  1. Lonesome Sundown was surely the best name for a blues singer. Also, Peanut The Kidnapper.
  2. "Desafinado" and the "Jazz Samba" album by Getz & Byrd were pretty popular in the US and appeared some months or a year before the girl.
  3. Thanks for naming these. "The Fatal Glass of Beer" is certainly a favorite. Another is Laurel & Hardy in "Two Tars," which builds and builds over 20 minutes. They were masters of the slo-o-o-ow reaction, as in the gradual movements on Stan 's face when he realizes he's been hit by a flying tomato. Also, Hal Roach loved anti-anti-anti-climax laughs, as in the gumball scene. The wrecked-car parade and two girls in this movie are priceless. It's on What was the title of the first St. Trinians movie from the 1950s? Margaret Rutherford, Terry-Thomas, among others, unless my memory is completely messed up.
  4. The Roscoes and the Von shoulda been 1-2-3 on that list.
  5. Thanks, Larry. Glad it was recorded, maybe we'll hear it on cd. Your description makes it look like an interesting but outside approach to Nonaah, that is, a spectator's arrangement rather than that of an insider who started with Roscoe's themes. Especially odd since the themes are so provocative on their own. OTOH I wonder if Roscoe might have created more variations of that recorded repeated-phrase movement, perhaps at other places in his Nonaah solos, on other occasions. Also, the perpetual-motion movement of his quartet version (same CD) is analogous. Jason Stein was at his best tonight, very melodic. Especially in the first set his time was slippery like a Tristanoite and later on Keefe Jackson sometimes played long Warne Marshlike phrases. The tunes were mostly Konitz and Monk songs. Marcus Evans was quite a discrete drummer.
  6. What didn't you like, Larry, was it just badly played? Sorry I missed this, some favorite players were there. Some songs by these Chicago composers are so good that they should be standards, like Monk, Golson, Ornette songs. So in principle I favor Vandermark's and Mike Reed's bringing them back. Vandermark won me over at a Lester Bowie memorial concert shortly after Lester died. People like H. Bluiett and Roscoe played there (Roscoe had even recorded some Bowie songs on his own albums) but Vandermark was the only one all evening who thought to actually play one of Lester's songs.
  7. Ah, yes.
  8. A friend loaned me his Kindle Fire while I was in hospital last winter. A great thing, the reading and the music preserved sanity. But I wish Amazon had some real competition and I wish there were standardized readers so we could read and listen to Amazon's and the competitors' e-books, etc. on all readers. Amazon's almost-monopoly is scary, as is their attempt to monopolize the book publishing-selling biz at all levels.
  9. This evening Jerry Sandusky is in his jail cell wondering how, why his great unselfish love for boys has been so terribly misunderstood. Control freaks have fierce capacities for self-delusion, rationalization, and persuading others that they're virtuous. The man-boy-love types, i.e. pederasts, i.e. molesters, are surely among the worst. More subtle and more worrisome are all the other Penn State and State College folks (excepting the victims) who knew about the crimes and said/did nothing. As various posters here have said, they had plausible reasons for not wanting to be heroes. But in this case heroism was exactly what the situation called for. Just because I'm chicken-hearted doesn't excuse me.
  10. How many tenors has he had stolen? When we talked 2 years ago he'd had 2 tenors, his own and a loaner, stolen in the same month, by the same guy on the subway at 14th St. Good to see he's playing more beautiful music. Thanks, Allen. Cataracts, damn. But my eye dr. said all us old folks get them. How about surgery for Kalaparusha?
  11. Can't afford them all but it would be great to have the big-band disk with Charles Tyler.
  12. My enthusiastic review of the CD Simon Nabatov Spinning Songs of Herbie Nichols is now up on the new Point of Departure - http://www.pointofdeparture.org/PoD39/PoD39MoreMoments6.html
  13. This e-mail came today: Hi the community, This is Benjamin Sanz, drummer in Paris. I hope that everybody is doing well. I want to bring your attention on the fact that the great Sunny Murray is not doing well actually. He is actually very depressed and have been put in a psychiatric hospital for one week because his friend for 22 years Isabelle, which is a very nice and a great person, couldn't handle that alone anymore (knowing Sunny and how he is now, it is very understandable). Isabelle told me that this is not a bad, a mean place where they might just "let people die" like we all know that it exists. Sunny really need to rest but we wish him to get out of here te sooner the better. He just need to go out and see people, and hopefully less medication. I know Sunny, what he really need is recognition from the community so he can feel himself better and so he will continue to show us how great he is. Then maybe we'll continue to have him with us, which is such a wonderful thing, i can tell. Let's write him letters and call him just to send him love and help him to get out of here before he will give up and let himself die in this hospital. Also it is good for them at the hospital to see that he is not alone. Because we can't really know yet what is their way of thinking about keeping him/letting him out and his medication. The last time i did see him, one month ago, Sunny could still play and make me laugh so hard that i had abdominal aches until two days after. Please transfer this email to the other people he know, musicians or big fans. Just tell him Benjamin did tell you he was there (He's my friend for 18 years). For the ones who have the contacts of Bill Cosby, Cecil Taylor ( i heard he always ask about Sunny) , Leena Conquest, Bertrand Denzler, William Parker, Henry Grimes and Margareth, people in NY and Philly...Please forward. I just called Archie Shepp and David Murray, they will call him too. Let's call him and write him to send our love, that's all he really needs now. - Phone line direct to his space: (0033) 1 69 89 35 24 - Adress : Sunny Murray, Pavillon 7 Ouvert Hôpital l'EAU VIVE 6 Avenue du Général de Gaulle 91450 Soisy Sur Seine You can also call the personnal working at the Hospital : (0033) 1 69 89 87 00 (so they know he's not alone) then ask "le bureau des infirmières", " le 7 Ouvert" (pronounced like "set oovair" in american) or the Dr Noakovitch, who is his Psychiatrist for informations. I'll talk to him today and we go see Sunny with Bobby Few june 6. We can keep you posted but let's keep him posted! Let's focus for a moment on giving him the recognition and love he deserves to help let him out quick, i'll set him up a gig as soon as it's done. Peace and blessings to you all, be well. Benjamin
  14. Little Walter may never have played jazz but his recordings include lots of second-hand jazz choruses, from McShann, Lunceford, Mills Blue Rhythm Band, etc.
  15. Don't give up hope. While the White Sox are in first for the time being, Adam Dunn hasn't had a hit in days, he's returned to his mid-season form of 2011. Since it's June it's about time for Jake Peavy to make his annual trip to the disabled list.
  16. Actually, I wasn't aiming at you. I'm only in it for the free LPs.
  17. Well, in gospel music there were the Gay Sisters and their brother Pastor Donald Gay. Geraldine Gay, the pianist sister, was called "the Errol Garner of Gospel" by author Anthony Heilbut. Close enough? Pres referred to King Oliver as "a gay old fellow." (BTW Oliver would have been in his 40s when Pres was in his band.)
  18. Great story.
  19. I hope the child get through birth / heroin withdrawal OK, undamaged and that there's a place of love for her or him to go to. Hope the mother got through this OK too. If she wants to try to stay clean, is there an NA group in her area?
  20. Urine-us for Uranus is the most annoying. Somehow late night comedians concluded the correct pronunciation, yer-A-nus, is hilarious and some TV people have been calling it Urine-us ever since.
  21. What's the current state of the book-length biography of Wardell Gray? Is it ongoing or has it been abandoned? Who is doing the work? He should be encouraged.
  22. Five stars for this. She's also one of the few good singers on the Ellington small groups Mosaics.
  23. $16 from Downtown Music Gallery.
