Miles Davis Columbia Box Sets
Big Al replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Here's the fun I had with the Quintet and the Silent Way boxes (tracks in italics are not part of any original LP; I didn't use every single track): Disc 1: ESP (original LP order) Disc 2: Miles Smiles (original LP order) Disc 3: Sorcerer Prince Of Darkness Pee Wee Masqualero The Sorcerer Limbo Vonetta Water Babies* Capricorn* Sweet Pea* Masqualero [alt] Disc 4: Nefertiti Nefertiti Fall Hand Jive Madness Riot Pinocchio Hand Jive [alt] Madness [rehearsal] Madness [alt] Pinocchio [alt] Disc 5: Miles in the Sky Stuff Paraphernalia Black Comedy Country Son Black Comedy [alt] Country Son [alt] Disc 6: Miles in the Sky, Part 2** Teo’s Bag Thisness Circle in the Round Water on the Pond Fun Sanctuary Side Car I Side Car II Disc 7: Filles de Kilimanjaro Frelon Brun Tout de Suite Petits Machins (Little Stuff) Filles de Kilimanjaro (Girls of Kilimanjaro) Mademoiselle Mabry Tout de Suite [alt] Disc 8: Ascent** Two Faced* Dual Mr. Anthony Tillmon Williams Process* Splash Splashdown Ascent Directions I Directions II Disc 9: In a Silent Way Shhh/Peaceful In a Silent Way/It's About That Time Disc 10: Mornin' Fast Train** In a Silent Way [rehearsal] Mornin' Fast Train from Memphis to Harlem*** It's About That Time**** The Ghetto Walk Early Minor * I wanted to keep the Water Babies tracks with their respective recording sessions ** Not a real album, much less album title; just playing "what if" with the extra tracks *** This is actually IASW disc 2, track 4 (called "Shhh/Peaceful" on the box). I gave it the original intended name (based on the info in the box) and then edited the fade-in from that disc's track 7 **** This actually starts about 20 seconds into the track on the box, since I edited the fade-in onto the end of the previous track, and then started this track where the electric piano starts playing those descending chords. I have to say, I'm quite proud of my little edit on that last disc! -

No problem at all, Dan; thanks for doing this. This month has freakin' flown by; I can't believe it's already February 20th!!! Ray, let us know!

Well, it looks like I'm the proud owner of a Mobley CD!

Damn straight and a-freakin'-men!!! It wasn't even limited to his albums: did anyone see that movie "Imagine: John Lennon"? {{{shudder}}}

More props for their customer service: using one of the free codes, I ordered: Luiz Bonfa PLAYS AND SINGS BOSSA NOVA Sonny Stitt SITS IN WITH OSCAR PETERSON The BLACK ORPHEUS remaster Stan Getz in STOCKHOLM They sent Luiz Bonfa's Violão E O Samba instead of Plays and Sings. When I contacted BMG about this, they said to keep Violao and they would send Plays and Sings at no charge, which they did. No lie: I actually felt guilty enough about this to tell them to bill me for the replacement!
-
Al, the complete version would have 10 tracks - 7 from the original album and 3 more from Tonight At Noon. You are correct. I was posting last night without the CD in front of me; I have all three with me at work right now and I realize I was thinking of THE CLOWN disc, which has the four original LP tracks and two tracks that ended up on TONIGHT AT NOON. I really shouldn't post after midnight.

Oh yeah! And that's just one page! Click on the "Home" link and see all the goodies contained therein! I go there all the time. Not only is it easier to load than AMG, but also a lot more accurate (which isn't saying much, I realize). A terrific resource, IMHO!

What Christiern said.

There's more "Oh Yeah" on Tonight at Noon. Oh yeah! I should've been more specific and mentioned that I was listening to the Rhino CD of the album (thanks to a fruitful stop at the Arlington Half-Price Books where someone had unloaded all three of Mingus' Atlantic Rhino CDs), the one that has all six tracks from that session. Oh Yeah indeed!
-
Holy crap!!! I still haven't posted my answers! Sorry Nate! Been so freakin' busy I forgot to post!

Any thoughts on one I saw yesterday: THE NEW JOHNNY SMITH QUARTET The track order suggests that it's a rip from the Smith Mosaic. Any thoughts before I plunk down the cash for this?
-
The Dirty Mac (John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards (bass), Mitch Mitchell) playing "Yer Blues" on The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, and just wondering what might've been. These guys more than clicked. Also, Charles Mingus entire OH YEAH album just because it made me say "OH YEAH!!!"

First Mosaic Select Is Running Low!
Big Al replied to B. Goren.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeah, and the Hipnosis tracks were worth the price of admission alone. -
Too late, all gone. Shows you how much I pay attention around here....
-
Send it back and get the Moncur Select instead, while you can?

Reread my first post on the subject. This disc now has the alternate as track 5. On the old disc it was track 2. The thing that they did the same was tack on the ending of the alternate of "Saturday and Sunday", to the beginning of track 2. This translates as follows: The old disc had the ending of the alternate of Saturday and Sunday tacked to the front of the alternate of Saturday and Sunday. The new RVG has the same ending of the alternate of Saturday and Sunday again tacked to the beginning of track 2, which NOW is Frankenstein. I don't know if this means that all they are doing is tweaking old copies, but there is definitely some sort of disconnect happening at Blue Note. I knew what you meant, though I don't believe I communicated it properly. It still bugs me that Blue Note let this come out like that. I bet Swinging Swede is right on the mark in his assessment.
-
Wait a second.... you mean Blue Note made the IDENTICAL error as on the earlier CD, but moved it to the end of the disc? If so, then so much for this notion that RVG went back to the original tapes. It sounds like all he did was tweak the old CC disc. Wow. If this is true, what a rip.

Skip church some Sunday, stay at home, start early, and listen to the various remotes broadcast on KKDA-AM (730 AM, Soul 73). Some come close. There used to be this preacher on 89.3 that I'd listen to on the way to church, some ten years ago. I wish I could remember who that was (he sounded like B.B. King's twin brother); I think his church was in South Dallas somewhere, but I never made the time/had the guts to go check it out in person.

The Texas Rangers???? I could understand how playing for the Rangers would drive you to drink, but not take steroids.
