  1. Once Wilburn goes to that great jam session in the sky, his most direct heir will be in place to make trouble, i.e. his third cousin's wife's dog's groomer. Bertrand.
  2. Man, I hope Wilburn doesn't show up at my door and threaten to beat me up for calling him a crummy drummer. What the hell has he done since Miles canned him 18 years ago? Bertrand.
  3. EKE BBB, I look at the Hill discography all the time, but I never noticed that there was a listing of the albums as they were issued as well. D'oh! Rooster, Actually, Mosaic did not keep the track order, which is why I was asking. I put the box in my iPod, but I wanted to make a playlist with One For One in album order. Of course, it's a mix of two sessions, and I have it in my iPod session by session. Thanks to everyone for their help, Bertrand.
  4. I would like to know the original LP order for the tracks that appeared on the Andrew Hill twofer LP One For One. The AMG has: LP # 1 Euterpe Erato Pax Eris Calliope LP # 2 One for One (actually Ocho Rios) Diddy Wah Without Malice (Cascade) Poinsettia Illusion Fragments Thnaks in advance, Bertrand.
  5. Never mind - he does come in briefly at the end of the out-chorus. Bertrand.
  6. It is with sadness that I report the passing of Ernestine Cox, nee Morgan, last week-end in Philly. Ernestine was Lee Morgan's sister and the elder of the four Morgan siblings (Lee was the youngest). It was Ernestine who, along with brother Jimmy, bought Lee his first trumpet. Lee had dabbled with the vibes for a year, before settling on trumpet as his instrument. I met Ernestine once, at Jimmy's funeral in December 1999. She had been in poor health for several years. Ernestine's funeral will be this Friday. My deepest condolences to the Morgan family, that I have known for the last 15 years or so. Bertrand.
  7. This sounds like the one on Jazz Door. Grey market it is. Bertrand.
  8. On Lee Morgan's The Rajah, I do not hear a trace of Hank Mobley on the track 'What Now, My Love'. Does anyone disagree? Thanks, Bertrand.
  9. These articles refer to the first ever release. Confusion with Another Workout is probably the correct answer. Another example of a mistake being perpetuated through slopiness. Good move keeping those Schwann catalogs! Bertrand.
  10. Mike, I didn't notice your comment about the baritone before. In fact, Jackson plays baritone on the title track to John Patton's The Way I Feel. So he is most likely the guy who played baritone with Lionel Hampton, and Lord is incorrect to list him as junior (you can keep the dollar). Are there then sessions with Paul Williams, Chuck Willis, Lloyd Price and Lionel Hampton which feature Fred Jackson? Are any of these likely to be out on CD? I'm not a huge Hamp fan, but if I knew there was a CD with solos by Fred Jackson, I might get it. Bertrand.
  11. I googled Hank Mobley (sounds vaguely obscene) and found several articles that claim that Soul Station did not come out until 1987. I find this hard to believe, considering it contains his most famous tune 'This I Dig Of You', which is in many fake books. What is the correct release date? Thanks, Bertrand.
  12. Yes, they flipped the two sides of the LP when they remastered this from vinyl The CD actually has the tracks in the following order (ignore what the tray card says): Effi - Irina - Nocturnal - Patterns - A Time To Go - Ankara - Patterns (alt.) Effi was Stanley Cowell's wife at the time. They were high school sweethearts from Cleveland. She later married the infamous D.C. mayor Marion Barry, and was his wife at the time he was arrested for doing crack (remember the tape?). She stood by his side during the trial, but split as soon as he received his sentence. However, she was helping out with his recent campaign for D.C. city councilman (his nth wife left him after more drugs and sex allegations surfaced), but only as a friend, I think (I hope). He recently pleaded guilty to not paying federal taxes since 1999 (despite many warnings). He is awaiting his sentence. He is also very ill, and I don't think he'll be around much longer. Bertrand.

Did we ever ascertain a date of death for Fred Jackson? Bertrand.
  14. And when you do find it, you will be surprised to hear 'Effi' start off the CD Does anyone remember who Effi is, or do I have to post an explanation. Bertrand.
  15. Any record label that tries to install copy protection after this disaster is really shooting itself in the foot. Shouldn't Art Blakey's Drum Suite be on this list? How many other titles will they forget to recall? Anyone who buys a Celine Dion CD deserves all this crap Bertrand.
  16. It could be either Eric - but Gravatt is a lot older! Bertrand.
  17. Before I get Stepping Stones, I want to make sure of one thing: This CD does not have copy protection due to its length, and therefore playing it on my PC and loading it onto my iPod will NOT install a spyware virus, correct? Bertrand.
  18. Of course I know it was on Blue Note. I just read my old post and scrached my head for a minute as to why I wrote 'label unknown' for this title and Candy. And then I remembered: I posted it just a few days after the old Blue Note board was shut down. I was pissed off at those motherfuckers. Bertrand.
  19. Why on earth has Weather Report's Live In Tokyo still not been released domestically? Bertrand.
  20. Nasar confirmed tonight that Frankie is still living, albeit ill. Bertrand.
  21. Just came back from a Hank Mobley tribute tonight in D.C., led by vocalist George V. Johnson (who's been working with Don Sickler on this project). George sang with a crackerjack quartet and occasionally was joined by a 6-person choir. The band was Fred Foss (ts), Harrry Appelman (p), Ephraim Wrofolk (sp?), and Nasar Abadey (d). They played about a dozen tunes (plus a couple tangentially related to Mobley), including some obscurities such as 'Looking East'. I need to brush up on my Hank - it's been a while since I listened to him. Bertrand.
  22. I'm not confusing the two. I'm 99% sure some of the tracks in the Hill Mosaic were listed as 'rejected' in the 2nd edition of the discography. Also, there were changes from edition 1 to edition 2: the alternates from Buhaina's Delight went from rejected to issued; the Wayne Shorter 10/70 session went from unissued to rejected. Bertrand.
  23. Ok, here's the link, since I apparently was the first to see this: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051111/ap_on_...copy_protection Does the CEO look like a mobster or what? Bertrand.
  24. Oh, and if and when this does come out, it will most likely NOT be copy-protected, judging from a news item I saw on yahoo which I am too lazy to post a link to. Bertrand.
  25. What are you guys bitching about? It's just taking longer than expected for Vincent Wilburn to wipe out DeJohnette's drum track and record himself over it, that's all. No big deal. Patience is a virtue. Bertrand.
