  1. Iron City was also between the two contracts. We discussed a while back (probably on the legendary Patton vs. Young thread) that Iron City was probably recorded in 1965, not 1967. There were also those unissued Verve sessions, so in fact Grant kept busy between the two contracts. Bertrand.
  2. What state was Donald Regan governor of? Bertrand.
  3. Happy birthday, Stefan! I hope you didn't go to work today. Bertrand.
  4. What's 'Consecutive Seconds'? Bertrand.
  5. Does he really play every known Monk tune, including 'Two Timer', 'A Merrier Christmas' and "Harlem Is Awful Messy'? Bertrand.
  6. Doesn't this belong in the political forum

    Clifford Brown

The Washington Post surprisingly had an article on Brownie in today's style section. I can't link to it, but it was pretty good. Bertrand. Correction: When I started typing this, Garth's message was not posted yet. By the time my message posted, his showed up. So you can link to the Washington Post article now.
  8. 'Footprints' is one of my favorite Hancock compositions. Bertrand.
  9. It looks like the Mickey Roker gig is not happening - it's Russell Malone instead. Bertrand.
  10. I prefer the version on Lighthouse - Mickey Roker lays down a very cool rhythm, and somewhere in the middle they launch into Freddie Hubbard's 'Clarence's Place' (how did that happen?). The original is OK, but defiitely not one of Lee's most memorable tunes. His brother Jimmy told me that Lee wrote it in about 10 minutes! Speaking of Mickey Roker, I just found out he will be at the Smithsonian Jazz Cafe tonight. I hope to make it. Bertrand.
  11. Upping this for my own convenience. Bertrand.
  12. What incorrect statement does he make? Bertrand.
  13. John Eaton 1956 session with Wayne Shorter

    Woody Shaw

Oops - three of the eight tracks tracks also appeared on the Rosewood reissue. So far, Rosewood and these three tracks, plus the Stepping Stones CD (with bonus cuts, but missing a track) are the only CD reissues of the Columbia material. So what's left? United Woody III (except for 'Escape Velocity' which is on the Stepping Stones CD) 5 tracks from Time Is Right One deleted track from Stepping Stones This material could fit on a two-CD set. Or, they could reissue United and Woody III as two separate CDs, with some bonus tracks on each (5 from Time Is Right, and one from Stepping Stones). It would have made more sense the keep 'Escape Velocity' on Woody III and leave Stepping Stones intact, but what the fuck do I know. Bertrand.

    Woody Shaw

It was in the Mosaic box, but that's the only CD version I'm aware of. Some of the tracks are very good, some not. Bertrand.
  16. Captain Beefheart may not be the single most reliable historian on the planet Bertrand.
  17. I only need the DVD - maybe it will be available separately as well (yeah right)? There were 15 albums (not counting Tokyo) - or are they leaving out This Is This, where Wayne plays on only 3 tracks? Bertrand.

    Mingus

Also, Mingus explains in the film that he likes Jutta Hipp better than Toshiko Akiyoshi! Bertrand.
  19. When did they say the D.C. gig is? I don't see it on the tour list yet. I was in Paris when they played and knew nothing about it. I was at a Jam Session that night Bertrand.
  20. According to Jeff Tamarkin's Jefferson Airplace bio, Kaukonen and Pastorius played together for a while in the mid-80s. At some point, Rashied Ali was on drums. Anyone know anything more about this? I wonder what material they played. Bertrand.
  21. Does the DVD include the complete Mingus concert (4 tracks - about 55 minutes or so)? Thanks, Bertrand.
  22. 'Don't Blame Me' is on Capuchin Swing, but it's a trio track (no Jackie). Bertrand.
  23. Jackie did record 'Bags' Groove' on Hat Trick, but it's definitely not a signature tune. Grachan Moncur opened his set at the Iridium the day after Jackie's funeral with a funky, groove-oriented version of 'Blue Rondo' that sounded nothing like the version on One Step Beyond. Now that was a tribute to Jackie. Bertrand.
  24. I'd rather be an organist without a guitar than a guitarist without an organ. Bertrand.
  25. 'Finding a cheap flight to Paris is becoming more urgent'. Someone told me about an airline called Air Ryan (?), round trip London Paris for 30 euros or so. Let me know if you can confirm this. Bertrand.
