Pretty sure those guys use something else as lubricant. You will not be seeing an alternate cover for the East Lansing show featuring Astro-Glide. -

29TH ANNUAL CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL
.:.impossible replied to robviti's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Thanks Larry. I'm going to take your advice. Any "bad" spots in Wrigley? I've been watching WGN since elementary school, but I've never been inside. I'm not planning on spending a fortune on tickets. -

Thanks for the heads up on this. Costly, but I think I'd be interested in a couple of these. -
29TH ANNUAL CHICAGO JAZZ FESTIVAL
.:.impossible replied to robviti's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Coincidentally, my wife and I will be in Chicago that weekend. The trip wasn't planned around the festival... we found out about it after the fact. Bonus! Mark, where can I find more info on aftershows? Unfortunately, I am going to miss Exploding Star, but plan on making Keefe Jackson's set. We are planning on seeing the Cubbies play a day game, so it'll be either Friday or Saturday. Any advice on tickets? -
Help My Wife and I Eat Better and Lose Weight

Dan, get a subscription to Cooking Light magazine. My wife is a recipe nut. Aside from the many books that we have accumulated over the years, she also has a full three ring binder or two with clippings from this magazine. I think there is some good advice here, but what do I know. Moderation has always worked for me. How do you feel about swimming laps? For me, it is the best thing in the world. I like the solitude of it. Basically counting strokes in different time signatures while getting an amazing workout without the distractions of the workout room. -
Agreed. I know this is Clem's favorite hip-hop album. He drops it every chance he gets. I don't feel it. Illmatic I feel. Hip Hop is Dead... I don't know. I think so much of what Nas has done since Illmatic has been below par, finally an album that is just about par and the critics agree... Nas is back! Wishful thinking, but it will never happen again. This Wajeed & The Bling 47 Crew thing from Detroit too... a friend of mine gave me this advance copy THE WAR LP and told me how hot it was. I listened to it once and thought, ok this sounds ok. That's it. I don't know. I'm going to listen to it again because I keep getting told how great this shit is. I don't know. The good news is MM.. FOOD is being re-issued!

I haven't heard any of it, and have hardly read anything about it. What is it that doesn't work? From the Dilla camp, it is a sprawling mess? Something about that really appeals to me. Maybe its floating around somewhere without the vocals. I don't know...
-
I'll probably hear it one of these days. I read a review of it somewhere. I haven't heard "Electric Circus" yet either, which was produced by Dilla and was apparently a disaster. Oddly enough, I was watching PBS the other night and The Chess Records Story was on. Common was invited in for the revisit of "Electric Mud". Have y'all seen this? It is weird. Weird. Cool to see Pete Cosey though. p.s. Guess who our tour guide is on the PBS doc... your boy CHUCK D. He CHOSE Common for the "Electric Mud" remake.

Your favorite TENOR player on the scene today
.:.impossible replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Not sure if I've ever heard these words uttered by a jazz fan before! I like a limited amount of players. I love Desmond, Mulligan, Turrentine, Rollins, Mobley, etc. Just seems most players are just trying to sound like Trane so that their sound is actual no where near as good, but very unoriginal. I mainly listen to guitarists, pianists, vibists, organists, etc. Can't think of one modern tenor player at the moment I really do love. None of these instruments have the natural tonal palette or dynamic range that a reed or a brass can have. Not loving any contemporaries is one thing, but writing off saxophones altogether is... wow. I think most everyone here loves the instruments you listed above. A lot of people on this board even play those instruments, but I don't think many would step up to say that ANY of those instruments (without mechanical effect) is as personally expressive as a saxophone. Note choice is but a small part of what makes a reeds player great. -
Tell Me about Charlotte, NC
.:.impossible replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've lived in both, and I'd rather live in Wilmington. Charlotte and Raleigh are both landlocked and hot as hell, but Raleigh seems to be coming around from a planning perspective. More public space in the plans is a good thing. Still, I wouldn't consider either of them "world-class" or "east coast-class" cities, despite the hype that Charlotte is l"ittle Atlanta." Not to mention the level orange air quality index. Aside from the beaches, Cape Fear River, Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic, Wilmington is seriously lacking in quality public space. We want bigger parks. I am lucky to live within a few miles of two great parks. Still, I want to see the rest of New Hanover County developed in a much different way. My wife is the county long-range environmental planner, so there is hope! -

Sorry for the inconsistent file sizes, but these should be fine for screen-res. Nothing special really... quick and dirties. I just don't like not having cover art!
