Racist lyrics in Mercer set?
David Ayers replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Berigan set contains a couple of songs which, though intended to be positive about race, are certainly 'racist' in vocabulary and idea. Mosaic DO mention this in the booklet and briefly justify their inclusion, though you have to read the small print to find the mention. Mind you if you pcik up a Collected Poems of T.S. Eliot or e.e. cummings there will be more than a few moments when you look for the disclaimer. Where do these things end? My preferred warning comes on Iggy's 'American Caesar' CD: 'Parental Warning: This is an Iggy Pop Record' That said, Iggy put in a cool appearance at Glastonbury but then gave an interview afterwards in which he was asked what he had been doing in London. In his list he mentioned visiting 'Paki shops' which in England is (now) a taboo expression. The complaints from viewers flooded in. I'm sure Iggy just thought he was being down with the local lingo and actually expressing his commitment to mixing cultures. I still think that Iggy must have said and done a LOT more in his life for people to phone in and complain about. There should be a 24 hour hotline! -
"If I Can't Have You" - on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

The original 1970 recording, before either the stage show or the film? I agree - it's a classic. Better without the extra songs added later and Murray Head is an awesome Judas.

Well, I thought I didn't care so very much... but since the Tour was coming to Canterbury and finishing practically on my doorstep how could I resist? We were there at 50m from the finish line watching a blur that subsequently turned out to have been Robbie McEwan staging a remarkable win. These are quiet stages so maybe not too much to quicken the pulses in these first few days... though Cancellara's Stage 3 win was BOSS. It was great to see the whole Tour setup in Canterbury - and the crowds here in Kent were massive. So kudos to us all for turning out! Hope it is back here soon but I won't hold my breath... PS I do a certain amount of cycling myself - but I am a bit off the Tour after all the doping scandals. Maybe I can regain a bit of faith?

Thanks! Uhhh - 'out of stock' - ah OK, I see it is 'forthcoming'. Can't WAIT to see those poems.

uhhhh - where can you actually buy a copy? I couldn't see it on the trunk site...

Quite a LOT of Lee Morgan titles. How about spreading it around a bit more? -

Many BBC Radio 3 programmes are available in streaming format for a week after broadcast. Hopefully this one will be... AS I DIDN'T GO!!! The Tour de France was in Canterbury that day... Good win for Robbie McEwen! We were at 50m [i.e. METRES!] from the finish - it was all a blur! But these things don't come around too often... -
what dvd is this? This one:
-
Nice one! So let's get this straight - we are all calling in to stay at your place NEXT WEEK, right? The floor will be fine - for you - we'll all take the bed.
-
OK now this is going to be a very naive question... These clips are in copyright (for sure) and from an in print DVD (I think). Right? So why is it OK to post links to video material but not to audio? Am I missing something? Is video fair game but audio not?

LF: Miles Plugged Nickel box
David Ayers replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
The Mosaic LPs were the ones to go for. Sound quite a bit sharper than the CDs, great box though the CD set is. Don't much like the packaging with the CDs either ! Those LPs are a different matter altogether. They really breathe. -
Tom - I really wish you well - its a sickener. It will be hard turning your efforts from working to looking for work. You have a great employment record for 19 years and it counts for a lot when you are looking for another job. I hope you find something soon. Are there employment agencies you can approach or any kind of advice centre? Has your current employer offered you any help? Over here in UK these would be the first routes, once you have got over the shock. Good luck man.

THANKS JIM!!!! And a big WELCOME BACK to everyone!

In what sense is thirty year old music 'contemporary'???? Don't get me wrong though: I TOTALLY get it. I am READY! -
All the usual faults, writ large. Snap it up. What? What did I say?

Lou Donaldson's best Cadet albums
David Ayers replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Re-issues
A lot of recordings are licensed by majors to other labels. It is common. For example, Brilliant Classics do lots of stuff from EMI and Universal, as well as others such as Denon, Chandos, etc. Their jazz range includes Savoy, licensed for the world excluding USA and Japan. You can be certain that other labels have similar licenses excluding the USA. Lots of reissues are made in Europe outwith the 50 year rule (and even these of course have to pay composer royalties which in most cases are the ONLY royalties that are payable). You can be certain that outfits like EMI and Universal are in a position to protect their copyrights. For example, in the UK the Lonehill, Definitive (etc) stuff is distributed by Discovery Records, who would be a sitting duck if they were violating copyrights. -
I hear that etherbored is now suing Mosaic for 'accidentally' sending him two copies of the Max Roach set. Damages are hard to quantify, but if he wins he will basically own the whole of recorded jazz history and an inalienable copyright in all known chord changes. Inspired by etherbored, I am thinking of suing the earth for problems caused by gravity when I dropped a penny down a drain.

I don't know Basic Blythe. Lennox Avenue is I think a little over-rated. I do really like the tuba band which plays on Light Blue and others.
