Charlie Christian, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk et al - Jazz Immortals (Everest) One of four (!) packagings of this material by Everest. Sturdy, worn jacket and thick, pristine vinyl. Sounds pretty good, probably better than the OJC CD. My copy obviously doesn't have the orange edge from this reissue but it's the only picture of this cover I could find. I see they added the O to Thelonius there.

From what I see this set moved very quickly; from all I know of Michael, Scott, et al's practices this is not normally how they do business-- look at the Hawkins set, for which they scoured the globe. It seems to me that Sue came to them with a bundle of material and they ran with it since the set is obviously such a winner and would yield big sales in any form, a stream of revenue they could probably do with sooner rather than later. I'm glad they got it sorted out, though.

This is the Universal Euro retail edition. Totally the same as the regular version except there is a Universal catalogue # on the spine, not a Mosaic one and there is no handwritten number on the booklet. There was not an LP version. Great music, great price-- only $17 more than from the company itself when it was in print. Someone should nab this pronto.

I can agree with that. But as far as MOR goes it doesn't get much better.

To each their own! But I dunno if I really buy the non-conformity angle; I sure don't see Mulligan selling that. The 50s were chock full of reliable mainstream composers and arrangers, and I think Gerry's one of the very best. He's not George Russell, but he was never trying to be. As far as his playing, I can't speak to his ideas but I know I could just listen to him go forever.

Kind of surprised this stuff hasn't found its way to CD in Europe. It's not been reissued in any other form?

John Tchicai - Solo (FMP) This is probably the most I've ever spent on one record, though to seasoned collectors the figure is a pittance ($30). I saw this at the Destination:Out FMP download store and was enticed. When I caught one on EBay I couldn't resist, and I'm sure glad I didn't! Love Tchcai, and he's in stunning form here. I may never get a chance to own more FMP vinyl; the CDs are hard enough to come by, so I'll cherish this one.

I read a few months back that a DVD is on the way, same as The Connection. Do you know this for sure?

Edmond Hall - Celestial Express (Blue Note) Wynton Marsalis - J Mood (Columbia) Sometimes Wynton sounds just fine, and this is certainly one of his most organic performances, but I can dig him in machine mode as well. Great band, too.

Do. The best of those Dave Douglas records--Convergence, Five-- are incredible. I haven't even heard of a couple of them so I'm excited.

Funny, that For Alto also came with For Trio and Montreux/Berlin. I'm glad I sold off the Mosaic, I really do prefer the LPs.

I'll stop belaboring the point after this but I get the Cecil LP; it's a one of a kind work of art, take it or leave it and be happy with the other 5 dozen CT albums on the market What I don't get is releasing important historical music that would appeal to a relatively broad base in this fashion. I'm sure it will be a beautiful package and I bet they'll make that money back but they won't accomplish much else than that.

Doubtful, that's just a 1998 repackaging of a 1957 session. Or close. I'll feel good about myself if I got those dates right off the top of my head.
