  1. Their site now has the times. I will most likely be at the 6/9 show, and perhaps also 6/12. Bertrand.
  2. Chris sure must have a pile of newspapers in his house! Bertrand.
  3. This sounds like a great show! Sorry I'm not in Philly. Alan, if you do go, please say hello to Fred from me. This also gives an interesting clue: some of Sun Ra's arrangements are still in possession of the band. I had always assumed they were scattered to the four winds after he died. Bertrand.
  4. Herb Alpert may not be jazz, but he publishes Wayne Shorter's music (Rondor music). Of course, he only 'publishes' in the sense of collecting money and administering rights. If you think he'd actually take the initiative to put out a complete collection of scores/transcriptions, dream on. Bertrand.
  5. Very bad news. We knew this day was coming soon, but it still hurts. Glad I stocked up on Fantasy over the last few years. Of course, I didn't get every title in the catalog that I could possibly want, but I just don't have the money, space to put it all, or time to listen to it. Bertrand.
  6. For the Miles 60's quintet box, I bought the 'missing' tracks on iTunes and will eventually burn a CD. I hope to do the same for the Seven Steps Box. So far, I bought the individual CDs of Berlin and Tokyo, but those are not missing tracks (Tokyo is CD #6 from the box, and Berlin is #7). It's the cheapest way to go, although some people are against the whole downloading thing. It's not my ideal choice, but it's convenient and quick and cheap. Bertrand.
  7. That's too bad, but I know how you feel: I was tempted to try to go up to NYC tomorrow night to see the Herbie Nichols project, but I was just too tired to make any plans. I've had an unbelievably stressful month at work. I need a vacation big time. Bertrand.
  8. Yes, when I used the term 'packaging', I meant 'everything but the CDs themselves'. For completeness sake, I have a xerox copy of the Mosaic booklet. Sure wish that Herbie Nichols/Tina Brooks/Roswell Rudd gig at Yale had been taped! Bertrand.
  9. The Mosaic set is equivalent to the BN CD except for the packaging. I put the whole shebang on my iPod and reorganized it by original issue format and track order (with the alternates at the end), because the strictly chronological approach bugged me in this case. This yields 4 'LPs': Prophetic Herbie Nichols, Volume One (6 master takes, 3 alternates) Prophetic Herbie Nichols, Volume Two (6 master takes, 4 alternates) Herbie Nichols Trio (10 master takes, 4 alternates) Herbie Nichols Trio, Volume Two (this is an extended version of a Japanese-only release and contains the 15 leftover tracks - 8 master takes and 7 alternates) Bertrand.
  10. This is a free festival in Wilmington, Delaware. I saw that on June 9 (my birthday) both the Ingrid Jensen organ group and Lou Donaldson with Dr. Lonnie Smith are playing (also, there's Louis Hayes' Cannonball tribute band on 6/12). Since it's not too far from DC, I was thinking of taking a road trip with my 5-year old (who's actually met Lou). The website does not give too much info on the set-up, though (www.cliffordbrownjazzfest.com). I'm trying to see at what time the show starts and how long the sets are to see if I need to plan to sleep over or not. Also, I have mixed feelings about some festivals: a lot of clueless people show up and kind of ruin it. Has anyone been to this festival? Do you know if the music is in the afternoon or at night? How crowded does it get? Thanks, Bertrand.
  11. What is the point of these hidden tracks? Bertrand.
  12. I thought not. I knew Liston Smith had played with Kirk, which is why I assumed it was him. I remember the Doctor telling someone (while I was in earshot) that he didn't start out on piano (unlike a lot of other organists). He has of course recorded on piano since. Bertrand.
  13. This is Lonnie (Liston) Smith, not Dr. Lonnie Smith, correct? Bertrand.
  14. Bfrank, In your 1967 list, shouldn't we include After Bathing At Baxter's, or was that released in 1968? Bertrand.
  15. I'm having trouble following this thread. What Hank Mobley composition is mentioned between Mike's post at 12:40 and Dan's post at 1:01? Mike mentions four tracks: Close Your Eyes Goldie Ray's Idea Lester Left Town. None of these are by Mobley. Are you thinking of 'Goldie'? This is by Lee Morgan. I have a French RCA CD with the four tracks above. Walter Davis' solos are blatantly cut off on some of the tunes. They must be complete on the tape. This is screaming for a proper expanded reissue. RCA? Forget it. If you're having trouble identifying 'Bouncing With Bud', I always think of it as 'that tune that sounds like the theme to the Dick Van Dyke Show'. Bertrand.
  16. I predict this thread will be going in an entirely different direction in the next few days. Bertrand.
  17. Very curious thing - he was at Dover (I saw him there play with Joe Chambers), then I was told he left. Now he seems to be back. Bertrand.
  18. Who barely knew how to drive, as legend goes. Bertrand.
  19. The Moon CD is the soundtrack for the Jazz 625 Film. Bertrand.
  20. The estates of all the musicians on the date have to give their OK. There's also the original festival producer, and probably some more. Everybody wants a cut. Bertrand.

    FREDDIE IS 67!

He'll be at the Iridium the last week-end of April. I may be there. Bertrand.
  22. Glad I stocked up on OJCs when I did... One silver lining: perhaps they'll all show up at Barnes And Noble in the $3.99 bin, just like the Concords did. Also, Daedalus has a line on OOP Concords. Not that this is a good thing: I wish Fantasy had stayed as they were. But it was always just one guy, and he's old enough to retire now. I wonder how Blue Note will fare once Michael Cuscuna retires? Bertrand.
  23. An added recommendation: walk, walk, walk. My absolutely favorite thing to do when I'm in Paris is just walk all around the city. It's not spread out too much, so just a short walk can take you from one cool neighborhood to another. I've walked before from the Trocadero where my mother lives (Eiffel Tower area) to the Louvre. Of course it takes a while, but there is so much to see along the way. Great exercise, too: I was in much better shape when I lived there, even though I ate like a horse and did not do any other type of exercise. A beautiful city, no doubt. Bertrand.
  24. Bring the kid with you - he'll thank you later. Bertrand.
  25. Jim, Chuck just read it off the tape that he keeps in the basement Bertrand.
