  1. Weather's not great that time of the year and the days are short. On the plus side, not too many tourists and the city is bustling. During August, the city is empty, and a lot of things are closed. Honestly, April-May is the best time IMHO. Bertrand.
  2. I doubt the estates will put up too many hurdles in this case. Of course, I'm thinking of the Coltrane/Monk estates. Who knows about the Malik/Wilson end of the deal (they need to be consulted too). Bertrand.
  3. Fabulous - I'm in. I was going to wait until I get home to sign up, but I browsed a bit to see how the process goes. If I understand correctly, I do not need a paypal account, I can just use a credit card. This will not create a paypal account for me, correct? For reasons to complicated to get into, I do not want to have a paypal account at this time. Good luck on the sessions, I can't wait to hear the new CD! Bertrand.
  4. Thanks Brownie - VOA makes total sense. The Library of Congress acquired the VOA collection quite a few years ago (including a bunch of Newport tapes). I'm sure Larry has known about the Monk/Trane thing for awhile, but there must be some politics involved as to why this has not come to light previously. The entire Miles set from Newport (the 'comeback concert' which led to his signing to Columbia) is also there. I listened to it a few years back. Michael Cuscuna had asked me who to contact to ask about this tape (for the Newport set that came out a few months ago), but I don't know if that is ultimately where the version of 'Round Midnight' came from. I have listened to a couple of other choice items from the Newport Collection: Maynard Ferguson Orchestra with Wayne Shorter in the band, and Blakey at Newport in 1961 with Dorham and Shorter (Lee Morgan was absent). I don't know who the 'owners' are, but now that this Monk/Trane thing is out there, my guess is that record companies will come a calling (or at least that is their hope). Rights need to be worked out, of course, but it's feasible. It's happened before. My guess: this will come out on Sony with Michael producing. I assume he is aware that this tape exists. We will need to see how the sound quality is; my guess is it's OK. Bertrand.
  5. I just sent an e-mail to my contact at the Library (I talked to her on the phone, but she didn't know about the tape). Only 50 titles were added to the registry - this one just didn't make the cut (maybe because of sound quality?) It's a political thing. However some unissued recordings do make the cut. Yes, we need to see what Lewis Porter knows. I will keep you guys updated. Bertrand.
  6. Joe Chambers (like other composers) seems to get his tune titles mixed up. For example, the title cut of the obscure New World LP (I have a tape - I don't even know the label) is different than the tune 'Nuevo Mundo' on Phanton Of The City. However, 'Nuevo Mundo' is the same as 'Mariposa' on Mirrors. Also, 'Rockpile' from New World is different than 'Rockpile' on Double Exposure. However, 'Rockpile' and 'Mind Rain' on Double Exposure are the same. So my question: are 'Medina' from the Bobby Hutcherson album of the same name and 'Medina' from Joe's Almoravid LP somewhat related? They sound totally different to me. They may still be the same song with a totally different arrangement - he's done this before as well (compare the title track on Mirrors to the tune of the same name on Freddie Hubbard's Breaking Point). Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  7. Kevin, Was jazzshrink at the McLean/Hill/Hutcherson/Hill thing in NYC in 2000? In that case, I know who he is. Bertrand.
  8. The article gives zero info on how they came about this recording. Since it's the Library of Congress, I'll call them pronto and see what's up with that. I may even get to listen to this 'ere long. Bertrand.
  9. Soul Stream, Here is the info on the rejected Roach session. I got it from jazzdisco.org, which is not too reliable, but on the other hand I don't think they would have made this up. I haven't had a chance to confirm in Cuscuna/Ruppli. Bertrand. Freddie Roach Trio Freddie Roach (org) Kenny Burrell (g) Ronnie Cole (d) Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, December 4, 1962 Is You or Is You Ain't My Baby BN rejected Googa Mooga - Blues in the Front Room - Edit: Speaking of the general and well-documented jazzdisco.org sloppiness, shouldn't it be 'Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby'? And who is Ronnie Cole?

  11. OK, found it. I've met: alankin Brandon Burke brownie cannonball-addict Claude Schlouch david weiss Dmitry jazzshrink (if he's who I think he is) John L Kevin Bresnahan Leeway Michael Fitzgerald mr. jazz Stefan Wood Vince Kargatis Vincent, Paris White Lightning My apologies to anyone I missed. Bertrand.
  12. Is there a master list of board members? That might help me remember. Bertrand.
  13. Philippe Baudoin, who was behind this series, is one of the most brilliant scholars of jazz history from all periods. He's a great guy to boot. Bertrand.
  14. Bon anniversaire, Claude! Bertrand.
  15. They definitely never met in a studio - in fact, I think they never met period. Betty Mabry hosted a party for Hendrix, and Miles stayed away. It must be a remix thing. Bertrand.
  16. Just saw Sam Rivers tonight in Baltimore... Bertrand.
  17. The Terry Schiavo thing seems to have generated a flood of media death watches (e.g., constant CNN breaking news items on the Pope). It reminds me of the 'Francisco Franco is still dead' skit on Saturday Night Live. So how many death watches have we got going here? Let's see... 1. The Pope 2. Jerry Falwell 3. Kissinger is in the hospital for some heart surgery - I assume we'll hear more later today. Any others? Bertrand. P.S. A church in DC has already scheduled a mass for when the Pope dies. Reminds me of the 'I'm not quite dead yet' thing in the Holy Grail.
  18. The Jim Nabors/Lil Armstrong AMG gaffe (see Paggy Ann's April Fool's joke in the Mosaic forum) made me realize there's enough for a whole thread. Here's one: According to AMG, Wayne Shorter is the composer of the tune 'Lady D'arbanville' made popular by Cat Stevens. Bertrand.
  19. We need a thread for all of AMG's bloopers. I will start one. Bertrand.
  20. They're going to elect whatever Pope George Bush tells 'em to elect. Bertrand.
  21. In his last group, he would pretty much drown out the solosits. This was also the case during the 1992 Tribute to Miles tour. Bertrand.
  22. Vanessa Paradis is married to Johnny Depp, if I'm not mistaken. Bertrand.
  23. Marcello, Five Stars is one of the rare Wayne Shorter sessions I have never been able to get a hold of, although I did download 'Finger Painting' from iTunes (it's on the Herbie Sony box). Could you be so kind as to post the timings of the four pieces, and also confirm that 'Circe' is the same Shorter composition as 'Atlantis', as I have been told? Thanks, Bertrand.
  24. Nowhere is right. We've got a winner! Both are fabulous records, but I think Spring has the edge. Tony's playing is so subtle and refined on this record, I'm kind of sorry he went the more aggressive route (and frankly, in his last few years, he was just too loud). The 5 minute drum solo is just fantastic. It's easy to forget it's a drum solo, there's just so much going on. Bertrand.
  25. Congratulations - legendary place indeed. Is it really older than the Vanguard? Bertrand.
