    Eric Gravatt

I was surprised to see that Eric Gravatt will be playing drums with McCoy Tyner at Blues Alley in early November. I thought he was a corrections officer in Pennsylvania. When did he come back on the scene? I may just have to shell out for this. Bertrand.
  2. My favorite is from Gilbert Shelton's stoner comic book, The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: 'Does the pope shit in the woods? Does a bear live in Rome'. Bertrand.
  3. Jazz trivia: Riddick Bowe's mother was a cousin of Lee Morgan's. Bertrand.
  4. You can also go to www.daedalusbooks.com - same store. I'm bummed - I go there about once a month and I've been keeping my eye out for a cheap copy of this (flawed, but still worth having) book. When it came out in paperback, I caved and got a copy at Borders' for 20% off. Now I see I could have gotten the hard back for cheaper. I've found some great bargains at daedalus over the years. But recently, as ejp626 said, they have been flooded with Past Perfect crap. Bertrand.
  5. I got the Jefferson Airplane reissue and I think that 'Where Flamingos Fly' was indeed the inspiration for 'Bear Melt'. I'm not convinced about 'Jambangle'/'Light My Fire'. Bertrand.
  6. I hope Blue Note will reissue Golden Boy soon. Anyone know the recording date Bertrand.
  7. Noj, ya beat me to it! Bertrand.
  8. On the track 'rejoyce' from the Airplane's After Bathing At Baxter's album, there is clearly a flute and what appears either to be a clarinet or a soprano sax taking a solo around the 2-minute mark. Does anyone know who these players might be? It's not listed on the CD booklet. I might fire off an e-mail to Jeff Tamarkin who wrote the book and all the liner notes, but I thought I'd start here. Thanks, Bertrand
  9. Conversely, the most recent batch of RVGs was sitting on the shelf, available for purchase, on August 7th at the Borders' in Gaithersburg, MD. Bertrand.
  10. Dan, Lou probably assumes he can get away with telling the same jokes over and over because most of the audience will never see him again. Little does he know that someone's out there collecting all these private broadcasts It's amazing how few musicians realize what a fan base they have out there. If Wayne Shorter were to catch a glimpse of me at every concert of his in different parts of the world that I ever attended, he'd probably think I was a stalker! Bertrand.
  11. Frank Zappa. Bertrand.
  12. I even have the Manhattan Project video; I got the last copy from Mosaic a few years back. 'Virgo Rising' is fabulous on this date. Stanley Clarke leaves me cold, however. Bertrand.
  13. Holy crap! I thought this wasa resolved years ago. Bertrand.
  14. Power of Three is a gorgeous record. This should have never gone OOP. Bertrand.
  15. I refuse to buy the wingy set after witnessing his behavior on various jazz forums, this one included. Bertrand.
  16. Not to be an apologist for Ratliff (far from it), but I've seen Cranshaw referred to as 'Crenshaw' on album/CD covers before. I think I detected the pattern that he was 'Crenshaw' on his first few Blue Note dates, then they corrected it once and for all; I'm pretty sure I've seen him referred to as 'Crenshaw' on other labels as well. I assume this is sloppiness on Blue Note's part (Grachan Moncur was 'Gracham' on Hancock's My Point Of View). Fortunately, I have never seen 'Art Blakely' on any CD; if I ever see this on a Blue Note release, I may have to vow to boycott the label. Bertrand.
  17. I thought he was at the month-long Andrew Hill seminar in Greenland. Bertrand.
  18. Wasn't he married to Mariah Carey for a minute? Bertrand.
  19. They are also slated to be in the 'Mosaic fuck-ups' box scheduled for next year. Bertrand.
  20. Dewey Redman told me once when I saw him play at One Step Down that he thought Anita Baker would make a great jazz singer. I had to admit I didn't know that much of her music, but this is the kind of thing I would take Dewey's word on. Bertrand.
  21. Now I know where Dubya got his degree. Bertrand.
  22. His brother John Jr. died in a car accident many years ago. Bertrand.
  23. I will definitely see this band as well if the opportunity arises; it's just that Dewey made Ballad Of The Fallen really special for me. As he once said himself in an interview, he was at his peak in the early 80s. I saw the LMO twice. Once was 1985 in Vitrolles, France. The concert was delayed quite a bit because apparently Haden was ill, but the show did take place. The Carla Bley Orchestra half of Ballad Of The Fallen was not there, but Pepper, Redman and McIntyre were. They really played only a few ensemble passages, but most of the night was one long solo after another. Dewey took an absolutely amazing 20-minute solo that was the highlight of the show. I saw them again at the Duke Ellington school in D.C. in the early 90s. This was a better show - the arrangements were much tighter. Dewey was not there, however. Bertrand.
  24. Definitely not Batman 5. I saw the first just for Jack Nicholson, but then I took my niece to see the one with Jim Carrey and it was awful! Bertrand.
  25. Please let us know if Dewey Redman is in the band. Thanks, Bertrand.
