LF: Modern Jazz Quartet Japan Mini LP CD
David Ayers replied to jbs-tom's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Hard to find I should think. Here's a better image (if it works). -
OK - an RVG of Song of Singing and a Conn of the three quartet tracks. Final offer.
-
You missed a 1989 US cd - CDP 7 46401 2. Ah OK. I'm surpised it hasn't been done since. A better album experience without Drone maybe? But an issue with those same tracks would go down pretty well, I'd have thought.
-
Drone was reissued with its sessionmates on The Song of Singing. Hm - well that would be enough for me... Looking aorund I see that the JRVG has those extra tracks but I can't see any other issue that does (did I miss it?). So a straight US issue of the JRVG sounds like a good way forward from my point of view. That said, I know there are Corea completists out there so maybe a Select is on the cards.
-
Yes, although one or two titles haven't yet appeared as USRVGs (Duke Pearson, Profile, for one).
-
Why not? Much of the material is long drawn out group improv. One ends bizarrely in a collective chant: 'Physical Universe - We Exist!' I'm not saying the material isn't interesting - a trio track called Drone is the highlight, probably - but I'd say it's more interesting than thrilling. That said, if I go back to it in an enticing new CD package I might get unexpectedly excited. Like I say, I don't want to spoil anybody's fun!
-
Maybe just a straight RVG of Song of Singing would hit the mark better for more people? Mind you I don't want to spoil anybody's fun.
-
If you've never heard the Circulus and Circling In material don't get too excited. By the way some of it was on CD as Early Corea or something like that (IIRC it contained much but not all of Circling In).

This is a great list! -
do you post reviews on Mosaic's site?
David Ayers replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So that's YOU! Keep your opinions about Ron McMaster to yourself please - it's like having to listen to church bells five metres from my head at 3 a.m. every morning. Get over it or see a shrink! And BTW you are the ONLY one who wanted the four albums with the Greasy Synapse ad-hoc string orchestra included alongside the quintet sides to make the set into a 'complete' 16 disc behemoth... -
The label was bought by Universal. I have only found this discussed in one place: http://www.goodmusic.co.uk/weblog/archives...ings/index.html [uhh - edited to add when I searched on Universal and Sanctuary I found a lot more...]

Happy Birthday jazzshrink and neveronfriday!

Happy Birthday!! -
Chris - you don't mention retailers, distributors, advertisers, editors, engineers, agents, and all of their overheads - premises, support staff and so on. As you know, the musicians are one element in this, and making a recording is only part of their business (unlike the rest of the industry). I have to say, too, that I find a Blue Note reissue at (often) $10 or even a Mosaic at (horrors) $17 per disc to be a petty reasonable proposition.
-
Why do people think that recorded music is overpriced? Really you have to sell huge volumes to really make any money and there are lots of people to be paid (and no, not just musicians). There seems to be an idea around that everyone should work for nothing so that John Doe can realise the customer's dream of getting his CD for $10 (actually since you can often get a CD for $10 I've lost track really of what overpriced actually means). Folks from the States need to come over here to the UK to find out what high priced CDs are really like. And guess what - CD collecting is optional. Isn't the complaint about prices (i.e. about paying people for their work if you buy the things they produce) really just a dressed up version of saying that 'since I can steal it I will never pay more than $0'?
-
Of recent or recent-ish works I would single out Ligeti's Violin Concerto, and also mention Rihm's Time Chants.

OK here are the ones I don't think have had individual US/Euro issues. Mosaics large and small are not taken into account. I might have made some mistakes. We need to start a thread on the CCs that never made it to other reissue. I'll start with Odyssey of Iska. Umm - here's my list of the lot - I posted it here once before so sorry for the repetition. Someone with the time could edit this down to titles never subsequently reissued (or issued only in Japan): First Collector Series Art Blakey Indestructible! There is more Tubbs around these days than anyone can keep up with - an amazing change over the last few years! One which thrills me is Addictive Tendencies on Rare Music, a live double. Evan Parker is quoted in the notes as calling it 'the best Tubby Hayes I have ever heard'. Be that as it may, it is a very exciting one. The sound quality is what it is, as is the overall time. Tubby Hayes (saxes) with Mike Pyne (piano); Ron Mathewson (bass); Tony Levin (drums). CD 1: [1] Walkin' [13:24] [2] Tubby's "A Little Work Out" announcement [00:14] [3] Tubby's "I Have A New Quartet" announcement [2:11] [4] Alone Together [25:53] [5] Tubby's announcement [00:21] TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 41.23 CD 2: [1] Tubby's announcement [00:19] [2] Off The Wagon [20:33] [3] Tubby's announcement [00:12] [4] When My Baby Gets Mad Watch Out [12:30] [5] What Is This Thing Called Love [11:51] TOTAL PLAYING TIME: 44.45

http://www.jazzdisco.org/bethlehem/ The latest and ongoing round of Japanese issues can be viewed here (along with other stuff with VICJ code): http://www.hmv.co.jp/search/index.asp?sort...mp;formattype=1
-
Those Bethlehems are currently undergoing another Japanese reissue, this time as VICJ. Rosolino is VICJ61476. I can't vouch for the music or for the remastering.

Genius (-ish). I'll try it.

Thanks guys. I won't go for Nero as I don't want to pay! I don't burn CDs often so its not really warranted. With WMP you *can't* change the 2 second gap which it automatically sets. With iTunes you *can* change the gap but only for the whole CD, where what I need to do is group certain tracks but not ALL tracks. iTunes can *play* the tracks without a hiccup but can't *burn* them without. When I did it with Burrn same thing - the gap was reduced to nothing but the hiccup still happened. I'll try CD burner and see how I get on - thanks for the tip.

Following up on the topic of customer service... I recently downloaded from Chandos records (a UK classical label). Their customer service in general is famously non-existent, and when I contacted them about my problem they didn't respond, so I thought I'd ask you guys. I downloaded a classical piece in which the movements are in reality played continuously but are sold as separate mp3s (uhhh - I'll never do this again but I didn't *know* they were played continuously...). WMP plays them continuously but with a hiccup, iTunes joins them properly. But neither will transfer them to CD in a properly joined manner. Nor will Burrn. Do you guys know of any free software that will join such (moronically) split files? In general, this incident has left me wondering about customer service in relation to mp3 downloads - the structure of it seems a but too much like 'give us your money and shut the **** up'. Maybe that's just Chandos - in their case a pity as I would have liked to buy more from them and now I can't.
-
I wonder if they will continue to ship the uncorrected edition? I'm holding off on this until I know it is fixed. Perhaps the first person to receive the corrected edition (as opposed to the replacement disk) could let us all know? FWIW, Fiddle Diddle is a vocal, Fiddle Dee Dee is an instrumental. It is also shorter - the discography on the website gives the same track length for both tracks. Call me Sherlock.
-
You're right about the cost - though perhaps it isn't colossal. They will change it though - it is their company ethos and it is implicit in the 'definitive' and 'complete' epithets they constantly use. Your other implicit point - that you don't really need either track - really begs a whole lot of other questions which maybe we shouldn't go into!
