Monk Blue Note Genius of Modern Music, CDs vs LPs
RiRiIII replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
I just received the Milt Jackson Blue Note SHM-CD and it is clearly mentioned on the rear card that it contains "original remastering by RVG" - does it mean that the well known RVGs have been re-remastered on top for these SHM-CDs? Do the Genius Monk SHM-CDs bear the same credit to RVG? Thanks. Rudy Van Gelder mastered the 12" LP, hence "original remastering by Rudy Van Gelder." True, but this is not mentioned on other SHM-CDs as well, whose the original LP versions were also remastered by RVG. -

Of all these new SHM-CDs, the Monks are two discs I can recommend without reservation. Let the board know what you think after you've heard it. Monk Vol 1 arrived today. Tracks reflect the original 12inch 1500 series issues and not the chronological sequence that the McMaster or RVG offered. That said the programming works very nicely even if it does mean sessions split across the 3 CDs. Immediately I was struck by how open the sound is. Having ditched the 80s MCMaster's I only have the RVGs for comparison. Leaner and cleaner sounding on the whole with more 'air' around the instruments, results in better separation. I had though the RVGs sounded pretty good but even after a brief spin this new TYCJ sounds better. Thanks! Perhaps it was covered before, but dont the 2 Monk SHM-CDs inlclude all recordings made available with the 2 RVGs CDs? Is there a 3rd as well? By the way I see that the RVGs cds have 39 tracks in total, while the SHM-CDs have 15+22=37 tracks acc to cdjp listings. Is this correct? EDIT: I did my homework and I think the 3rd cd is the Milt Jackson one? EDIT #2: and of course I had raised the same question some pages before... sorry for this...

Thanks. All of them are in this batch (except of the Dollar Brand). The Bley Ballads is very expensive at amazon as 2nd hand. The Dollar Brand is part of the April 8 batch: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UCCE-9255 Right you are!

It seems that the ECM 45th anniversary SHM-CD japanese series ("ECM FOR TOMORROW") are as follows: 08 April 2015 : http://www.universal-music.co.jp/other/ecm45th-anniversary/cat/ecm-encore http://www.universal-music.co.jp/other/ecm45th-anniversary/cat/ecm2015 23 April 2014 N.B.: the Mal Waldron Free At Last tiltle is listed here but it belongs to the above batch - many from the 2014 titles are oop at cdjapan. http://www.universal-music.co.jp/other/ecm45th-anniversary/cat/ecm-now http://www.universal-music.co.jp/other/ecm45th-anniversary/cat/ecm-selection and from the non jazz new series: http://www.universal-music.co.jp/other/ecm45th-anniversary/cat/ecm-new-series

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/products?term.list_id=ecm_shmcd_20150213 What would be your recommendations to somebody not really into the ECM's jazz output? I do not see any new remastering info. Thanks Alex

Any idea why Lou Donaldson 's "Cosmos" reissued also in these SHM-CD series, gets only one star (out of five) at allmusic.com? Is it so bad - or even very good? Thanks. http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/TYCJ-81073 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmos_%28Lou_Donaldson_album%29

I just received the Gene Ammons All Star Sessions SHM-CD. The first two 1955 sound fabulous... And the dedicated Ira Gitler notes made for these series are invaluable.

Grant Green's "Latin Bit" SHM-CD is on its way.

Thanks! After my checking e.g. for 6 Prestige SHM cds the total cost is: HMV: 8640 + 3200 [only EMS OPTION AVAILABLE - 2 days delivery!]= 11.840 yen CDJP: 10.800 + 1200 (SAL - 3 weeks delivery) = 12.000 or 13.560 (registered mail) [plus some extra points resulting to approx 500 yen discount]. HMV has pleny (all) of these titles in stock, while some of them are already oop at cdjp.

The version with bonus tracks including the previously unissued normaphone transcription of the Mahler Violin Concerto. Of course such a VC was never composed... More details pls!

The Charles Lloyd "Discover!" CD sounds fabulous. It is a 2014 DSD remaster. What a nice recording and engaged performance this is. I did not know this record.

No problem with my CD 28 from the Reiner box.

I had no idea about this label. These Jones/Carter/Williams Trio CDs seem very intriguing and from what I read especially their Village Vanguard ones are very special. Can you confirm? http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/person/271317

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
RiRiIII replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oddly disc 6 of the Farlow is the only disc of any Mosaic that wouldn't rip for me. I tried two MacBooks and two disc drives and ended up ripping the Elite instead. I've never noticed the distortion. same here, I couldn't rip the disc also (on top of the 30 secs of distortion at the start of track 1) No probem at all with my Cd 6. Ripped and played without distortion. It is a Mosaic Set #1608. -
Just a notice regarding "The Cats" SHM-CD: this one had 2-4 weeks availablity when I placed my order at cdjapan which is normally an oop notion; however just 4 days after ordered placement it is shipped and went back to 3-5 days status.
-
Several from these beautiful series are going oop, so I went ahead and just ordered some Gene Ammons (Happy Blues, Funky, Jammin, All Star sessions), Doug Watkins' Soulnik, Olio, Cats, Teddy Charles Coolin and Collaboration West.
-
That was also my conclusion. SHM regular CD And the regular CD is already out of print only three months after its October 2014 release date. Cdjapan very often shown titles as oop, while they are still readily available elsewhere; http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Sonny-Clark_000000000002020/item_Cool-Struttin-24bit-Rmt_5508885 The regular CD is oop also at hmv.

Do you know how to do a search that lists them all, Lon? http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/products?term.list_id=bluenote_shmcd_20150114

HDTracks has it: http://www.hdtracks.com/a-new-perspective I like TOCJ 4124. Thanks!

Has "A New Perspective" ever gotten an audiophile treatment? What is the preferred digital version? Thanks.

My copies shipped within EU, still have not arrived. I assume this happens due to holidays bottlenecking.
