I think Mike is on the right track - there was probably never any Wayne Shorter composition, and the phone call to Wayne was about Alan's tune 'Mephistopheles'. Although it does not show up at www.loc.gov, I know the piece was copyrighted. I think it was in Wayne's publishing company (Miyako Music) which might explain the whole story: they called Wayne to ask if he would be willing to switch the publishing rights from Miyako Music to ESP. Of course, he said no (why would he say yes to something like that) and so the track was left off, initially. Don't know why it showed up later. The four Wayne compositions from All Seeing Eye were copyrighted 12/3/65; why the date is so close to the Marion Brown session may be a coincidence. I don't have the copyright date for Alan's tune handy. Alan copyrighted only one other song - 'Iditus', also from a Marion Brown date. Don't know the publisher off-hand. Bertrand.

Great! I'll buy the 'Red Clay' too. At first, I was suspicious of this whole iTunes thing, but I gotta say, it's a cheap way of getting the oddball missing track. In this case, of getting an entire album not available on CD. I'll burn a copy of the whole thing, of course, and it's all very legal. Rosco, Thanks! So, if I have it right, the box contains both 'Maiden Voyage' and 'Eye Of The Hurricane' from the V.S.O.P. album (6/29/76). Was the introduction on the LP as well, or is that a new track? I vaguely remembered that when the box came out, there was some previously unissued stuff, and I thought 'Hurricane' was one of them. Guess I was wrong. So, here's what I'm getting at: If I buy these tracks from the box on iTunes, plust 'Nefertiti' which is on a best of CD also available on iTunes, I can actually put together the entire V.S.O.P. quintet portion of the 2-LP set. Fascinating article, and a beautiful picture. It sounds like the house is treasure trove. And someone needs to get a grant to preserve all this stuff, especially the unrecorded music. Are there any researchers who have tried to look at this music? I wonder how much overlaps with the unrecorded copyrights that one of the staff members at the Library of Congress dug up. Claude, Unless I missed some mention in the bio which I only skimmed over, the Peabody Institute is in Baltimore. I don't believe they have a D.C. campus. Of course, the two cities are close enough (in the next 50 years, they will be suburbs of one another!), so as a result, Gary plays frequently down here, usually at Twins, often with the group Supernova. I admit I have not caught him in a while, and it sounds like I should consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to see him so often. Shame on me for passing up on this opportunity; based on your recommendation, I will make a point to go see him next time. Not only that, you can reorganize the box set any way you want! I've re-ordered a number of Mosaic sets back into LP order in just seconds. I agree, the iPod is a godsend, even more for music lovers with little kids and a small townhouse where the TV/DVD and stereo are in the same room. I've also got the complete Larry Young playlist all done. I left out the Fuel stuff, which I don't care for much, and I'm missing the track with Lenny White (and I could use a less scratchy copy of the Buddy Terry LP...) Bertrand.

Wow. That was faster than I expected. I knew it would be on Blue Note. Makes their complete Monk box obsolete! I listened to this session a week ago at the Library of Congress. It's as great as expected, but my favorite Monk/Trane is still the three quartet tunes on Riverside. They stretch more in the second (later) set (as always at these kind of shindigs). The version of 'Sweet And Lovely' is a highlight, with a three-minute Coltrane solo in double time. One of the Pips passed away recently. The brief obit in the Washington Post just had the word 'pip' under his name. That caught my eye, and I had to read it to understand what they were talking about. 'What do you do for a living?' 'I'm a Pip'. Bertrand.

Mosaic said a while ago that they are eliminating the running low category. Things will go straight to last chance. The reason was the rapidity with which something moved from running low to last chance. It wasn't worth it. I passed on this set as I have two of the six sessions on CD and one on vinyl. I'm sure the other three will show up on CD eventually, probably as RVGs. Gotta leave some Blue Notes for my retirement years! Bertrand.
