I'm having trouble following this thread. What Hank Mobley composition is mentioned between Mike's post at 12:40 and Dan's post at 1:01? Mike mentions four tracks: Close Your Eyes Goldie Ray's Idea Lester Left Town. None of these are by Mobley. Are you thinking of 'Goldie'? This is by Lee Morgan. I have a French RCA CD with the four tracks above. Walter Davis' solos are blatantly cut off on some of the tunes. They must be complete on the tape. This is screaming for a proper expanded reissue. RCA? Forget it. If you're having trouble identifying 'Bouncing With Bud', I always think of it as 'that tune that sounds like the theme to the Dick Van Dyke Show'. Bertrand.

I predict this thread will be going in an entirely different direction in the next few days. Bertrand.

Very curious thing - he was at Dover (I saw him there play with Joe Chambers), then I was told he left. Now he seems to be back. Bertrand.

The Moon CD is the soundtrack for the Jazz 625 Film. Bertrand.

The estates of all the musicians on the date have to give their OK. There's also the original festival producer, and probably some more. Everybody wants a cut. Bertrand.

He'll be at the Iridium the last week-end of April. I may be there. Bertrand.

Glad I stocked up on OJCs when I did... One silver lining: perhaps they'll all show up at Barnes And Noble in the $3.99 bin, just like the Concords did. Also, Daedalus has a line on OOP Concords. Not that this is a good thing: I wish Fantasy had stayed as they were. But it was always just one guy, and he's old enough to retire now. I wonder how Blue Note will fare once Michael Cuscuna retires? Bertrand.

Travelling to Paris, France
bertrand replied to undergroundagent's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
An added recommendation: walk, walk, walk. My absolutely favorite thing to do when I'm in Paris is just walk all around the city. It's not spread out too much, so just a short walk can take you from one cool neighborhood to another. I've walked before from the Trocadero where my mother lives (Eiffel Tower area) to the Louvre. Of course it takes a while, but there is so much to see along the way. Great exercise, too: I was in much better shape when I lived there, even though I ate like a horse and did not do any other type of exercise. A beautiful city, no doubt. Bertrand. -
Bring the kid with you - he'll thank you later. Bertrand.

Travelling to Paris, France
bertrand replied to undergroundagent's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Weather's not great that time of the year and the days are short. On the plus side, not too many tourists and the city is bustling. During August, the city is empty, and a lot of things are closed. Honestly, April-May is the best time IMHO. Bertrand. -
I doubt the estates will put up too many hurdles in this case. Of course, I'm thinking of the Coltrane/Monk estates. Who knows about the Malik/Wilson end of the deal (they need to be consulted too). Bertrand.

Organissimo is in the studio...
bertrand replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Fabulous - I'm in. I was going to wait until I get home to sign up, but I browsed a bit to see how the process goes. If I understand correctly, I do not need a paypal account, I can just use a credit card. This will not create a paypal account for me, correct? For reasons to complicated to get into, I do not want to have a paypal account at this time. Good luck on the sessions, I can't wait to hear the new CD! Bertrand. -
Thanks Brownie - VOA makes total sense. The Library of Congress acquired the VOA collection quite a few years ago (including a bunch of Newport tapes). I'm sure Larry has known about the Monk/Trane thing for awhile, but there must be some politics involved as to why this has not come to light previously. The entire Miles set from Newport (the 'comeback concert' which led to his signing to Columbia) is also there. I listened to it a few years back. Michael Cuscuna had asked me who to contact to ask about this tape (for the Newport set that came out a few months ago), but I don't know if that is ultimately where the version of 'Round Midnight' came from. I have listened to a couple of other choice items from the Newport Collection: Maynard Ferguson Orchestra with Wayne Shorter in the band, and Blakey at Newport in 1961 with Dorham and Shorter (Lee Morgan was absent). I don't know who the 'owners' are, but now that this Monk/Trane thing is out there, my guess is that record companies will come a calling (or at least that is their hope). Rights need to be worked out, of course, but it's feasible. It's happened before. My guess: this will come out on Sony with Michael producing. I assume he is aware that this tape exists. We will need to see how the sound quality is; my guess is it's OK. Bertrand.

I just sent an e-mail to my contact at the Library (I talked to her on the phone, but she didn't know about the tape). Only 50 titles were added to the registry - this one just didn't make the cut (maybe because of sound quality?) It's a political thing. However some unissued recordings do make the cut. Yes, we need to see what Lewis Porter knows. I will keep you guys updated. Bertrand.

Joe Chambers (like other composers) seems to get his tune titles mixed up. For example, the title cut of the obscure New World LP (I have a tape - I don't even know the label) is different than the tune 'Nuevo Mundo' on Phanton Of The City. However, 'Nuevo Mundo' is the same as 'Mariposa' on Mirrors. Also, 'Rockpile' from New World is different than 'Rockpile' on Double Exposure. However, 'Rockpile' and 'Mind Rain' on Double Exposure are the same. So my question: are 'Medina' from the Bobby Hutcherson album of the same name and 'Medina' from Joe's Almoravid LP somewhat related? They sound totally different to me. They may still be the same song with a totally different arrangement - he's done this before as well (compare the title track on Mirrors to the tune of the same name on Freddie Hubbard's Breaking Point). Thanks in advance, Bertrand.

Kevin, Was jazzshrink at the McLean/Hill/Hutcherson/Hill thing in NYC in 2000? In that case, I know who he is. Bertrand.

The article gives zero info on how they came about this recording. Since it's the Library of Congress, I'll call them pronto and see what's up with that. I may even get to listen to this 'ere long. Bertrand.

Soul Stream, Here is the info on the rejected Roach session. I got it from jazzdisco.org, which is not too reliable, but on the other hand I don't think they would have made this up. I haven't had a chance to confirm in Cuscuna/Ruppli. Bertrand. Freddie Roach Trio Freddie Roach (org) Kenny Burrell (g) Ronnie Cole (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, December 4, 1962 Is You or Is You Ain't My Baby BN rejected Googa Mooga - Blues in the Front Room - Edit: Speaking of the general and well-documented jazzdisco.org sloppiness, shouldn't it be 'Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby'? And who is Ronnie Cole?
