  1. just found this thread - going to be interesting!! In amor ata (Miles Davis) De Pois Do Amor, O Vazio (Wayne Shorter) Danzon D'Amor (Rex Stewart) Amor, Amor (Duke Ellington) O Amor Em Paz (lots of artists - Clare Fischer/James Moody/Joe Henderson/Duke Pearson/Levitts/Elvin Jones) Next word - how about ORANGE after MAD (has ORANGE been done before?)
  2. Any idea when to expect the final results? I've just sent Jim an email regarding this thread - hopefully he'll respond
  3. Just ordered Bill Barron live (x2), Kenny Dorham Double, Billy Harper live (x3), Jackie Maclean live (Dr Jackle), Tete Monteliou ("I Wanna Talk About You" with Hank Mobley on one title), Baker/Bley (Diane) & Parlan (Blue Parlan) I've read reviews of the other live Maclean CD from the same session (Baltimore 66) & the sound quality is very poor - any other comments from the board
  4. Probably the best person to answer this would be Jim Harrod - He's in the process of writing a book on the PJ label. I've communicated a number of times over the past few years regarding PJ discography details. He does venture onto the board occasionally.
  5. Big fan here!! I think you really need to separate between his solo material & collaborations He's recorded with such a wide range of musicians (not just jazz/imrov) Favourite solo material - Incus recordings -> one of his best are the "incus taps" reel recordings from the early 70's. He released four of these short 10 minute tapes - were custom made as people wanted them & are rare as hens teeth now. The Cortical Foundation released this material on CD in the 90's (now oop) but has done an LP reissue that comes with a CDr of the same material. Any of his Incus or Emanem solo recordings are recommended. Another element of his solo material are the rambling or succinct discourses between & during playing - always puts a smile on my face. Interesting collaborative efforts are LAST WAVE (Arcana - DIW)a trio with Bill Laswell & Tony Williams, GUITAR, DRUMS 'N BASS (Avant) with DJ Ninj. ISKRA 1903 is essential IMHO, especially the 3CD set on Emanem (trio with Paul Rutherford & Barry Guy) as are virtually all of the Company recordings. Duos with Evan Parker - ARCH DUO (Rastascan), LONDON CONCERT (Incus/PSI), TOPOGRAPHY OF THE LUNGS (trio with EP & Han Bennink on Incus/PSI) - even one with Anthony Braxton in 1974 (LONDON CONCERT - Emanem). The larger groups eg Globe Unity Orchestra & London Jazz Composers Orchestra are also highly recommended. He's an aquired taste but well worth the try
  6. make that 4998 - I'd jump at a Bill Barron box (Select or a "Big" one) love his sound Send Cuscuna an email; he'll respond. I'm afraid one of the bigger issues is not how important the artist is, but how to organize and handle the legal manipulations of cross-label material. I didn't have much luck with a Joe Harriot Box suggestion (last year) - never got a reply back from Michael
  7. bugs me too similarly for import CD's - have a good selection of OJC's (plus other labels) that can only be shipped within the states - does anyone know why this is so? I used to be able to buy these up until a couple of years ago
  8. my copy has the 13th track; it's also listed in the liner notes
  9. Wow!! that was fast order I placed (7CD) on Jan 11 arrived here in Australia on the 18th Even threw in an extra "freebie" CD (or was it an error?) Appears to be a very "personal" service
  10. I agree Flurin I have the JSP Vol. 1 set & am very happy with it (wonder if a Vol. 2 will emerge) Kicking myself for not getting the Mosaic set - it was still available when I first started purchasing Mosaics in the early 90's
  11. Noal Yep, I know Used it extensively while I was reading the book - saw it change when you added the new Uptown CD
  12. Thanks for the good detective work Appreciate your effort Finally cleared up the drummer confusion from the Aug 55 sessions ie Bruz Freeman vs Larance Marable Recently read your co-authored Gigi Gryce tome & thoroughly enjoyed it Should be reprinted
  13. What sound problems - must have missed this Can you give any specifics - what discs etc The discs for Ming, Hope Scope and New Life are- on my copy at least- in mono. It appears that one channel (either the left or right) has been folded out onto both channels. In other words we're only hearing half the stereo image. As was pointed out elsewhere, Craig Harris' trombone solo on the final track of New Life sounds like someone playing in the hall outside the studio. Just checked my box - hadn't listened to it yet as only recently received it looks like I've got a dud one too I can also confirm that all 3 CD's Ming, Hope Scope & New Life are in mono (others are OK) - opened all of the tracks from each CD in audacity & was able to observe the wave forms Compared the Craig Harris trombone solo (Blues In The Pocket) from the boxed set & to an original CD that I still have (hadn't offloaded it yet) - what a difference!! time to send an email to Cam Jazz - has anyone actually received a reply from them confirming that they will replace the set?
