Jimmy McGriff: Live at Blues Alley, Washington DC
bertrand replied to HWright's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Blues Alley never bothers with personnel. Even if I called them between sets, they wouldn't know. I'll only consider it if the personnel is worth it. Bertrand. -
I also love this record. As it so happens, it's part of the $9.99 Impulse sale until Monday. I only have the old CD case version. Although I usually don't do upgrades, I think I will for this one and Alfie (one of my favorites). We'll see what other Impulses are out there... Bertrand.

Thanks, Ronald, no rush on this. I susepct the LP has the exact same info as the tape, so it's more a question of whether you interpret it the same way I did. Bertrand.

Who else is in the band? Bertrand. -
I found my tape in between, but the info is confusing - it seems to claim that both Walton and Cowell play on some tracks. I think I have concluded the following: It's Chambers and Cowell on all tracks except the various takes of 'Nola'. On the various takes of 'Nola' (one of which is a piano solo), it's Walton and Kenny Washington. Does your LP seem to imply this as well? Thanks, Bertrand.

Finally got my CDs - everything but Soultrane. I would consider making another order, but my gut instinct is that there will be a second batch so I will wait until then. Bertrand.

There is a package waiting for me at home that came today. My workday is done! Bertrand.

Is Hill leading the octet as well? Bertrand.

I had heard he had heart surgery. I wish him the best in his recovery. I hope to see him with the aforementioned septet at the University of Maryland in the fall. Bertrand.

I may try to go. Bertrand.

I just spoke to Larry III. The festival is going to happen, but at a date still to be determined. The website now has some information. The following artists have committed to appear: George Benson trio with Melvin davis Lenny White Joe Chambers Houston Person James 'Blood' Ulmer Dave Holland Herbert Morgan Bobby Hutcherson McCoy Tyner/Stanley Clarke/Billy Cobham Nathan Davis Onaje Allen Gumbs Dave Blocker (a vocalist who sang in a group with Larry called The Challengers) More info as it becomes available. Bertrand.

Buck will be at Blues Alley soon. I'll try to see if he's got the organ that night. I need this CD! Bertrand.

Thanks for checking, Brownie. Yes, I had an opportunity recently to pass along a bunch of questions to Wayne about his compositions for a project I am working on (more on this later - it should be interesting if it comes to fruition). He was categorical that 'Fat Lady' was not his, but he did not state who did compose it. There's no reason to think it is not Timmons. Bertrand.

I left a voice mail last night. I'll post back with updates. Bertrand.

Two good gigs coming up in D.C. at the U street Twins 8/18 and 8/19: Oliver Lake I saw him a year or so ago. It was an 80% Dolphy program, played beautifully - if Janelle Gill is on piano again, we're in for a real treat. 8/25 and 8/26: Larry Willis Trio He often uses a drummer I don't care for, but here the excellent Steve Williams (formerly with Shirley Horn) is scheduled. Steve Novosel is on bass (formerly with Tolliver). Stefan and I just saw Steve on Friday - he's amazing. Let me know if you're tempted. Barring unforeseen circumstances, I hope to be at both. Bertrand.

Yes, it's time I finally put my Lee Morgan/Wayne Shorter Mosaic into my iTunes folder. In particular, this will allow me to have an almost complete 'Wayne Shorter' compositions playlist - I'll only be missing the two tracks he co-wrote on the Laswell album (see other thread - I might have to buy this one), a new piece called 'Ballroom In The Sky' which will be on the Santana/Shorter DVD coming out soon (although I think it's the same as the piece he's been tacking onto 'Footprints') and the bonus track from the Japanese Sound Barrier CD (grrr...). 19 of the tracks in the Mosaic set are his, including two he has yet to record himself. I'm pretty sure the track listings below are correct. If anyone who has the vinyl can confirm, I would appreciate it. I plan to toss the alternates at the end where they belong. Some tidbits which I may or may not have already mentioned on the board: 1) On the Mosaic, the songs 'Blues A La Carte' and 'Harry's Last Stand' are flipped. My listing below refers to the correct song titles. 2) "Off Spring' is by Clifford Jordan, not Milt Jackson. Thanks to a tip from our friend Vincent, I confirmed this with the copyrights (and later with a discography Clifford did himself which his widow sent to me). 3) There was confusion in earlier issues, but 'Fat Lady' is NOT by Wayne Shorter. I got this information from Wayne himself. Thanks, Bertrand. The Young Lions Seeds Of Sin - Scourin' - Fat Lady - Peaches And Cream - That's Right Here's Lee Morgan Terrible T - Mogie - I'm A Fool To Want You - Running Brook - Off Spring - Bess Expoobident Expoobident - Easy Living - Triple Track - Fire - Just In Time - The Hearing - Lost And Found Introducing Wayne Shorter Blues A La Carte - Harry's Last Stand - Down In The Depths - Pug Nose - Black Diamond - Mack The Knife Second Genesis The Ruby And The Pearl - Pay As You Go - Second Genesis - Mr. Chairman - Tenderfoot - The Albatross - Getting To Know You - I Didn't Know What Time It Was Wayning Moments Black Orpheus - Devil's Island - Moon of Manakoora - Dead End - Wayning Moments - Powder Keg - All Or Nothing At All - Callaway Went That-A-Way

