know where I can get a nice heavy pressing of this album? I looked at jazzrecordscene.com... $200 for Out To Lunch! Sorry, but I can't deal with that. I guess these are the folks that spend thousands on a turntable.

Hey guys. A friend of mine is selling a Fender Twin Reverb that Jandek played on. He would like to make fans aware before some schmuck buys it off of ebay. Where would he go to make the Corwood customer base aware?

Thanks guys. It was a good one. Two great gifts... my wife had a Jon Shaw print (Longevity Milt Jackson) matted and framed for me, and I bought myself a turntable! Based on recommendations here and funds, I went with the Pro-ject Debut III. It arrives next week. First spin will be either Walt Dickerson "To My Queen" or Eric Dolphy/Booker Little "Memorial Album". I can't wait. I'll check in more often. Thanks Chuck. It has been a while. Now I really wish I had LPs to fill those Nessa jackets you gave me!!! p.s. once the print is framed and matted, I'll be sure to post photos! -
I went up to Richmond to see them on Halloween last year. Matt White had written arrangements for the complete Michael Jackson Thriller album. Pretty impressive stuff and FUN. It was a great time because just about everyone in the club knew all of the lyrics. Not to mention the bass lines! We boogied all night. I saw them again around Christmastime. Matt passed books of Christmas sheet music out to the entire club and we called out tunes for the entire second set and sang along. It felt amazing, I'd never felt so close to a hundred strangers before. A warm Guinness comfort in the golden light of a bar during the holidays, back in the hometown that I'd move away from over ten years ago. I also just saw them again earlier this month. They were working out some new material for the Chicago trip. The tune, "Satchel Page" hit so hard that my aunt, a hardcore and extremely myopic bluegrass fan, had a minor awakening, or so I'm told by my cousin, who attempted to explain why all of the horns were improvising. I'm interested to hear how the collaboration turned out. I know that this board is tough on Ken Vandermark, and I'll admit, I don't think Fight The Big Bull is ready for Roscoe Mitchell, but I do see this as a Minor Move.
-
Did anyone in Chicago get to the Fight The Big Bull/Ken Vandermark show at Hungry Brain this past week? I'm told it was recorded and will be released by Vandermark at some point.

I'll put up two for now. One album that I absolutely love (Malian) : Toumani Diabate | Djelika And a recent find (Congolese) : Mbilia Bel & Seigneur Ley Rochereau & l'Afrisa International | Eswi yo wapi

From what I gather, I won't really be able to appreciate 1080 on a 42" screen. Still, the more I read, the less I understand.
