  1. I'll just go ahead and make space on my CD shelf right now. This would be Tolliver's first record in how many years? Frank, is this Blue Note, Palmetto, or Death Row records? Bertrand.
  2. I think Mike is on the right track - there was probably never any Wayne Shorter composition, and the phone call to Wayne was about Alan's tune 'Mephistopheles'. Although it does not show up at www.loc.gov, I know the piece was copyrighted. I think it was in Wayne's publishing company (Miyako Music) which might explain the whole story: they called Wayne to ask if he would be willing to switch the publishing rights from Miyako Music to ESP. Of course, he said no (why would he say yes to something like that) and so the track was left off, initially. Don't know why it showed up later. The four Wayne compositions from All Seeing Eye were copyrighted 12/3/65; why the date is so close to the Marion Brown session may be a coincidence. I don't have the copyright date for Alan's tune handy. Alan copyrighted only one other song - 'Iditus', also from a Marion Brown date. Don't know the publisher off-hand. Bertrand.
  3. Looking at the contents, there are a lot of tunes I don't know. Apart from 'Maiden Voyage', 'Eye Of The Hurricane', 'Red Clay', 'Diana' and 'Finger Painting', are there any tracks with Wayne Shorter? Thanks, Bertrand.
  4. Great! I'll buy the 'Red Clay' too. At first, I was suspicious of this whole iTunes thing, but I gotta say, it's a cheap way of getting the oddball missing track. In this case, of getting an entire album not available on CD. I'll burn a copy of the whole thing, of course, and it's all very legal. To quote Anais Nin in the movie Henry and June (after she just finished fucking a guy other than her husband), 'I feel so pure'. Thanks guys, Bertrand.
  5. Rosco, Thanks! So, if I have it right, the box contains both 'Maiden Voyage' and 'Eye Of The Hurricane' from the V.S.O.P. album (6/29/76). Was the introduction on the LP as well, or is that a new track? I vaguely remembered that when the box came out, there was some previously unissued stuff, and I thought 'Hurricane' was one of them. Guess I was wrong. So, here's what I'm getting at: If I buy these tracks from the box on iTunes, plust 'Nefertiti' which is on a best of CD also available on iTunes, I can actually put together the entire V.S.O.P. quintet portion of the 2-LP set. This has never been out on CD. Thanks again, Bertrand.
  6. For those of you with the Herbie Hancock Sony box (or at least the booklet): Which version of 'Eye Of The Hurricane' is on this? Is is the one from 6/29/76 at Newport which was originally on the 2-LP V.S.O.P. album? If not, who is on it? Same question for 'Introduction To Maiden Voyage' and 'Maiden Voyage'. Thanks, Bertrand.

    Favorite "Comper"?

Harry Appleman and Janelle Gill, two DC-area players who just knock me out. Bertrand.
  8. I'm confused: 1) Wasn't Take Aim recorded for Blue Note, albeit recorded in LA under the supervision of Leonard Feather? Here, it says World Pacific. 2) What's the 20 minute bonus track ('Straight, No Chaser)? Is it from the same studio session, or a live tune from around that time? Bertrand.
  9. We don't know if they're using an alias. Bertrand.
  10. Also, I'm curious about one thing: is the house located in what is considered a 'bad' part of town? I remember that someone once told me that it was only a few blocks from the MOVE house that the mayor 'wisely' firebombed in the 80s. Bertrand.
  11. Fascinating article, and a beautiful picture. It sounds like the house is treasure trove. And someone needs to get a grant to preserve all this stuff, especially the unrecorded music. Are there any researchers who have tried to look at this music? I wonder how much overlaps with the unrecorded copyrights that one of the staff members at the Library of Congress dug up. I wish I had time to do this myself, but in any case, I'm no Sun Ra expert. It's a full-time job in itself. Bertrand.
  12. If a person plugs an album that he/she produced (which is fine with me) in any of the forums on this board (not just recommendations), do we not all agree that in the interest of full disclosure, that person should mention that he/she produced the album in question? Just a thought. Bertrand.
  13. If bad things don't come in threes, then how do you explain the three volumes of Wynton Marsalis' Soul Gestures In Southern Blue? Or the fact that Blood On The Fields is a 3-CD set? Bertrand.

Ghost, What did Herbie say? Bertrand.
  15. So Stanley Clarke dropped out and has since spoken out? Interesting. I remember also that Lamont Johnson (not on the list) was involved for a while, but wrote a letter to Jazz Times/Down Beat saying he was out and happy to be so. He died soon after, poor guy, just after having released a record with which he hoped to make a comeback. I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that Nicole Kidman is most definitely out. Gabor Szabo? Bertrand.
  16. Isn't Dave Holland also a scientologist, albeit a much less outspoken one? I believe I read that once. Stanley Clarke as well, if I remember correctly. Bertrand.

A footnote: Drummer William Murphy often plays with these guys, but I have to admit I think his playing is below par. Somehow, the musicians don't seem to mind him, which is odd. Just last week-end, I passed on a Larry Willis gig because he was on it. Bertrand.

Claude, Unless I missed some mention in the bio which I only skimmed over, the Peabody Institute is in Baltimore. I don't believe they have a D.C. campus. Of course, the two cities are close enough (in the next 50 years, they will be suburbs of one another!), so as a result, Gary plays frequently down here, usually at Twins, often with the group Supernova. I admit I have not caught him in a while, and it sounds like I should consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to see him so often. Shame on me for passing up on this opportunity; based on your recommendation, I will make a point to go see him next time. In fact, I might make it a D.C.-chapter of the organissimo forum get-together. We haven't had one in eons. Bertrand.
  19. Happy birthday Stefan! Bertrand.
  20. Not only that, you can reorganize the box set any way you want! I've re-ordered a number of Mosaic sets back into LP order in just seconds. I agree, the iPod is a godsend, even more for music lovers with little kids and a small townhouse where the TV/DVD and stereo are in the same room. I've also got the complete Larry Young playlist all done. I left out the Fuel stuff, which I don't care for much, and I'm missing the track with Lenny White (and I could use a less scratchy copy of the Buddy Terry LP...) Bertrand.
  21. Wow. That was faster than I expected. I knew it would be on Blue Note. Makes their complete Monk box obsolete! I listened to this session a week ago at the Library of Congress. It's as great as expected, but my favorite Monk/Trane is still the three quartet tunes on Riverside. They stretch more in the second (later) set (as always at these kind of shindigs). The version of 'Sweet And Lovely' is a highlight, with a three-minute Coltrane solo in double time. If you are in D.C. and want to listen to it before it comes out, you can do so in the recorded sound reading room M-F 8:30-5:00. Contact Brian Cornell at 202-707-7833. Bertrand.
  22. I wondered too, until I saw the DVD. It looks like Tina, and it sounds like Tina. It's Tina. Bertrand.

One of the Pips passed away recently. The brief obit in the Washington Post just had the word 'pip' under his name. That caught my eye, and I had to read it to understand what they were talking about. 'What do you do for a living?' 'I'm a Pip'. Bertrand.
  24. Mosaic said a while ago that they are eliminating the running low category. Things will go straight to last chance. The reason was the rapidity with which something moved from running low to last chance. It wasn't worth it. I passed on this set as I have two of the six sessions on CD and one on vinyl. I'm sure the other three will show up on CD eventually, probably as RVGs. Gotta leave some Blue Notes for my retirement years! Bertrand.
  25. Any way to contact ECM directly to suggest titles? I'm still waiting for Dewey Redman's The Struggle Continues... Bertrand.
