I'm floored. In the last 10 years, I've come across a dozen or so people who were working on Morgan bios, including Jeff McMillan (who did his Masters' at Rutgers on Lee, and who I was told is writing his own book) and a friend who occasionally posts here. Yet I've never heard of this guy. I wonder if he has any knowledge of the 60+ unrecorded tunes I found 13 years ago at the Library of Congress. This may or may not be critical information for a Morgan bio (I would lean towards thinking it is), but it deserves at least a mention. But then, Michelle Mercer thought an inventory of Wayne Shorter compositions (including unrecorded copyrights) was not useful for her book, so what the hell do I know. I would certainly be willing to share what I have uncovered with this guy, but he has to find me first I'm tired of talking to people who never follow through. Bertrand.

OK, I picked up the Oliphant two-fer cheap from oldies.com: $6 + Vitous for $4 (with a missing tune, I know, but only 4 bucks) and $4 shipping - pretty good deal. Here's a weird question, though: on the burn I have of Grass Is Greener, 'The Yodel' is 7:08 (although it says 6:35 on the cover and on the cover reproduced in a post earlier in this thread). On the Collectables CD, the tune is indeed 6:35. I compared them: on my burn, the opening head is played twice, whereas it is only played once on the CD. This adds the missing 30 seconds. Hence, I would assume it was an (unmentioned) edit on the CD BUT, why does the record jacket say the tune is 6:35? Could some pressings of the vinyl have been edited, and others not? For those of you with the vinyl, or the Japanese pressing, how long is 'The Yodel' on your copy? Do they play the opening head once or twice? Very curious. I wonnder if there was an imperceptible hiccup when my friend burned the CD for me which resulted in the head being played twice. Stranger things have happened. Bertrand.

Kyle Eagle, a young man I met last month at the Grachan Moncur III gig at the Iridium and who is working with Grachan (bookings, website etc.) proposed that I submit some question for a Q & A for Grachan Moncur to be posted on his site (www.grachanmoncur.com). I thought that, rather than just have me ask some questions, I would pool my erudite friends at organissimo and put together a list of questions from everyone (giving credit, of course). So, go ahead and start thinking of questions for Grachan. I'll let this list mount up while I'm on vacation, and put together the final list when I come back (6/10), unless Kyle says he needs it earlier. Some ideas I had: 1) Let's get the whole (accurate) story about Webster Young's role involvement with the Evolution album 2) What new compositions is he working on? (his keyboard player said he had some great new pieces) 3) Did he write any music for the play Blues For Mr. Charlie (that he appeared in) which we might not have heard? Oh OK, I don't have that one. In case you guys are wondering why I'm asking all this, I just finished putting together a playlist on my iPod of the complete Grant Green/John Patton collaboration. 94 tunes in all! I've been digging it this morning. It's amazing how you discover these hidden gems that you missed the first time around. One example is Don Wilkerson's 'Movin' Out' from Shoutin'! This is a great little composition, in a somewhat whimsical vein. It fits perfectly with this screenplay I've been mentally writing, so much that I'm thinking the whole soundtrack should be Green/Patton. I wish I had connections in the movie biz Next time I see Wayne Shorter (probably in September at the Monk competition), I am tempted to chastise him for his off-hand dismissal of Grant Green in Michelle Mercer's book ('grits and gravy' or something like that - I'll look it up at home). I'm sure he's not listened to that much. I'm tempted to buy him a copy of Got A Good Thing Goin' to set him straight. Someone please talk me out of this before I make a fool of myself! Bertrand.

So I guess Belden was confused. I'll assume that's the case, unless someone else comes in with an explanation. I agree it's hardly an intricate composition. Another question: when Lou Donaldson's Man With A Horn came out, someone pointed out that 'The Hipty Hop' was the same as another tune. Does anyone remember which? Thanks, Bertrand.

In his liner notes to Grant Green's First Session CD, Bob Belden seems to imply that the track entitled 'Grant's First Stand' is redone (presumably under another title) on what was Grant's first official album as a leader, also entitled Grant's First Stand. None of the three Green originals on the latter album has that title, and none match the song with that title from the First Session album. So what was Belden referring to? Is this a piece Grant recorded on another album, and he just got mixed up? Thanks, Bertrand.
