  1. The Bud Powell Verve box doesn't usually run any more expensive than it did on list, nothing like the Bill Evans. It's usually under $50 on Amazon.
  2. Looks like the two excised tracks, "How Deep is the Ocean" and "Time on My Hands", are the ones not penned by Tristano or Marsh, so I guess it's for cohesion? This is a dumb reason. This has been done before with hatOLOGY when multiple albums were condensed into one (Bennik/Doran/Anderson) or masters were damaged (Steve Lacy's Cliches).
  3. Finally an update: Some new Art series, a Samuel Blaser, and a reissue of the Braxton Warne Marsh album with less tracks than the original. I was waiting for the latter, but I'll certainly skip it now and shell out thrice as much for the first edition ...

  5. I like Time Further Out best as well. I spin it more than Time Out itself.
  6. I have been spinning a bit of Kirk lately-- the early albums, I havent dug too deep into the post- Rahsaan era yet-- and I noticed we just marked the 35th anniversary of RRK's passing on December 5, 1977. Props to him. I get so much out of We Free Kings, Domino, and RR&P (especially) though there's something worthwhile in everything he did.
  7. It's good. Modern clarinet in the 50s is in pretty short supply, so I'll take it.
  8. Wow, I finally understand what people mean re: vertical/horizontal. Thanks! MG, I grabbed that Charles Davis LP recently. Love it.
  9. My favorite Brubeck, and an all-time favorite, period. I really like Thom Jurek's review over at AMG.
  10. Yes Jim. One of the humblest, most even personas in jazz. I for one love his music, so consistent is it. I look forward to listening for the rest of my days, so thanks Dave.
  11. Yes - I've got that issue, and it also showed up on Joker in Japan. Only the big band piece is from Oslo - everything else was recorded in Rome, May 27, 1968. I don't know whether Kuhn and Mitchell are in the big band, but the actual personnel for the Rome show (taken from Lukas Lindenmaier's Lacy discography) is Lacy, Lincoln, Franco D'Andrea on piano, Giovanni Tommasso on bass, and Roach. Lacy was living in Rome at the time, so it looks like Roach and Lincoln were touring as a duo and hooking up with local rhythm sections. I think Steve sounds pretty good on the two pieces he plays on. Thanks-- makes so much more sense this way.
  12. Max Roach - Sounds As A Roach (Lotus) 1968 Oslo concert with Abbey Lincoln, Red Mitchell, Steve Kuhn, and ... Steve Lacy. Half of it is given over to drum solos and an okay big band piece but the small group cuts that showcase Lacy and Abbey are stellar. Do you know this one, Jeff?
  13. Think Braxton's "post-Parker continuum" ...
  14. Vandermark is hit and miss for me, but I like that he's around and does what he does. I find he needs the right context to thrive I love V5-- he has the support of a great band and the compositions are strong. I also like his duos with Paal Nilssen-Love, the Side A trio on Clean Feed, Sonore, and his Delmark album. The recent solo recital Knife in the Water is also very good DKV doesn't do much for me.
  15. Really need to get the Lanterns album. The Cohran & The Cherry Thing are two of my favorites from this year. There are so many Rogue Arts I want to hear but they're pricey and the hole just keeps getting dug deeper with each new release. I just need to jump in.
  16. Thanks. I'll pitch in for sure. I want him to keep that bass!
  17. Time will tell, I guess. I just thought it would be good to make one thread for NEW releases in this vein to raise awareness and facilitate discussion, rather than start a bunch of individual threads. So far I don't see anyone straying from this and I got a crucial piece of information about a record I've been wondering about. Seems pretty tame to me. Besides, an overabundance of available material is a hallmark of this scene. You pick & choose.
  18. Exactly why I started this thread! I salivated at the thought but had no idea there was a record. Thanks.
  19. Oh heck, another one to get from NoBusiness! That group would be of interest to me. I'm not familiar with the label, though. Is it direct order, or will the usual suspects be dealing it? DG will stock it inconsistently, and JazzLoft should have it. But your best bet is the label, via eBay or their website. That's usually the cheapest option.
  20. Also coming soon on No Business: The Group - Live 1986 w/ Ahmed Abdullah, Marion Brown, Billy Bang, Sirone, Fred Hopkins, Andrew Cyrille.
  21. I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread for the board's contingent of modern/avant/whathaveyou fans to keep up with new releases, which can just kind of come out of nowhere sometimes. So here's the place to post the goings-on over at Clean Feed, Firehouse 12, No Business, Not Two, Cuneiform, Tzadik, Intakt, Leo, Mode, Red Toucan, Delmark, 482, et al. I submit these two killer-looking all-star sessions just out at the world's finest working record label: Eric Revis' Parallax w/ Ken Vandermark, Jason Moran, and Nasheet Waits(!!) http://www.cleanfeed-records.com/disco2US.asp?intID=417 Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten's NY Quartet w/ Joe McPhee, Joe Morris and Nate Wooley. http://www.cleanfeed-records.com/disco2US.asp?intID=414
  22. Not that's isn't a worthwhile set for people who don't have these records, which are wonderful, but it's so pointlessly limited. Why not just all of Columbia's Monk material? It would only run about 15 CDs, less than either of the Brubeck boxes. It's a needless limitation and an incomplete picture.
  23. No. It is the lamest, most pointless box set imaginable. Just Monks Dream, Monk Time, Monk, Straight No Chaser, Underground and Criss Cross.
  24. Showed up today looking just fine. Thanks again!
