  1. You mean no more Mosaic singles or just no Iron Men?
  2. In fact the LPs are quadrophonic so the existing recording could have been served up on multichannel SACD. The costs of that were not warranted, it seems.
  3. These ECM LPs have been and gone for me, but I *will* be picking up Gnu High (to replace a damaged vinyl copy) and I'd recommend it. I would be curious to see some of the as yet unissued-on-CD JAPOs as well as improv style ECMs.
  4. Well... he seems to have taken the idea from the Stockhausen of Gruppen which is for three orchestras and conductors, and from other post-Darmstadt multi-conductor works. What you get in Gruppen and in Webern is intensity and economy. These are both very tightly composed works - masterpieces. Anyone who doesn't know Gruppen but is disappointed or puzzled by the Braxton should still make a point of checking out the Stockhausen piece - same for Webern. As for the thirty minute cut don't even get me started... David -- Just to be clear, are you saying that Opus 82 is essentially derivative of the Webern of the Symphony and the Stockhausen of Gruppen and aso inferior to those works because what "you get in Gruppen and in Webern is intensity and economy" and what you get in Opus 82 is ... (you fill the blank)? I know the Webern Symphony very well; my recording of Gruppen is not accessible to me now. I am saying that Opus 82 runs in the opposite direction to those works by virtue of its length. The *cut* is longer than either of those works. I'm not keen, no, but I might be missing something. Stockhausen is most definitely a role model for AB who IIRC had a photo taken at this period of him poring over a Stockhausen score (in the Radano book - uhh, but I might be misremembering I can't check). The pic is intended for posterity I feel sure. AB's opera project has clear analogies with Stockhausen. It may be that such a long and sprawling work is aimed at something else altogether - maybe someone out there would make a case for it?

  6. FWIW the nice price TOCJ RVG of Movin' and Groovin' is imminent, with Headin' South to follow in November. I'm guessing that means more to come, though whether these will come out as 'domestic' issues remains to be seen. PS I don't know why I am even writing this. I don't know how many more of these (re)reissues I can stand...
  7. I heard it was withdrawn because of its controversial title. It is being reissued as 'Creation'.
  8. You can comfort yourself in the knowledge that a soon-to-be-out-of-print Mosaic is a whale of a lot better investment than most stocks these days! Greg Mo You're not wrong. I won't go into detail, but I will say this: ouch.
  9. Four Orchestras is not good. Perhaps there was pressure to include it? It will take up 2 CDs I should think. One or two other titles here are not that thrilling either. Braxton titles for Hat easily sell runs of 3000 so it will be interesting to see if that fan base pounces...
  10. I get the impression that apart from the three titles on amazon.co.uk the other euromosaics are OOP. That's just an impression but over time they disappeared from amazon. Maybe like regular Mosaic they don't necessarily issue the whole run - i.e. these are slow movers so when they get to the end of a batch they maybe decide not to reprint. Just an uneducated guess...
  11. Europadisc has reductions on Verve box sets including three Euromosaics (Basie, Farlow, Nelson). Amazon.co.uk has similar prices on Basie, Farlow, Nelson. Not as low as previous bargains, and not so many titles, but UK residents might be interested.
  12. I feel that after centuries of missed opportunity to reproduce album covers in their 12 x 12 booklets Mosaic ought to start making amends by publishing high quality 12 x 12 books of album art. They can take a few pointers from us by starting with paired volumes of Album Covers Showing Women/Men in Big Hats (uhh... it could be one of those books that starts from either end, just flip it over and turn it round). A niche product, I know, but for the mass market they could issue a selection from our very own Sexiest Album Covers thread (Now That's What I Call Album Art Volumes I, II, III, IV, etc.)(or maybe just Phwooarrr!! Volumes I, II, etc). Oh and of course a Marte Roling Fontana covers would be a no-brainer - it would get round all the vexed questions about ownership of the music (who needs it?) and cut to the chase.
  13. I reckon Bixieland is really Simon Cowell. Talk about Mr Nasty - phew! Or maybe this is how Si talks when he actually *does* like something.
  14. Ever tried to rip a CD that sounded fine on your CD player but, uhh, came out all electronically 'scuffed' if you played it on your PC or tried to rip it? The answer is yes, isn't it? Unlike some of you guys I haven't gone in for ripping so much. When I do rip though I notice a good proportion of CDs, some old, some new, which won't play or rip that well. They aren't viable. This is because CD players are designed to disguise errors but PC software mostly doesn't. This I think means that CDs are defective by design. Which insight, I think, has tipped me over the edge. No more CDs. Tell me if I'm wrong. Who is going to replace all the CDs I have which won't play properly on my PC - lots of them of course several years old?
  15. I've been hit hard by DHL so avoid them like the plague ! Really? Tell me more! So far so good for me, touch wood...
  16. I ask Mosaic to use DHL, who deliver immediately and bill you for duties later. The service charge they add is very low.
  17. I preordered this on amazon.co.uk for £9.99. It is a double CD. Thanks for the heads up.
  18. And it's ON SALE with a discount of no less than $0.11. What more can I say? BUY BUY BUY!!!
  19. Here's the one on ebay for anyone else who is interested. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CD-JAZZ-ART-BLAKEY-S...7QQcmdZViewItem
  20. I doubt if this helps. http://basie.hp.infoseek.co.jp/music/CD/jazz/4208.html
  21. Never heard it. Never (until this moment) seen it. Go figure.
  22. I prefer DHL, on the grounds that (1) they deliver the goods asap and bill you later for the charges (2) they only make a very low charge for the service of assessing and collecting the tax/duty. Oh, and the higher you declare the value the more the recipient will have to pay.
  23. I'm just not willing to play CC roulette.
