  1. With Dolphy, I find myself hindered by some of his early sideman stuff, the LJQ and that Lockjaw date. Don't ever see myself picking any of those up. Now that, mister, is unforgivable! Now will you please put on one of these and stand in the corner until called back! Don't have anything against those sides - haven't heard them. Couldn't justify getting the Mosaic for those sessions. Just remembered I have all but one of Johnny Lytle's albums - 'Does it again' PJ. MH The LD Mosaic doesn't have any of the Clifford Brown stuff-- that's all on Brownie's Complete BN/PJ Recordings box. The Mosaic is just several late 50s hard bop dates with the usual suspects, most of which never showed up on CD outside Japan.
  2. Worth noting here that Leroi Jones initially grouped Nelson in with the New Thing saxophonists, largely on the basis of this stuff. That always made me consider his earlier work in a different light. FWIW, the relevant article contains an addendum that some players' later trajectories didn't quite hew to the avant garde.
  3. I forgot I'm also a little over halfway to having all of John Carter's appearances on record.
  4. Pretty sure Atlantic owned Savoy in the mid-90s.
  5. Any artists you try to get every recorded appearance by, both leader and sideman? For the sake of discussion, let's say there's a 10 record minimum here. The only ones I can say I'm working on are Ran Blake and Jimmy Lyons, and I'd say I'm a little under halfway there with each. I chose these artists for a few reasons: first and foremost I think they're both unique, brilliant, engaging musicians, but I also think they never showed up on a bum record And with about 30 or less appearances, none of which are terribly obscure, I think this is doable. Of course, there are plenty of other artists I seek 90-99% coverage of, but wouldn't turn the earth over for every last thing, a la some of Miles' more obscure bootlegs and 80s records, or some of Ornette's sideman appearances.
  6. 'fraid not, though I will concede that the leader is not American.
  7. Huh. I'll look for it in June 2013. I don't want to be rude, and have the utmost respect for Scott and MC but have they made a promised release date in the last 3 years? Why announce unless you're certain?
  8. FWIW Berkshire Record Oulet has the Shearing, Dizzy, and 13xCD Miles box for dirt cheap. I got the latter, thinking about going back for the other two.
  9. I'd buy a 10 minute Pres CD. That's no impediment!
  10. Good luck, it's a brilliant album. I was awestruck to find it at the tiny jazz section at Half Price Books in Cedar Rapids, IA for $5.99.
  11. Ha! It takes all kinds. I appreciate your musings and am glad you found a couple things you liked!

Amazon has them listed with a Dec. 4 release date and has them priced at $35. But once the listing is activated UK sellers should have them on Marketplace for a bargain.

Like I said, it's all worth it to get those Russells. I can't believe I passed those over time and again for years before it was all of a sudden too late. Now Ezzthetic and The Outer View won't be so lonely on the shelf.
  14. You sold me, too! Any leads on a US distributor? Now that does look interesting. i know Stahl from a couple of dates and Ljungkvist too - both interesting players. I'm intrigued by your Giuffre reference. Off to see what I can find....

Oh, and MG: Hobo Flats came out in the Verve LPR series ca. 2008. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001G9LVDE/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1350834245&sr=8-1&pi=SL75
  16. Post a picture if you can! I love Chris Connor.

Hey, I'll take it. Those George Russells are a huge deal. The OJCs just went for over $30 each on eBay. I passed them over 100 times and was biding my time until Fresh Sound stepped in. Glad I can get them legit. Though, yes if I could bitch about one thing, why not pair Reeds & Deeds with Gifts & Messages, the other RK Mercury small group album that's never been available on a standalone CD in Europe/US (or ever-- not sure about Japan)?
  18. Ditto. I haven't pulled the trigger on any NB titles, but have a roughly $500 wish list ... and that's just the box sets and a few LPs.
  19. Wow, frankly I didn't know he was so old. But he was a unique voice and left around a lot of challenging music to unlock, which is saying something.
  20. Agreed. This is a really good one.
  21. God, so sad. He was incredible. I'm glad he got to play so much these last couple years since his illness. I will blast Godspelized to the rafters today.
  22. Hey, I love bass solos, most certainly including Paul Chambers' arcos. I don't get the hate I just think the instrument is interesting and really rewards "microlistening". So I listen to a fair bit of solo bass recordings by Holland, Guy, Kowald, Haker-Flaten, Dresser, Phillips, et al.
  23. I enjoy the whole Froberg empire.
