Brownie, Thanks for posting the article. I just got back from Shenandoah Park, so I just read it myself. I need to correct something that may have already been confused in some people's minds. I do not work for the Library of Congress; there was a slight misunderstanding. I work as a Mathematician for a government Statistical Agency. I do research (jazz archivist is one way of putting it) at the Library of Congress as a freelancer, mostly for myself (occasionally for others), mostly unpaid. I want to make sure no one there thinks I'm mis-representing myself. Michael Cuscuna really came through with two gorgeous Frank Wolff photos. Kudos to Michael for coming through on such short notice. I will try to see if I can go visit Butch in June. By then, I hope things will have taken a turn for the better. He did tell me a few years back that he had NONE of his records (and no CD player). I will see how he is set up at the hospital. Perhaps he has access to a CD player. We could perhaps all pitch in and get him a few CDs. I will follow up on this in a few weeks. It is not too late for Butch to resurface and thrill us again with his talent (think Henry Grimes - everyone thought he was dead). I have tons of Butch's stuff on my iPod - the guy can really play. Bertrand.

OK - I'll be in Paris next Wednesday. If you want to try to hook up for a gig or something, send me a Private Message with your phone number. I'll send you my number back. I just sent Brownie a PM - I hope you get it. Bertrand.

Thanks. I was hoping there would be some in the books, but I'm still at work. They were concerned about how to get permissions, which is another reason I suggested MC. I'm pretty sure there is a photo in the article in the French Magazine which I have, but that would make permissions harder. This is a fascinating interview, BTW, from when he was with Monk. Butch was started to get into Ornette and co. But then, life took over and Butch left the NYC scene. Let's see how much Sunday's article covers. If I have time one day, I'll post a translation of the French interview. Bertrand.

Forgotten about that post. I see that Mike looked at this with me on his last visit, so the copyright deposits will not clear up anything, in the sense that they do not contradict the LP/CD. There is one more piece of information since that posting. Exactly one week before Jackie passed on, Rene did a tribute in D.C. and played 'Blues Inn' off the copyright deposit I had sent them. I noticed that it was in the same handwriting as a lot of the mid-sixties Blue Note deposits. I had assumed that handwriting was Duke Pearson's (both Jackie and Andrew Hill confirmed that he sent in a lot of the lead sheets for copyright). However, this piece is from 1960 or 1961. I don't think Pearson was A & R man at the time - I think it was Leon Mitchell. Rene said he would ask Jackie, but I'm sure he never had a chance to So there is a rather crucial mystery involved: who wrote out many of the Blue Note copyright deposits? Bertrand. -
The Washington Post will run an article on Butch Warren this Sunday. I spoke to them a couple of months ago and gave them some information. He's gotten into some trouble, I'm afraid. I was waiting until the article was out to mention it here. Anyway, it turns out they cannot find a photo of him. I will look tonight when I get home in the two books of Frank Wolff photos. Also, I told the author to call Michael Cuscuna tomorrow - that's their best bet. Can anyone off-hand point me to any known photos of Butch easy to access, e.g. in a CD reissue? I know there's one on the back of my Fickle Sonance LP, but it's small. I thought I found one on the web, but now I can't find it. Thanks, Bertrand.

The great Dewey Redman turns 75 today! It is a shame he does not get more opportunities to perform and record. I haven't seen him in over two years. I hope I can remedy this soon. Bertrand.

Jackie McLean, who left us on March 31st, would have been 75 today. I have been thinking about him a lot in the last few days, and how much he left us with. Of course, there are all the great records, but his legacy is passed on through all of the musicians he formed over the last 30+ years. Jackie truly left this world a better place. He will never be forgotten. Bertrand.

Frank, Any chance you'll hit the D.C. area? Bertrand.

My avatar represents Wayne Shorter, a jazz saxophonist and composer whose music I enjoy. Bertrand.

Fortunately, I'll be at the beach during that time. I'll make sure to have a thought for you, slaving away upgrading the board while I'm basking in the sun. Too bad the weather calls for severe afternoon thunderstorms Bertrand.

Mr. Jazz, The John Hicks tribute will be at Twins lounge on Colorado Avenue, not the U street location. Bertrand.

