    Bill Lee

Can anyone help me pin down the personnel on Bill Lee's soundtrack to his son Spike's 'joint' She's Gotta Have It? I have the tape somewhere, but I can't find it right now. The musicians are: Virgil Jones Harold Vick Stanley Cowell Bill Lee Joe Chambers with Cedar Walton and Kenny Washington on some tracks (and vocals by Ronnie Dyson). I'm trying to figure out on which tunes Walton and Washington replace Cowell and Chambers. Thanks, Bertrand.
  2. Brownie, Actually, Larry Kart posted the timings above. You may want to locate your copy eventually, however, because I suspect it's very rare! I looked at the timings on the Fantasy CD, and I conclude that the tracks on the Progressive album MUST BE alternates, because the timings are quite different. We have the following: Title Fantasy CD Progressive LP Snakes 5:59 6:40 Minor March 6:49 7:37 J. Mac's Crib 8:44 6:40 Bohemia After Dark 8:26 (w/ The Peck) 9:00 Johnny One Note 8:29 8:00 Sweet Blanche 7:03 7:30 The bonus track on the CD is an alternate of 'Minor March' (not 'Sweet Blanche') clocking in at 7:39, which is the same timing as the 'Minor March' on the progressive LP. So I think Chuck is right: the alternate take on the CD must be the version on the Progressive album. The other tracks on the Progressive are alternates which Fantasy chose not to include. Now the plot thickens, because jazzdisco.org claims the two alternates are on Overseas (J) ULS 1860, not on the Progressive or the Prestige. Does anyone have the Overseas record? BTW, what other titles are on Progressive? This seems to be the first from the catalog number. Bertrand.
  3. Weizy, I suspect NOBODY got Soultrane (or the non-20-bit Lush Life). Bertrand.
  4. They found hours of music but are only putting out one CD? This called for a Mosaic Box! All jokes aside, this is VERY GOOD NEWS. This means Concord is still interested in putting out rare obscurities, not just the big sellers (I doubt Bobo sells a lot). There may be hope yet. A few years back, I was in touch with the Fantasy Archivist Stuart Kremsky concerning Lee Morgan's Take Twelve session. He found at least one more reel, so perhaps there are out-takes from this date. I have lost touch with him because of the Concord Purchase, but perhaps now I will try to revive this. Any way to call Concord other than the (flooded) customer line? Bertrand.
  5. Brownie, Larry, I've always been puzzled about this discographical confusion concerning the Bohemia dates. Keep in mind that jazzdisco.org, although very useful for quick searches, is somewhat unreliable, so you have to take what they say with a big grain of salt. I had also heard that the Progressive album had alternate takes of all tracks, and Brownie seems to be confirming that this is the case. Can you post the timings of the Progressive album? If they are different enough, this will prove this. I have the Prestige album on my iTunes folder, so I can check those timings when I get home. This may mean that I am missing more tunes in my Jackie McLean iTunes playlist! I'm close to being complete. I am missing Art Farmer Live In Tokyo and Mal Waldron's Sems Like Old Times (neither of which have ever been on CD), and a few isolated tracks here and there. Don't know what Wayne is talking about. I may ask him at the Monk competition in September. Bertrand. Bertrand.
  6. I will separate my two replies since there are two completely separate topics going here. To all our European friends, I hope you realize that Wolff's xenophobic comments in no way represent my feelings nor those of most other U.S. Organissimo members (hopefully). As a dual French and American Citizen with many family ties to France, I've poked a fair amount of fun at the expense of both, but I love countries, and I love the fact that I can belong to both. Bertrand.
  7. The 10 tracks can fit on 2 CDs. So, they could make a package like the Monk/Coltrane. However, the Monk/Coltrane had some extra stuff NOT IN THE RIVERSIDE box, so there could be extra Dolphy stuff as well, especially since it's live. My guess is they will find a way to stretch it to 3 CDs. It's definitely long overdue. BTW, does the Monk/Coltrane contain 'Monk's Mood'? Bertrand.
