Haven't had the time to do a thorough search, but maybe someone already has the answer. Newport Rebels has just been reissued. The tracks are: Mysterious Blues Cliff Walk Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams 'tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do Me And You Do these appear on any other Candid CDs/LPs? There's a 'Bizness' on Candid Dolphy, but Mike's Abbey Lincoln discography seems to suggest it's a different take. I'm pretty sure 1 and 3 are on other Mingus Candid CDs, but again, perhaps different takes. How about 2 and 5? Thanks, Bertrand.

RDK, Elsewhere you asked about gigs in DC. I suggested a possible gig on 10/6. Let me know if you're interested. Bertrand.

Now that the Monk Trane CD is out, what ya think?
bertrand replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
Some record label took an old record of 'Trane and an old record of Monk, and edited them together, like those Nathalie Cole/Nat King Cole and Kenny G/Louis Armstrong duet things. Then they dubbed in some applause to make it sound 'live'. It's a total sham - don't buy this thing. Bertrand. -
Anyone else going? Bertrand.
-
Thanks - I hadn't had time to search, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a 'mail order only from Mighty Quinn and nowhere else' kind of deal like Mosaic has. Bertrand.
-
Oooh...their site also mentions Colpix. Could we finally see a reissue of Golden Boy? Bertrand.

The Land and the Adams have hit my radar screen like a fly on a windshield. I have not dealt with Mighty Quinn before: are they only available through mail order, or would they show up at Borders' or Tower.com, where I might be able to get 'em cheaper with coupons, sales etc.? Also, along with Water, this is the second label that is licensing Blue Note stuff that I know of (third, if you count the One-Way Moto Grosso Feio fluke). Are there any others out there? Although they cost more, I like the idea of getting my BN rarities from someone other than EMI. Plus, I bet Water and Mighty Quinn will never do the copy protection thing. Bertrand.

Reminder for anyone in or near DC tomorrow, October 1st. The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival will take place at the Sylvan Amphitheatre on the National Mall, at the foot of the Washington Monument. I checked out the site Wednesday - gorgeous location, and the weather should be nice. Highlights (for me) are The Fort Apache Band at 12:00, Wallace Roney Sextet at 1:45 and WAYNE SHORTER at 4:00. Vocalist Sunny Sumter appears at 3:00, and has an excellent band: Janelle Gill on piano and James King on bass. If you want to hook up there, send me a PM and I'll send you my cell phone number. Bertrand. Disclaimer: I got the times from several sources, including people affiliated with the Festival and this website: http://www.rightonrhythm.com/ror/sites/sch...e.php3?club=689 (at the top, it says it starts at 1:00, and at the bottom 12:30). All of the sources are consistent, but the official site dejazzfest.org does not show times. So, I can't promise the times won't change, as these things do happen with these outdoor free things. Don't hold me to them. I will be there before 12:00 to be safe.

They'll recoup $250,000 with no problem ... over time. It will sell very well in the early days, then drop off but will remain steady and healthy. Sort of like Kind Of Blue. I applied rigorous statistical analysis tecnhiques to determine this. Same techniques I used that lead me to recommend that Sony postpone the Cellar Door Box indefinitely. Bertrand.
-
Yes, if you have the vinyl keep it - Freddie Waits' musical solo was 'edited down' on the CD reissue. Why? Bertrand.
-
Especially coming from Holzman. Bertrand.

Jim, What do you know about the delay for the Miles Cellar Door box? Thanks, Bertrand.

There's a huge article in this month's Jazztimes. Postponing it really makes them look stupid. Bertrand.

I had a thought. If you guys are in town earlier that day, or the next day, I could take you to the Library of Congress to check out all of the copyright deposits I've been collecting. There's some Larry Young, Big John Patton, Lonnie Smith, Grant Green and other goodies. Bertrand.

I believe it was mentioned on other threads - I think only Billie was NOT taped. Bertrand.

I'll check around. The Washington City paper has listings and will be out Thursday. In the meantime, you can check Bluesalley.com and twinsjazz.com. These are the principal clubs for national acts. I saw that Joseph Henson will be at Twins on 10/6. He's an excellent local player from the Army bands. Perhaps we could hook up for this one. It would be cool to meet. I may go to PA on the week-end to see Wayne in either Philly or Easton, PA (or both!). Too bad you're not there this Saturday. FREE Wayne concert on the Mall (also Wallace Roney and Fort Apache band). Bertrand.

If Miles had only kept his dick to himself! Bertrand.

Of course, there have also many disputes among the various sets of half-siblings, so the onus may be on another party altogether. Everyone loses either way. Bertrand.

The attorney for the Miles estate, one Peter Shukat (sp?), seems to spend his days sitting in his office thinking up ridiculous objections to anything anyone ever comes up with regarding Miles. What his clients have to gain by restricting the presence of an item on the market by which they would profit, I cannot begin to guess. I believe Sue Mingus is another of his clients. Bertrand.

Blues Alley, also known as 'Dues Alley' Barring unforeseen circumstances, I will be there. I'll get the word out to other board members. Bertrand.

I really haven't heard his music, but I got to hang out with Bob last week-end at the Monk competition and I have to say he is one of the NICEST guys I have ever met in the music biz. A very down to earth, unpretentious guy. We had a great chat concerning Wayne's 'Pinocchio' - even though I'm no musician, I really got a lot out of it. You can check out this discussion in the musicians' forum. So far, only Rosco has picked up on it. I was hoping to hear from some of our 'musically active' friends on this one... Bertrand.
-
Rosco, Thanks for the fascinating input. I thought someone else might have some ideas. Anyone? Bertrand.

This is some great shit!! How can I download these to my PC, then move 'em to iTunes? I'm technically inept. Bertrand.

Happy birthday! Bertrand.

I didn't know Jimmy Smits was a jazz artist before LA Law and NYPD blue Bertrand.