  14. What sound problems - must have missed this Can you give any specifics - what discs etc
  15. Just placed an order at the french website - Lacy, Reece, Byard, Rivers, Adams & Evan Parker What a great find - direct from the source If you're buying from Australia the "french connection" is preferable to Dusty Groove due to the strong aussie $ (esp re the euro)
  16. I'm in line for the latest Jazz Icons DVD set - belated Xmas present
  17. Count me in - another Herbie Nichols fan (received his Biography, "A Jazzist's Life" for Christmas 2010) There are 7 titles from the March 6, 1952 session - two with Chocolate Williams vocals ("My Lady Gingersnap" & "Good Story Blues") "The Modern Jazz Piano Album" CD (SV 0272) contains 4 titles 'S Wonderful (mst) Nichols & Dimes (mst) Who's Blues My Lady Gingersnap (vo) "I Just Love Jazz Piano" CD (SV 93014 - remastered & rereleased in 2001) contains 4 titles - note that the 90's version of this CD (SV 0117) did not contain the alternate take 'S Wonderful (mst) Nichols & Dimes (mst) Who's Blues Nichols & Dimes (alt) "Thelonious Monk/Herbie Nichols" CD - not sure of CD details (released in 1986) but I presume it is the same as the LP (Savoy SJL 1166) - contains all 7 titles 'S Wonderful (mst & alt) Nichols & Dimes (mst & alt) Who's Blues My Lady Gingersnap (vo) Good Story Blues (vo) Have I missed anything?
  18. One of my favourites - love his work. He was creating great material right into his 80's. Only had his recent Mosaic Select Big Band set on the other day.
  19. As NON legit as you can get! Explains their bad covers & lack of detail
  20. The Chris Connor Titles (5 - with trio of Ronnie Ball, Ben Tucker & Dave Bailey) plus some Coleman Hawkins are on a West Wind CD (2025) - At The American Jazz Festival with Chris Connor, Coleman Hawkins -> these Hawkins titles overlap with another WW CD called Body & Soul Is the West Wind label non legit?
  21. The recent TOCJ CD replicates the original FM LP (FM 403) which contained 6 titles - Dorham plays on three of the titles Red Door Lover Man Ismaaa - septet with KD (8:17) It's All Right With Me Autumn Leaves - quartet with KD (2:58) Wee Dot - nonet with KD (13:16) The West Wind Dorham CD/LP (Hot Stuff From Brazil) contains the last 4 titles (omits Red Door & Lover Man) but adds Halley's Comet A Night In Tunisia Don't have this CD so not sure if Dorham plays on these but I presume he does I suppose these are the two titles you are referring to? Japanese reissues don't usually add extra titles - most of the time they stick to the original LP format
  22. Have just received the set & am currently listening - sound quality seems fine though have only listened to a small amount I've just realised that 7 of the 11 titles on Disc 2 are also on the bonus Jazz Icons DVD from series 3 Box Titles 1-3 (Laren, Holland) & 8-11 (Sodra Teatern - interview included)
  23. I had the same impression - thought his packaging had a cigar like odour (not unpleasant) but as has been noted he doesn't smoke. Also love the Japanese packaging ethos - they do it with so much TLC. Will miss you Hiroshi - a lovely person to deal with
  24. Just in case, it doesn't say it on the cover all right, but this is >not< a collection of Bechet's complete Blue Note masters, as it could be expected (I did, anyway). 8 tracks are missing. - 7mar40: "Careless Love" is missing - 10mar45: "Days Beyond Recall" is missing - 12Oct45: Four out of six tracks are missing ("Save It Pretty Mama", "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans", "Shine", "Darktown Strutters' Ball") - 9Dec45: "Quincy Street Stomp (Blame It on the Blues)" is missing - 5Nov51: "There'll Be Some Changes Made" is missing F All of the Blue Note masters are included in the new 14CD Bechet box (no alternates as the title of the box indicates)
  25. Forgot about that one - would have mentioned it on my list but when I bought mine it was minus the box (only got the individual CD's & booklet)
