I was always into Floyd during their classic years. Inexplicably (at least to me), more people than I ever would have imagined prefer the Syd Barrett year(s). Personally, I have enjoyed that music to a certain degree, but I've realized that I would need to be in a perpetually drug-induced state to reap further rewards from it. I've also had this bothersome feeling that they could have been more if they had a drummer who was more "present" than Nick Mason. Nothing against him; he served the music well enough, but he just doesn't go that extra mile if you know what I mean. I've always loved Gilmour's writing and playing. His solo on "Comfortably Numb" still makes my hair stand on end to this day, and his phrasing on "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is truly exemplary. Waters is a great composer, but I find his obsession with the dark side of life disturbing to say the least (I cannot listen to "The Wall" without being transported into his dark little mind), and I found his bass playing and singing to be average at best. On the subject of "Animals", I love this record, and always felt that it did not receive the radio airplay it deserved because of the length of the songs. Further, it is interesting to learn that both Gilmour and Waters felt the band were done after DSotM, simply because of its success and the fact that they felt that, with it, they had accomplished all that they set out to accomplish. I was further shocked to learn that "Wish You Were Here" (my favorite Floyd record from this period) was basically a hastily put-together hodge podge of songs, and that Roger Waters absolutely hated Roy Harper's vocal on "Have A Cigar".

Werner lost a large part of his funding a few years ago. It's more difficult to release things when you have to pony up your own money. Hang in there. I consider him one of the great European champions of jazz. He still releases many worthwhile recordings, IMHO. If he never gets back around to those Braxtons, I'll still be able to die a happy man!

I read an interview with Jack DeJohnette (I believe at AllAboutJazz). Jack mentioned that Dave's wife passed away. This should explain the recent inactivity.

I just might cave one day and drop the $150 people want for Willisau. I've been kicking myself since that day over 15 years ago when I picked it up and put it down at the Tower at Lincoln Center because I thought $60 was too much. If you look at the Hat website, its reissue is at least on the upcoming releases schedule.

Mosaics That Could Have Been, But Weren't
JETman replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
True...the original premise was based on the Buddy Rich PJ material - could have been a Mosiac but wasn't, and probably just as well b/c all the material ended up coming out on mass-distribution single CDs. As did a lot of the components of other EMI based Mosaics (e.g. Lee Morgan Fifties). -
Great idea (its been around for quite a while -- see Crimson who would charge $96 up front back in 1998 for 6 annual releases), although websites like Artist Share have taken this way too far, charging as much as $25 per cd plus some inordinately high shipping charges. Witness the upcoming Jim Hall archival 3 cd set for $75 plus!

I don't agree that he's a "poor" musician, that's your opinion. Van Halen has some great songs, they are a fun "party rock" band, does music have to be "significant" in some way to get approval? It shouldn't, it's supposed to be about entertainment. I listen to lots of serious music, but once in awhile it's nice to put on some straight ahead party rock and cut loose. At least Van Halen actually PLAYS instruments, how many million selling pop stars of today could even tune a guitar let alone play it? Oy! This is the age old question, isn't it? I for one can "party" to serious, well-played music. It does NOT have to be dumbed-down for me to cut loose. Zeppelin's songs were pretty much about the same things that VH's were, but VH could not even hold a candle to LZ in terms of musicianship, production, arrangement, etc. Btw, don't start a whole "who's a better guitarist" tangent. I've heard worse, it's a fairly simple rock band, he doesn't have to be Tony Williams. As far as the financial kind of "success", I'd say 80 million albums sold worldwide ain't too shabby. Isn't it sad when excuses like this are routinely given for poor musicianship??? I'd say that the 80 million albums sold worldwide is more of a reflection on people settling for less than a reflection on the band. No, what's sad is when narrow definitions of how things should be stand in the way of actually enjoying something for what it is, which is simply this: a fun album, a good album, not a great album, but a lot better than anyone had any right to expect it to be, and easily better than anything from their Hagar days. You are soooooo missing my point!