  8. Don't call them - you'll delay someone's order! Bertrand.
  9. The cover on that Wallington sure is corny! Jerry Lloyd's playing on the Hipp album is indeed very weak. I still haven't figured out how much material belongs on the Wallington Bohemia set. In addition to the original LP, there were a couple of bonus tracks, and I believe at least one did not make it to the OJC CD. But some discographies I've seen claim there is at least one alternate for each tune, which would then make it 2-CDs worth of music. Some of the material showed up on the Progressive label instead, but some tracks on there might have duplicated the Prestige album. Anyone ever sort this out? Speaking of 'Snakes', what is Wayne talking about in this interview? http://www.abstractlogix.com/interview_view.php?idno=75 My CD has no vocals on it, and I don't get the joke. Bertrand.
  10. I often go to allmusic.com for this, but it's not always correct. I then post in discography right here on Organissimo to confirm. No matter how rare an LP, SOMEONE on Organissimo has a copy One of my several pet peeves about box sets is that they never give the original track order. It would not take up much space in the booklets. If the record you want is on jazzdiscography.com. they have track listings there. Bertrand.
  11. Jackie McLean is only on one Wallington album, I believe. Bertrand.
  12. Finally got two e-mails today, one from Concord and one from Fed-Ex. It looks like some of you got a 'first' e-mail that I never got. All titles except Soultrane are on their way. Noticed that Worktime has again dropped off their list. What's that all about? Bertrand.
  13. When I click on it, only the subforums appear. I can't see the Larry Young Jazz Festival thread (not that I have any new information). Bertrand.
  14. I ordered on 7/13 (just after midnight) and still no e-mail, nothing. I called last week and they told me it was still being processed in the warehouse. A friend of mine ordered on 7/12 around lunch and got his package yesterday. Bertrand.
  15. Hmmm...There's an 'X' on the Hammond forum and I can't read a topic I began yesterday. I wonder what's going on? Bertrand.
  16. I should have written the 'only missing Coltrane'; that would have been clearer. I think weizy got Lush Life and Soul Trane mixed-up; I could be wrong. Bertrand.
  17. I thought Soultrane was the missing one?
  18. I'll try to call Larry this week. I've just been super busy in the last few months, and I was under the impression that the website would be working by now. It seems like they will need help advertising at this point. I was in touch with him, but haven't heard from him in a while. The line-up was quite amazing - he contacted basically anyone still alive who ever recorded even a note with Larry II. I'll keep you guys posted. Bertrand.
  19. I talked to Larry III a few months ago, and he told me about this upcoming Festival in Newark, NJ. It sounded great! It's supposed to be the second week of August. I haven't had a chance to call him, but since that part of the larryyoungmusic website isn't up yet, I will have to do so. Anyone know anything before I call him up? Thanks, Bertrand.
  20. For anyone who has the two following albums by Bill Laswell: Material - Hallucination Engine Bahia Black - Ritual Beating System Does Wayne Shorter play on any tracks other than the ones he co-authored which are: Black Light (Hallucination Engine) Gwagwa O De (Ritual Beating System) The Seven Powers (Ritual Beating System) Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  21. Jeez, he's a terrible writer. Bertrand.
  22. Don Sickler told me about these and I even saw a snippet of the Blakey in April. Lee is on fire. It's the Moanin' band in Belgium. This footage was though to be lost. They were originally scheduled for August. Bertrand.
  23. Kevin, My deepest condolences to you and your family. Bertrand.
  24. Dewey Redman recorded a CD in 2004 with a University Band in North Carolina. I could probably purchase it through this site for $18: http://www.uncg.edu/mus/Jazz/ Anyone have a line on how to get a cheaper copy? Thanks, Bertrand.
  25. I ordered Wednesday (number 5620), and still no news. I'll call Thursday if there's no e-mail tomorrow. Bertrand.