Buck is a wonderful musician, I have had the pleasure of seeing a number of times and he never disappoints. Jerry Jones told me about this record, Buck's first with an organist (who his regular pianist, BTW). Paul Pieper is also a fabulous player (just missed him Thursday). I will get this ASAP. I've got to hear 'Flamenco Sketches' with organ! Bertrand.

Mel Gibson drinks truth juice

I always hated his fucking guts. This just confirms my instincts. Bertrand. -
Yes, Barak, We are all going to be thinking of you and hope you stay safe during this mobilization. Bertrand.

Can anyone help me pin down the personnel on Bill Lee's soundtrack to his son Spike's 'joint' She's Gotta Have It? I have the tape somewhere, but I can't find it right now. The musicians are: Virgil Jones Harold Vick Stanley Cowell Bill Lee Joe Chambers with Cedar Walton and Kenny Washington on some tracks (and vocals by Ronnie Dyson). I'm trying to figure out on which tunes Walton and Washington replace Cowell and Chambers. Thanks, Bertrand.

Brownie, Actually, Larry Kart posted the timings above. You may want to locate your copy eventually, however, because I suspect it's very rare! I looked at the timings on the Fantasy CD, and I conclude that the tracks on the Progressive album MUST BE alternates, because the timings are quite different. We have the following: Title Fantasy CD Progressive LP Snakes 5:59 6:40 Minor March 6:49 7:37 J. Mac's Crib 8:44 6:40 Bohemia After Dark 8:26 (w/ The Peck) 9:00 Johnny One Note 8:29 8:00 Sweet Blanche 7:03 7:30 The bonus track on the CD is an alternate of 'Minor March' (not 'Sweet Blanche') clocking in at 7:39, which is the same timing as the 'Minor March' on the progressive LP. So I think Chuck is right: the alternate take on the CD must be the version on the Progressive album. The other tracks on the Progressive are alternates which Fantasy chose not to include. Now the plot thickens, because jazzdisco.org claims the two alternates are on Overseas (J) ULS 1860, not on the Progressive or the Prestige. Does anyone have the Overseas record? BTW, what other titles are on Progressive? This seems to be the first from the catalog number. Bertrand.

Weizy, I suspect NOBODY got Soultrane (or the non-20-bit Lush Life). Bertrand.

They found hours of music but are only putting out one CD? This called for a Mosaic Box! All jokes aside, this is VERY GOOD NEWS. This means Concord is still interested in putting out rare obscurities, not just the big sellers (I doubt Bobo sells a lot). There may be hope yet. A few years back, I was in touch with the Fantasy Archivist Stuart Kremsky concerning Lee Morgan's Take Twelve session. He found at least one more reel, so perhaps there are out-takes from this date. I have lost touch with him because of the Concord Purchase, but perhaps now I will try to revive this. Any way to call Concord other than the (flooded) customer line? Bertrand.

Brownie, Larry, I've always been puzzled about this discographical confusion concerning the Bohemia dates. Keep in mind that jazzdisco.org, although very useful for quick searches, is somewhat unreliable, so you have to take what they say with a big grain of salt. I had also heard that the Progressive album had alternate takes of all tracks, and Brownie seems to be confirming that this is the case. Can you post the timings of the Progressive album? If they are different enough, this will prove this. I have the Prestige album on my iTunes folder, so I can check those timings when I get home. This may mean that I am missing more tunes in my Jackie McLean iTunes playlist! I'm close to being complete. I am missing Art Farmer Live In Tokyo and Mal Waldron's Sems Like Old Times (neither of which have ever been on CD), and a few isolated tracks here and there. Don't know what Wayne is talking about. I may ask him at the Monk competition in September. Bertrand. Bertrand.