Alex Van Halen's drumming has never been a recipe for success.

Mosaics That Could Have Been, But Weren't
JETman replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Some years ago I spoke to MC about the possibility of doing a box containing Jarrett's Atlantic/Vortex material. He said that this indeed had been on Mosaic's wishlist for a long time, and that he could see doing a Select consisting of the Jarrett's trio recordings for the label. It seems like this has fallen off the radar. When I spoke to Scott the other day, he confirmed that the Singles series is dead, and that there would not be any Selects released this year. -
Are there any box bargains currently available?
JETman replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Is there proof that JSP is actually lifting transfers? Even the most recent ones are done by Kendall. I have the 7 Djangos, the Satch Hot 5's and 7's, the Jelly Roll Morton, the Charlie Christian and the Sidney Bechet, fwiw. -
Yes, I agree with your assessment. One can't even catch all the boxed sets with one click anymore. To find them now, you have to know which artists they fall under. Truly odd. When I sent my email to Cam about the faulty Murray set, I was never even asked if I had purchased it. Maybe they finally realized that a lot of people were taking advantage of the offer without having done so. How they did this, I'm not sure. Maybe it had to do with printing more replacements than faulty sets?

WTF? I hope this set WILL be released and not fade away.... Good thing I have been bingeing on some Analogue Productions Blue Note SACD's and the Nat King Cole SACD's.... But still....I remember the original release date was November now it's June? WTF, Scott assured me they WILL get the clearances necessary to release it! With the major labels having skimmed most of their staff more than a few years ago, it just takes more time. OK? Thanks for the info regarding the release. I'm not mad at anybody, you (Jetman, J.A.W.) or Scott, etc. I'm just a little frustrated, and in the back of my mind---perhaps illogically, wondering if this set will ever come out. I have mine pre-ordered, and am TRYING to be patient, but the constant delays have be disheartening. I was Mosaic to be ok, and the recording industry to be ok...perhaps a pipe dream nowadays. Sorry, you came off as shooting the messenger. The fact is that the recording industry HAS changed, and Mosaic is NOT as ok as it used to be. They keep on forging on though, and I think feel a real sense of duty to their customers. Don't give up hope yet! Me? I keep wishing for the CD to finally die so I can truly enjoy my collection which is literally thousands deep.

All Knicks fan enthusiasm aside, I don't believe that Lin is destined to have a remarkable career over the long haul. And did anyone see Baron Davis' prediction that the Knicks would win the championship THIS year??? First we get that idiot Dolan predicting that the Rangers would win the Stanley Cup this year, and now THIS. They must have attended Rex Ryan's annual BOAST.
-
Not yet posted on the website, but according to a conversation I had with Scott today, Mosaic is hoping for a June release. It seems that the clearance necessary for some of the material has yet to be obtained. The Ella/Webb set is scheduled for June, but, in Scott's words, will be pushed back if the Hawkins arrives in June.

Apparently, he was the guy the Saints' assistant coaches instituted the program to knock off!

I think we've all won in that regard at one time or another. What did it get US?

Zeppelin or Donaldson? -
None of this matters. In the court of public opinion, Ryan Braun will be a BIG loser.

It's funny that the article talks about possible penalties that the NFL could dole out for such actions. However, loss of championship is not one of them. Hmmmm.

You've got 2 of his best right there. Add the one preceding "Outback" called "Joe Farrell Quartet", and the first 2 Return to Forever records, and you'll be good to go. The first one isn't available as far as I know. I have the RTF albums. http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Farrell-Quartet/dp/B000008AW4/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1330578082&sr=1-1 LOL

Although the Lin story is a nice one, it's been close to 20 years since I've really cared about the Knicks. I'm afraid that the personalities of the athletes in the NBA make it difficult to do so. I'm tired of all the hip-hop, in your face bullshit that has become an essential part of the professional game. It is quite shameful that a franchise so important to the league's success hasn't managed to win a title since 1973! I'm praying that the Dolans, who own Cablevision, sell my Rangers before they destroy them too.