The only one who brought anything up on this particular forum was youmustbe, who was actually involved in some inside joke only he and one other board member could understand. I don't recall anyone else 'buying' this story youmustbe was trying to peddle. Apparently, at least one other person did. The whole thread was pathetic, I tried to steer it back on course, but it was hopeless. I don't know what was discussed elsewhere, and do not care to find out. Valerie, In essence, some of us had strong reservations about this book, mostly due to its sloppy scholarship. Mike Fitzgerald in particular brought up some incredibly amateurish mistakes. Since then, I have found out some more unsettling things, in particular one musician has stated that he was completely misquoted and the story he told completely mangled. However, I do agree that M.M. was able to capture a lot of Wayne's personality (I know him a lot less well than you, of course) but I'm not convinced that was so hard to accomplish: he did make himself available to her extensively, and I suspect that he was made all the more comfortable by the fact that she was NOT a serious jazz scholar with impressive credentials. Several people close to Wayne have expressed the same feeling that this book captured him very well, and I have to give her credit for that. But a serious, in-depth biography of Wayne, with a detailed analysis of just why he is so important to 20th century American music, has yet to be written. There are people out there who could do it, but it is a monumental undertaking and I could see why no one has tackled it yet. Bertrand. -
Twins jazz in D.C. (where Hicks was supposed to play this week-end) now has Ronnie Mathews doing a tribute to John instead. I would normally try to go, but I am getting up early the next day to go to the beach. John had a big fanbase here, and I know it will be a nice tribute. I'll play it by ear; maybe I'll go for a set or something. I do like Mathews, and I haven't seen him in eons. Bertrand.

The discography at georgebraith.com gets the personnel mixed-up between Braith's two Prestige records, Laughing Soul and Musart. My understanding is neither Patton nor Green are on Musart, correct? Bertrand.

McCoy will also be at University of Maryland in October with a septet (!) playing a tribute to Impulse! They didn't mention this compilation, but that does tie in nicely. I know some of the other cats were Moffett, Gravatt and Dave Liebman. They specifically listed some tunes to be played: Alfie, excerpts from Black Saint And Sinner Lady, some of Love Supreme and some other 'Trane. If they don't play 'Alfie' and 'Black Saint', I will ask for a refund. Bertrand.

I agree with Mike, his playing is very interesting, especially on Got A Good Thing Goin', one of my favorite organ records of all time. This is the first I've heard of him being from D.C. I've certainly never seen him listed anywhere. I will ask Buck next time I see him, and some of the other older cats. Levy still plays in Baltimore frequently, but I've never caught any of his gigs. If I ever do, I will ask him as well. Bertrand.

That's my favorite John Hicks solo. It's really a beautiful piece. Bertrand.

Just saw him with Grachan Moncur on 4/8, and in D.C. back in January. He was scheduled to play in D.C. this week-end. This is really sad news. David Weiss and I were talking about how great he played at the Moncur gig - we agreed that John had really been playing especially well recently. My condolences to his family. Bertrand.

I'm pretty sure a friend of mine has a copy of this, so I think it still exists. It probably was not reissued because there's nowhere really to fit in these few tracks. Bertrand.

MG, Claude's discographies are not available on-line - contact him to see how to get a copy. I sent him a PM - let's see what his take is on this. I do have both the Collectables CD and a burn of the LP with the 'unedited' version. It's when I saw the differences in the timings that I knew something was up. I like the stereo vs. mono theory. I was going to do a thorough compare, but immediately caught the differences in the head so stopped there. It was 2 AM I will try to compare in the next few days. I'm intrigued by the alternate take idea. I was wondering how to treat this problem on my iPod (remember my Green/Patton playlist?). I was going to REPLACE the burn with the CD. Now I will do that, but keep the vinyl 'Yodel' and call it an alternate! Harold, I'm wondering if they really played the head once and it was repeated in the mono by splicing. The two run-throughs sound very similar. What do you think? You can get the CD from www.oldies.com for under $10 with shipping. I tossed in the Vitous CD for $4 extra. Good deal. Maybe we really need to put in a call to a certain golf course manager Bertrand. -

Harold and MG, What are the catalog numbers on your LPs? My theory is that Harold has an earlier version with a head played twice. MG has a reissue where the head was edited, perhaps because the tape went bad or something? Or maybe the first 30 seconds were lost in the great Atlantic warehouse fire Our friend Claude Schlouch may have some explanation in his GG discography. Forgetting any CD reissues, we are confronted with the following fact: some pressings of the vinyl are edited, some not. Perhaps we need to call a certain golf course in Jersey Bertrand. -
