  1. They definitely never met in a studio - in fact, I think they never met period. Betty Mabry hosted a party for Hendrix, and Miles stayed away. It must be a remix thing. Bertrand.
  2. Just saw Sam Rivers tonight in Baltimore... Bertrand.
  3. The Terry Schiavo thing seems to have generated a flood of media death watches (e.g., constant CNN breaking news items on the Pope). It reminds me of the 'Francisco Franco is still dead' skit on Saturday Night Live. So how many death watches have we got going here? Let's see... 1. The Pope 2. Jerry Falwell 3. Kissinger is in the hospital for some heart surgery - I assume we'll hear more later today. Any others? Bertrand. P.S. A church in DC has already scheduled a mass for when the Pope dies. Reminds me of the 'I'm not quite dead yet' thing in the Holy Grail.
  4. The Jim Nabors/Lil Armstrong AMG gaffe (see Paggy Ann's April Fool's joke in the Mosaic forum) made me realize there's enough for a whole thread. Here's one: According to AMG, Wayne Shorter is the composer of the tune 'Lady D'arbanville' made popular by Cat Stevens. Bertrand.
  5. We need a thread for all of AMG's bloopers. I will start one. Bertrand.
  6. They're going to elect whatever Pope George Bush tells 'em to elect. Bertrand.
  7. In his last group, he would pretty much drown out the solosits. This was also the case during the 1992 Tribute to Miles tour. Bertrand.
  8. Vanessa Paradis is married to Johnny Depp, if I'm not mistaken. Bertrand.
  9. Marcello, Five Stars is one of the rare Wayne Shorter sessions I have never been able to get a hold of, although I did download 'Finger Painting' from iTunes (it's on the Herbie Sony box). Could you be so kind as to post the timings of the four pieces, and also confirm that 'Circe' is the same Shorter composition as 'Atlantis', as I have been told? Thanks, Bertrand.
  10. Nowhere is right. We've got a winner! Both are fabulous records, but I think Spring has the edge. Tony's playing is so subtle and refined on this record, I'm kind of sorry he went the more aggressive route (and frankly, in his last few years, he was just too loud). The 5 minute drum solo is just fantastic. It's easy to forget it's a drum solo, there's just so much going on. Bertrand.
  11. Congratulations - legendary place indeed. Is it really older than the Vanguard? Bertrand.
  12. This is a compilation. You'll find him on some of the tracks on Seven Steps To Heaven. Bertrand.
  13. Jim, The MLK library in DC had a copy of My People (Soul People) a few years back. I borrowed it a few times but never got around to listening to it. A quick search of their on-line catalog seems to show it is gone, which doesn't surprise me in the least as most of their LPs were stolen. A few of us tried to warn them that people were trying to sell LPs in their collection to used book stores, but they didn't seem to give a fuck. Next time I'm there, I will try to see if they have it. Some of their LPs were never cataloged. Cross your fingers... Bertrand.
  14. Idiot that I am, I thought that copy protection mean you couldn't burn copies of the CDs, not that you couldn't upload them to a PC. That sucks even more. 1. Blue Note: well, Blue Note U.S. isn't doing it so I'll just forget about that (I was going to send my letter to MC so he could forward it to the people at EMI, but since EMI U.S. has nothing to do with it, forget it). I'm sorry for our European friends. 2. Other labels: what jazz labels are using copy protection in the U.S. Did we decide that Jimmy Smith Verve (The Boss, I think) was protected? What other Verve titles are protected? I have Snap Your Fingers, 'S Make It, Gloria Coleman and Billy Mitchell in this series. Are the protected? (I think I played the Coleman on my PC). Is it written on the CD case? Any other jazz labels doing this? If it's not written on the back, and it can't play on a PC, then it's defective. Thanks, Bertrand.
  15. It has come to my attention (thanks to tonym) that European copy-protected RVGs cannot be uploaded to iPods, at least not through iTunes. Apparently, this can only be done with some complicated software. Has anyone else experienced this? I have yet to buy any copy-protected CDs (that I know of), so I have not had to face this problem. I do remember a past thread where people were not able to play a Jimmy Smith Verve reissue on their computers. Since no other titles were mentioned, I thought this might be a fluke related to just this one title. So my questions are: 1. Are there other copy-protected Verves that can't be played on a PC? 2. Can these titles be uploaded to iPods? 3. Have others experienced the same problem as tonym in uploading European copy-protected RVGs to iPods? If the answer is yes to 3 , I will start an open letter to Blue Note in another thread. Once I get enough signatures, I will send this to Michael Cuscuna (and later, some Jazz mags) to complain, and ask him to forward this letter to the bigwigs at Blue Note/EMI. If the answer to 1 and 2 is yes, I'll also send it to Verve. Apple will not be too thrilled either. It's not like these titles could be re-purchased through iTunes. Most Blue Note CDs only have some tracks available. Bottom line: PCs and iPods are legal means of playback with the same status as regular CD players. Their product should play on these media with no problems. If not. their products are defective and should be returned. If anything, this will encourage stealing. For example, a dishonest person would send tonym a burn of the U.S. CD so he can upload it to his iPod. The copy protection will just encourage such illegal activity, which of course no one here on this forum condones. Bertrand.
  16. Aha - you say that 'Night Flower' and 'Alone And I' are similar/the same? I'll check. The McMaster Free Form had 'Night Flower' listed as composed by Byrd on the back cover (liner notes had Hancock). As for the iPod issue, I will start a separate thread in reissues. Bertrand.
  17. tonym, Why is it you can't put this session on your iPod? Is it because you haven't figured out how to upload CDs into your iPod in general, or is it because of copy protection? If it's the latter, I will start an open letter to Blue Note in another forum which I will send to Michael Cuscuna. If copy protection prevents CDs from being uploaded to iPods, that is totally unacceptable. If anything, it will encourage stealing. The iPod is a playback medium, just like a CD player. One should be able to upload any CD to it. Bertrand.
  18. Jim, Remember that the Shorter is the one my mother brought in. It works OK, but Orgasm is a much better record. Notice how Shorter himself actually solos very little on Tes Esat? Bertrand.
  19. Jazz artists should go the Allman Brothers route and just make a CD of each concert available for sale right after the show. Bertrand.
  20. Jim, I don't think you'll see 'em nekkid, if that's what you're thinking! Bertrand.
  21. Also, what's 'the complex jazz setting'? Bertrand.
  22. They get away with this crap by making the claim that they are the first, and hoping that no one will challenge them. With resources such as on-line or CD-ROM discographies now available (flawed as they may be), they may no longer be able to pull this off. It's not too late to set the gullible public straight for the Don Quixote thing, perhaps through a letter to the NYT? Isn't Todd Barkan the one who should do this research (or farm it out)? Bertrand.
  23. For $1,000, you would barely make a dent in the Braxton discography!!! 3 words: Mosaic, Mosaic, Mosaic. Bertrand.
  24. You must of course start with my two favorite records: Wayne Shorter - Etcetera (Blue Note) Jackie McLean - Destination Out! (Blue Note) Bertrand.
  25. You know that it's a bunch of classical music snobs because they say 'fora' instead of 'forums' like us illiterate jazz fans do! They probably also use 'orchestra' as a plural noun. Clicking on rooster's link, you see that the board and its fora have been restored. Bertrand.
