  1. I noticed the same thing. I think it's because on a lot of live albums, the cuts are kind of blended together, even though there's an official separation between tracks. If you burn the CD straight through, it works fine. If you burn it track by track, you get the abrupt ending. Haven't figured out how to sove it in iTunes yet. Sometimes I join tracks, but usually only on studio stuff (e.g., the suite on Side A of Ballad Of The Fallen - if you don't merge 'em, the tracks end abruptly). For live stuff, I live with it, knowing that the CD player is still the optimal playback system - the iPod is for convenience, but what convenience! Some people have asked me why I keep the CDs after they've been loaded into iTunes! What kind of reply can I give them? Bertrand.
  2. I think you mean 'Sixteen', not 'Skippy'. Bertrand.
  3. Felser, Are you sure about the Grubbs brothers living in Philly? I see Carl occasionally, and I'm pretty sure he lives in Baltimore. As for Earl, he passed away quite a while ago. I don't know the cirumstances, but I know it deeply affected Carl. Bertrand.
  4. Bono may get the Nobel Peace Prize? Who's next, Henry Kissinger? Bertrand.
  5. Did Jimmy record 'Far Away Lands' before this date, or is Hank Mobley's the first version on record? Bertrand.
  6. Is Matt dropping a subtle hint? Bertrand.
  7. Done. Thanks for the replies. I'll get Hill and Patton next week, and wait until I digested (and iPoded!) those before moving on to Mr. T. Fortunately, thanks to this board, if ever Stan the Man makes the endangered list earlier than Christmas, I will know here right away. Bertrand.
  8. I'll try to change the header! Bertrand.
  9. I'm probably going to order the Andrew Hill and John Patton selects next week. I'll get the Stanley Turrentine around Christmas, and the Carmell Jones early next year. Are any of these in danger? Should I change the order of my purchases? I also plan to get the Tolliver and Jazztet, but those are recent releases. Thanks, Bertrand.
  10. A quick search at jazzdisco.org (a far from definitive or accurate site, but good for quickie searches) shows George Benson on: Lou Donaldson: Alligator Bogaloo 4/7/67 Hank Mobley: Reach Out! 1/19/68 Larry Young: Heaven On Earth 2/9/68 Lee Morgan: Taru 2/15/68 Lou Donaldson: Midnight Creeper: 3/15/68 Lonnie Smith: Live At Club Mozambique 5/21/70 Ronnie Foster: Cheshire Cat 3/21/75 (background vocals only) Ronnie Foster: Cheshire Cat 3/24/75 (guitar and background vocals) Stanley Turrentine: Straight Ahead 12/7/84 Freddie Hubbard: Life Flight 1/23/87 Bertrand.
  11. I'm not sure what distinction you are making between standards and tunes from Golson's repertoire - all four of the pieces you list are his compositions, and all four can safely be called standards. Bertrand.
  12. Previous message deleted. Bertrand.
  13. Ray, I sent a PM with my phone numbers but I'm not sure it went out. If not, I'll try again tonight. Bertrand.
  14. David, That anecdote is in the Zawinul bio by Brian Glasser, and Chester Thompson is the unfortunate recipient of the telegram. There may be something in Mercer's book as well, but I have only read it by jumping back and forth, so I may have missed it. Despite its flaws (see elsewhere), I do intend to read through Michelle's book cover to cover, since it is the only Wayne bio out there. By the way, Wayne kicked ass at the Washington monument yesterday. Can't wait to see him in Philly next week. Bertrand.
  15. I always assumed Wayne's 'backseat' role in Weather Report was also partly due to family issues. These are documented in Michelle Mercer's book. Sometimes life and its hardships get in the way of art. Bertrand.
  16. I own the Nippon/Savoy version of this CD, which has 9 tracks. I knew there was a 'Body And Soul' out-take which was on later CD issues, but it was not worth buying a new CD for that one track. iTunes has two versions of this material, both of which have 'Body And Soul'. One is the recent Timeless CD (with the yucky cover), the other is also called Jazz Composers' Workshop. I bought the one on Timeless (3:09) to have a complete CD in my iPod (and deleted the yucky cover). BUT, the other version is listed in iTunes as 'alternate take 1, previously unreleased'. The timing is close (3:07), and from the 30 second sound clips they sound the same. So, the question is: Is the 3:07 version an alternate of the 3:09 version, or are these the same take? Thanks, Bertrand.
  17. Thank you, Brownie. So the two takes I have are actually alternates, and I dod not have tracks 1, 2 and 5 either - so this is a must buy. I'm almost done putting the complete Booker Little discography into my iPod, and 'Cliff Walk' is missing (although apparently it's the same composition as 'Looking Ahead'). Don Sickler was raving to me about how great this track was - can't wait to hear it. I apologize for accidentally putting this in the wrong forum - does anybody know how I can move this to discography? Thanks, Bertrand.
  18. I agree with everything Stefan said. I'll just add an (approximate) set list: 1. Unknown title (perhaps Zero Gravity) 2. Go 3. As Far As The Eye Can See 4. She Moved Through The Fair 5. Smilin' Through 6. Joy Ryder I am going to see him in Philly next Saturday - just can't enough of this stuff. Bertrand.
  19. Haven't had the time to do a thorough search, but maybe someone already has the answer. Newport Rebels has just been reissued. The tracks are: Mysterious Blues Cliff Walk Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams 'tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do Me And You Do these appear on any other Candid CDs/LPs? There's a 'Bizness' on Candid Dolphy, but Mike's Abbey Lincoln discography seems to suggest it's a different take. I'm pretty sure 1 and 3 are on other Mingus Candid CDs, but again, perhaps different takes. How about 2 and 5? Thanks, Bertrand.
  20. RDK, Elsewhere you asked about gigs in DC. I suggested a possible gig on 10/6. Let me know if you're interested. Bertrand.
  21. Some record label took an old record of 'Trane and an old record of Monk, and edited them together, like those Nathalie Cole/Nat King Cole and Kenny G/Louis Armstrong duet things. Then they dubbed in some applause to make it sound 'live'. It's a total sham - don't buy this thing. Bertrand.
  22. Anyone else going? Bertrand.
  23. Thanks - I hadn't had time to search, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a 'mail order only from Mighty Quinn and nowhere else' kind of deal like Mosaic has. Bertrand.
  24. Oooh...their site also mentions Colpix. Could we finally see a reissue of Golden Boy? Bertrand.
  25. The Land and the Adams have hit my radar screen like a fly on a windshield. I have not dealt with Mighty Quinn before: are they only available through mail order, or would they show up at Borders' or Tower.com, where I might be able to get 'em cheaper with coupons, sales etc.? Also, along with Water, this is the second label that is licensing Blue Note stuff that I know of (third, if you count the One-Way Moto Grosso Feio fluke). Are there any others out there? Although they cost more, I like the idea of getting my BN rarities from someone other than EMI. Plus, I bet Water and Mighty Quinn will never do the copy protection thing. Bertrand.
