Flurin I presume that's the Black Lion session (Jan 65) It's been rereleased on the budget Jazz Colours label (subsidiary of Black Lion?) 2CD's worth (approx 20 titles) - had these on my wants list for a while
-
I'm going through a BW phase at present - listening to quite a bit of his material (Emarcy double & lots of his verve material) Any recommendations re this 8CD set covering the mid 60's to the early 70's - european & some NYC material Also, his Circle recordings from the mid 40's are on a Progressive CD -> looks interesting but is it worth getting?

Are there any box bargains currently available?
romualdo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I bought the vinyl when these sets came out in the mid/late 80's (7 double LP's) - fantastic music but the sound wasn't the greatest but hopefully there may have been an improvement on the CDs -
totally agree A small amount of this has been released on the audio CD that comes with Steven Isoardi's text "The Dark Tree - Jazz & The Community Arts in Los Angeles" I presume that's where the material for this CD came from?

Jonathan Are you having second thoughts re the Tapscott reissue or am I misinterpreting "and the Giant Awakens probably" I'm currently reading Horace's biography "Songs Of The Unsung" & he mentions (p 115) an unreleased/unfinished album "We recorded The Giant Is Awakened and part of another album that I never finished" - wonder if those tapes are extant or were they erased Would be nice if they could be added to the original LP if they do still exist

wonderful, wonderful -
Ever see an old LP where the LP itself was sealed?
romualdo replied to BERIGAN's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Ah, thanks! Perhaps Dad is a bit fuzzy on this. Chuck, what if anything protected the old 10 inch LPs? I never see a paper or plastic sleeve in those, or the really old 45's.... 10" LP's in Australia were housed in plastic sleeves (well the few I have are) -
Mythic Sound recordings of Bud Powell
romualdo replied to jmc's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Just thought i'd revive this thread Has anything of significance transpired over the past 5 years regarding the Mythic Sound (plus unreleased) material - was it ever released as a box set (CD or LP) rather than individual CD's or LP's I presume the Paudras recordings are still with the Powell Estate -

Charlie Parker Records 30CD set
romualdo replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Does anyone have the original LP code/number for Vol 26, The Charlie Parker All Stars (Royal Roost material from March 49) It's not included in the Fitzgerald Charlie Parker Records listing & the Lord Discography also omits it (though does include vols 27-29 ie Historical masterpieces 701A, 701B &b 701C -> all Royal Roost) These 4 discs are all in the Savoy Parker Live 4CD set The Parker material is indeed a mixed/confusing bundle -
I have been using CD Japan regularly for the past 2 years (HMV Japan occasionally) Excellent service & shipping costs to Australia are very reasonable Landing the recent "nice price" TOCJ's & Universals (900-1100 yen) for approx Aus 13 dollars

Get the Rare Live Recordings issue (RLR), which is speed-corrected. The Columbia LPs and the other issues I've heard are all mastered at the wrong pitch (too high); after decades of listening to the uncorrected versions, hearing the RLR version was a revelation. The music is just as exciting, but it sounds so much better... mark Does that include the UK 4CD Parker Birdland Box (1995)?

Jonathan thank you so much for the FD's, especially the Tapscott - that was near the top of my RI list - You made my day The Dark Tree & Songs Of The Unsung are in my Jazz reading pile - next on the list once I finish Paudras' book on Powell
-
Good to see this thread reappear - I made a comment on these upcoming Atlantics on March 23 in the Hiroshi releases thread Looking forward to the Slide Hampton, Art Farmer & Milt Jackson (with Lucky Thompson) releases - hopefully the sound will be better than the Collectables versions
-
I'm currently reading "Jazz Masters of the 30's" written by Rex Stewart - quite a good writer I must say so - he documents a lot of his own personal reminiscences going back to the early twentieth century Most of the chapters were lifted from articles he wrote for downbeat during the 60's I've just finished the chapter on Ben Webster & though not directly stated I have the impression that the assertion may be supported here I'd forgotten about this thread & googled gay jazz musicians (based on reading the article) & up it popped near the top of the list

What about Kenny Clarke & His 52nd St Boys - Sept 46 NYC Swing session (Epistrophy, 52nd St Theme, Oop Bop Sh'Bam, Rue Chaptal) - can source these titles from the KC CD, Swing Master Takes 46-50 (Jazz Factory) Billy Eckstine Band - National recordings (BE Savoy set - maybe you have this?) Metronome All Stars 1/49 (Overtime, Victory Ball - various versions) - on the Dizzy Gillespie RCA 3CD set Barry Ulanov All Stars 11/47 - on Parker/Tristano Definitive CD - Complete Recordings (CD sound is markedly improved on the vinyl versions I have); also on the "Bird In Time" ESP box

many thanks Jason I had looked on the HMV site & like CD Japan found a number of these but couldn't create a list Where did you find the search criterion WPCR27?
